We're diving into the history and evolution of the Ruger Mark Series, the legendary .22 that’s been dominating the rimfire pistol market for 75 years. Starting with its humble beginnings in 1949, we break down the key differences that distinguish each of the four generations of this pistol, and discuss why its still the gold standard of .22s today.

The FBI's adoption of 10mm Auto in 1990 was supposed to be a revolutionary leap forward for law enforcement. It wasn't. Today, we're walking through the factors leading up to the FBI's infamous decision and why they quickly ditched 10mm in favor of .40 S&W. Find out what went wrong, and the parts played by Smith & Wesson and Gaston Glock. This one is a little longer than normal, and it also took longer to put together than normal. We were going for more of a documentary style, and a lot of effort went into the research, fact checking, and editing. We hope it was worth the wait!

For a span of about 40-50 years in the middle of the last century, the majority of people who carried a gun for a living were taught to fire it from hip level at 10 yards or less. Shooters before and after this generation knew that hip shooting had an enormous accuracy penalty with no benefit to speed. Today, we're looking at how one FBI gunfighter convinced the whole country that hip shooting was the next best thing. Support our channel. Buy ammo from LuckyGunner!

Let's be honest -- sorting through the barrage of new products churned out for display at SHOT Show every year can get kind of tedious. But this year, there have been several new releases that fall squarely in the middle of the Lucky Gunner content wheelhouse -- revolvers, shotguns, DA/SA pistols, and things that start with "32." For the last 100+ years, a great deal of the effort expended in ammo technology has gone toward trying to make pistol bullets act more like rifle bullets. Every few years, a new cartridge or bullet design arrives on the scene, claiming to have gotten us just a little closer to the fabled "pistol with rifle performance." Before we try to evaluate these claims, it really helps to have a basic understanding of terminal ballistics. And that starts with understanding why rifles behave like rifles, and pistols behave like pistols. More on terminal ballistics: https://youtu.be/T6kUvi72s0Y? I don't think anyone was asking for a pint-sized 30-round semi-automatic .22 Magnum carbine, but that didn't stop KelTec from bringing us the CMR30. When I first heard Beretta was planning to release an updated version of the classic 80-series Cheetah pistol, I was cautiously optimistic. I assumed they would add an accessory rail, which would undoubtedly spoil the clean lines and minimal bulk of the original design. And I was sure it would only be offered in .380 ACP, rather than the far more interesting (and fun) .32 ACP. Turns out I was not wrong on either account. But once I got over that initial knee-jerk reaction, I warmed up to some of the more promising new features of the Beretta 80X and decided I had to try one for myself. 0:00 - Intro 0:40 - Basic Specs 2:48 - New Features 3:21 - Sights and Optics 4:15 - Magazine Compatability 4:49 - Trigger 5:34 - Safety/Decocker 7:08 - Field Stripping Tip 8:27 - Holster Fit 10:02 - Blowback Design 11:40 - Reliability 12:25 - Ballistics 13:41 - Performance Review of the classic 80-series Cheetahs: https://youtu.be/IMNRhOFCFCM Blowback versus locked-breech explained: https://youtu.be/qK6sNYz2aQg High speed video analysis of blowback and locked breech designs: https://youtu.be/Gm5otPLEu9s Support our channel. All handguns recoil -- it's a perfect demonstration of Newton's Third Law. But the way we experience that recoil -- the perceived or felt recoil -- often varies dramatically from one gun to the next. Even if we compare two guns of equal weight firing the same cartridge and theoretically transferring the same amount of energy to the shooter's hand via recoil, it's possible for the *felt* recoil to be vastly different. We analyzed some more high speed footage to help explain why. More on blowback versus locked breech/recoil operated pistols: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qK6sNYz2aQg Support our channel. Within just the last few years, 1 3/4" mini shotgun shells have gone from quirky novelty status to an ammo option that firearm and shotshell makers seem to be taking seriously. Most shotguns with 18-20" barrels have a plain ol' cylinder bore with no choke. Is that a problem? There is some debate about whether defensive style shotguns loaded with buckshot can even benefit from choke tubes. We fired some test patterns to find out. Like... a whole bunch of 'em. With the release of the Smith & Wesson M&P12 earlier this year, it looks like bullpup shotguns are finally making their way into the mainstream. Is it a viable concept for home defense with legitimate benefits over conventional shotguns, or just a passing fad that will become meme-fodder in a few years? Using the Keltec KS7 as a test platform (with the hope of side-stepping the mechanical complexity issues of the multi-tube models), we try to examine some of the pros and cons inherent to shotguns with a bullup configuration. The cheek pistol is a concept devised by our friend Rhett Neumayer, (a name that should be familiar by now if you're a regular viewer) whom I've decided to start calling The Tactical Mad Scientist. It's a shooting technique that only works with very a specific type of large-format pistol like the KelTec CP33. The results are nothing short of impressive: rifle-like shooting performance in a package that weighs less than a 1911. A few weeks ago, we looked at whether red dot sights are a good idea for a concealed carry pistol. Lots of our followers expressed skepticism -- not just for red dot sights, but for any kind of sights being useful in a real world defensive encounter. Is there a specific distance where we should plan to shoot "instinctively" rather than rely on the sights? Is sighted fire even possible considering the close range and quick reaction times required in most scenarios? Should we be practicing a combination of sighted fire and point shooting? When we rely on statistics to help make important decisions, it's helpful to know if those stats are actually true. We’ve all heard that most gunfights take place at three yards. "I"m new to shooting, what pistol should I get?" The honest answer is -- I don't know! Just because you're a beginner doesn't mean you will have much else in common with other new shooters. Small guns are typically at their best when they're chambered for small calibers. So it was kind of a no-brainer for Ruger to finally make a .22LR version of their wildly popular LCP. Today, I'm looking into why this is such a great idea and whether Ruger's execution of that idea is equally great. At 4:18 I said the name of the wrong holster. The one I'm holding is a DeSantis Slim-Tuck. There is a holster called the King Tuck, but it's made by Galco. We were offered a rare glimpse into Federal's rimfire plant in Anoka, MN to watch how .22 LR ammunition is made. We all know the basic components involved -- each cartridge consists of a case with primer, propellant, and a bullet. The front sight is a Wilson Combat/Scattergun Technologies sight and the rear is a very old ghost ring from the now-defunct company MMC. It also has a Vang Comp Systems +1 mag tube extension. - The Mossberg Shockwave is a 20 gauge model with an XS Big Dot front sight and an EssTac sidesaddle attached with velcro - The shotgun I used for the range demos is actually the same 870 as before, but in a different configuration. The stock and mag tube extension are the same as before. It has a 14-inch Remington barrel with XS Express sights (yes, it is a legal, registered SBS). The stock is from Magpul. The forend is a janky old Surefire unit with a Malkoff LED head in place of the original incandescent bulb. The sidesaddle is from EssTac, attached to the receiver with Velcro. Support our channel. Why does the barrel look crooked in my pistol? Why does a puny .380 ACP Beretta Cheetah have almost as much recoil as a 9mm Glock 19? Believe it or not, the answers to both of these questions are related. It all has to do with how straight blowback pistols work compared to short recoil operated (or locked breech) pistols. Today, I'm giving my best shot at explaining the difference. I tried real hard not to use any big science words, too. Mostly because I don't what they actually mean. The Smith & Wesson M&P 380 Shield EZ is not a pocket pistol and it’s not trying to be one. It’s more in line with the size of the current crop of compact single stack 9mm pistols and even a bit larger than most of those. However, I’m including this review with our Pocket Pistol Series because .380 ACP is generally thought of as a pocket pistol caliber. But that doesn’t have to be the case. While skeptics will likely see this gun and immediately consider the 380 Shield to be “too big for a .380,” for a great number of shooters, it’s just right. And that very well may include a wider variety of shooters than the ones this gun is primarily being marketed to. This is Pocket Pistols Part 17! If you're looking for an objective and unbiased evaluation of the new Beretta 92 Elite LTT, this isn't it. There seems to be a common assumption that a good product review is one that approaches its subject from a completely neutral and objective point of view. Except that's not really possible. I think the best reviews usually come from someone who has a lot of experience with other products in the category they're reviewing. And along with that experience, one tends to also develop some biases, whether conscious or sub-conscious. The best we can do is try to recognize those biases whenever possible and try to give every product a fair shake anyway. When it comes to the Beretta 92 Elite LTT -- the latest collaboration between Beretta and Ernest Langdon -- I have to admit that my biases here are stronger than normal, and regular viewers here will understand why. If you've been following our Pocket Pistols series, you might have noticed a recurring theme: these so-called "mouse gun" calibers are not nearly as useless as the prevailing wisdom suggests. .32 ACP is no exception. The Derringer-style guns being made today are mostly patterned after the old single action Remington Model 95 that was in production from the 1860s until the mid-1930s. Because they are single action, and not particularly small next to a modern polymer pocket semi-auto, these guns are typically skipped over by most serious self-defense oriented shooters and instructors. But there was a time just a few decades ago when a Derringer -- the High Standard Model D-101 .22 (and the DM101 in .22 Magnum) -- caught the attention of some of the industry's most influential handgunners. So you want to be able to draw a pistol faster and more efficiently, but how do you actually go about doing that? You could, like most people, simply attempt the full draw stroke repeatedly at full speed. But that's not usually the quickest way to improve, and you'll probably pick up a lot of bad habits in the process. One very effective method for refining the draw is to break it down into pieces and build speed gradually (both in live fire and dry practice). The exercise in this video offers one way to work through that process at the range. Here's a more thorough breakdown of the four-step concealed carry drawstroke: https://youtu.be/8rsR2E-kUFA The par times I suggest in the video are assuming you're using a subcompact or pocket pistol or small-frame snub nose revolver. If you're using a full size or compact pistol instead, you might not find these times to be all that challenging. It's easier to establish a solid grip on a larger gun and the longer sight radius often aides in acquiring an acceptable sight picture more quickly. For those guns, I would still suggest using a 1 second par time for the first string of fire, but try 1.25 for the second string, and 1.5 for the full drawstroke. Alternately, you can use the original par times, but back the target up to 7 yards. Support our channel, buy ammo from Lucky Gunner!

Over the last few years, there have been some huge strides in the low power variable optics (LPVO) market, both in terms of quality and availability. Some instructors and other industry leaders have even suggested that cost is the only thing preventing LPVOs from completely replacing non-magnified red dot sights as the go-to option for defensive/fighting carbines. Budget-level and mid-tier LPVOs are getting better and cheaper, but are still usually lacking in visual clarity at 1x when compared to a top-shelf red dot like an Aimpoint. But how about a premium LPVO like the Nightforce NX8 1-8x24mm scope? Does it compete with an Aimpoint at close range? And at what distance does the lack of magnification in the Aimpoint give the LPVO a clear advantage? That's what John Johnston and I set out to discover in this episode of "Stuff John and Chris Wanna Know." North American Arms has been selling their diminutive .22 caliber Mini-Revolvers for nearly 30 years. They've actually been in production even longer than that. The design originally came from Freedom Arms but NAA bought the rights to produce it back in 1990. Is a .22 LR pistol a good choice for concealed carry? Most of the time, probably not. But in some cases, a .22 you can shoot well and can afford to feed sure beats the alternatives. In Part 7 of our Pocket Pistol Series, I'm making a few specific recommendations for small .22 LR pistols and revolvers for self-defense (and a few you might want to avoid). The focus is on the best among the smallest and lightest .22s available, but I've also covered some models from the compact category. Spoiler Alert: They're both really good. As I was planning future installments of our Pocket Pistol Series, I realized that several of the upcoming caliber-specific discussions would need to include references to the Smith & Wesson J-frames and the Ruger LCR snub nose revolvers. Rather than forcing our viewers/readers to suffer through multiple repetitions of a basic "J-Frame vs LCR" comparison, I decided to dedicate this installment of our series to that topic so that I could simply refer back to it as needed. It turns out there was a lot more information to cover here than I initially thought, and there is still plenty more that could be said. If you're in the market for a snub nose (whether it's your first or your 20th), I think you'll find something useful here. Shotguns are typically considered close-range firearms, especially when loaded with buckshot. Beyond about 30 to 50 yards, the spread from most shotguns becomes too unpredictable to reliably guarantee that any of the pellets will hit the intended target. But what if circumstances dictated that you had to take that shot anyway? How effective is buckshot at extended ranges? We got out the ballistic gelatin and did some testing at 25, 50, and 100 yards to find out. Is it possible that pocket pistols and other small caliber handguns are more capable problem solvers than we might have been lead to believe? That was the subject of a conversation I recently had with one of the greatest minds in the firearms training industry -- Claude Werner, aka The Tactical Professor. In this interview, he talks about why so-called "mouse guns" have often been the object of derision in the self-defense training world and then I share a few thoughts about his thoughts. A lot of people have asked why I prefer my revolvers to be double action only. I think the better question is why anyone would prefer their modern defensive revolver to have an impractical single action capability -- it's is a holdover from police bullseye shooting in the 1900s and has no relevance in a modern self-defense context. But that's just, like, my opinion, man. Special thanks to Darryl Bolke and Tom Givens for helping out with some of the background research.
