Why 10mm Auto Was a Total Disaster for the FBI

The FBI's adoption of 10mm Auto in 1990 was supposed to be a revolutionary leap forward for law enforcement. It wasn't. Today, we're walking through the factors leading up to the FBI's infamous decision and why they quickly ditched 10mm in favor of .40 S&W. Find out what went wrong, and the parts played by Smith & Wesson and Gaston Glock. This one is a little longer than normal, and it also took longer to put together than normal. We were going for more of a documentary style, and a lot of effort went into the research, fact checking, and editing. We hope it was worth the wait!

More than 70 years after Smith & Wesson introduced their first lightweight hammerless snub nose revolver, they've finally released a version with modern sights, excellent grips, and a decent trigger. They're offering it in .38 Special and (the criminally underrated) .32 H&R Magnum and it's called the Ultimate Carry J-Frame. Let's find out if it's any good. Why Was Hip Shooting Ever a Thing?

For a span of about 40-50 years in the middle of the last century, the majority of people who carried a gun for a living were taught to fire it from hip level at 10 yards or less. Shooters before and after this generation knew that hip shooting had an enormous accuracy penalty with no benefit to speed. Today, we're looking at how one FBI gunfighter convinced the whole country that hip shooting was the next best thing. Support our channel. Buy ammo from LuckyGunner!

Some New Guns We Might Review Later

Let's be honest -- sorting through the barrage of new products churned out for display at SHOT Show every year can get kind of tedious. But this year, there have been several new releases that fall squarely in the middle of the Lucky Gunner content wheelhouse -- revolvers, shotguns, DA/SA pistols, and things that start with "32." Rifles vs. Pistols: The Basics of Terminal Ballistics

For the last 100+ years, a great deal of the effort expended in ammo technology has gone toward trying to make pistol bullets act more like rifle bullets. Every few years, a new cartridge or bullet design arrives on the scene, claiming to have gotten us just a little closer to the fabled "pistol with rifle performance." Before we try to evaluate these claims, it really helps to have a basic understanding of terminal ballistics. And that starts with understanding why rifles behave like rifles, and pistols behave like pistols. More on terminal ballistics: https://youtu.be/T6kUvi72s0Y? Beretta 80X Cheetah: The Compact Comeback

When I first heard Beretta was planning to release an updated version of the classic 80-series Cheetah pistol, I was cautiously optimistic. I assumed they would add an accessory rail, which would undoubtedly spoil the clean lines and minimal bulk of the original design. And I was sure it would only be offered in .380 ACP, rather than the far more interesting (and fun) .32 ACP. Turns out I was not wrong on either account. But once I got over that initial knee-jerk reaction, I warmed up to some of the more promising new features of the Beretta 80X and decided I had to try one for myself. 0:00 - Intro 0:40 - Basic Specs 2:48 - New Features 3:21 - Sights and Optics 4:15 - Magazine Compatability 4:49 - Trigger 5:34 - Safety/Decocker 7:08 - Field Stripping Tip 8:27 - Holster Fit 10:02 - Blowback Design 11:40 - Reliability 12:25 - Ballistics 13:41 - Performance Review of the classic 80-series Cheetahs: https://youtu.be/IMNRhOFCFCM Blowback versus locked-breech explained: https://youtu.be/qK6sNYz2aQg High speed video analysis of blowback and locked breech designs: https://youtu.be/Gm5otPLEu9s Support our channel. Recoil: Let's Talk About Feelings

Gm5otPLEu9s | 20 Jun 2023

Recoil: Let's Talk About Feelings

All handguns recoil -- it's a perfect demonstration of Newton's Third Law. But the way we experience that recoil -- the perceived or felt recoil -- often varies dramatically from one gun to the next. Even if we compare two guns of equal weight firing the same cartridge and theoretically transferring the same amount of energy to the shooter's hand via recoil, it's possible for the *felt* recoil to be vastly different. We analyzed some more high speed footage to help explain why. More on blowback versus locked breech/recoil operated pistols: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qK6sNYz2aQg Support our channel. High Standard Sentinel .22 LR - A Retro Budget Snubby

You ever get that feeling -- while you're buying bed sheets, horse feed, and patio furniture -- that what's really missing from your life is a tackle box revolver? I know, me too! Sears Roebuck also believed their customers felt that way, so they asked High Standard to design just such a revolver. And in 1955, we got the High Standard Sentinel -- a 9-shot .22LR wheel gun. What if the most pressing need you have for a rifle is so you can defend your chickens and squash from small woodland creatures? If that's the case, then a suppressed .22 bolt action might be the most practical rifle you can own. The original Practical Rifle Videos: Rethinking the Scout Rifle... A few weeks ago, we looked at whether red dot sights are a good idea for a concealed carry pistol. Lots of our followers expressed skepticism -- not just for red dot sights, but for any kind of sights being useful in a real world defensive encounter. Is there a specific distance where we should plan to shoot "instinctively" rather than rely on the sights? Is sighted fire even possible considering the close range and quick reaction times required in most scenarios? Should we be practicing a combination of sighted fire and point shooting? When we rely on statistics to help make important decisions, it's helpful to know if those stats are actually true. We’ve all heard that most gunfights take place at three yards. Today, we're looking at .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum when fired from lever action rifles (in this case, two identical rifles -- a pair of Henry X Models). What's the useful range of these cartridges with rifle length barrels? We tested that. What kind of performance benefit do they offer versus handguns chambered for the same calibers? We tested that, too. And some ballistic gel testing, hard barrier penetration testing, and a whole bunch of pretty charts, numbers, and spreadsheets... if you're into that kind of thing. Today we're revisiting our most popular video ever -- a tutorial on how to keep your home defense shotgun ready for use. We suggest the "cruiser ready" condition, and the original video explained what that means and a few of the whys. But in the years since that original post, you guys have responded with a ton of questions (and critiques, criticisms, and comments), so we're going back to address some of those. It's the launch of our new video series all about lever actions! Why lever actions? Because everybody loves lever actions and today we're going to talk about why. We're looking at each chapter in the history of the lever action and why people have continued to choose these 19th century relics over the other available options. The Best Handguns for New Shooters [2020 Update]

"I"m new to shooting, what pistol should I get?" The honest answer is -- I don't know! Just because you're a beginner doesn't mean you will have much else in common with other new shooters. There are a lot of guns that could potentially work depending on your specific situation. But there are some handguns that tend to be a good starting off point for *most* people, so we're starting with those. In this updated version of our handgun recommendations for new shooters, I've gone into more depth about the "why" behind each selection, so you can decide whether it might be a good choice for you. Is the Glock 48 the New "Do Everything" Glock?

After a (mostly) glowing review of the Sig P365 XL, I'm taking a look at its closest competitor: the Glock 48. The G48 (along with the G43X) is threatening to take the place of the G19 as the Goldilocks go-to mid-sized 9mm Glock. The availability of 15-round aftermarket magazines from Shield Arms has made it an even more viable option for many Glock fans. But does the G48 really deserve to take over the title of the "do everything" Glock? As usual, the answer is complicated. Is The Ruger LCP .22LR The Ultimate Underwear Gun?

Small guns are typically at their best when they're chambered for small calibers. So it was kind of a no-brainer for Ruger to finally make a .22LR version of their wildly popular LCP. Today, I'm looking into why this is such a great idea and whether Ruger's execution of that idea is equally great. At 4:18 I said the name of the wrong holster. The front sight is a Wilson Combat/Scattergun Technologies sight and the rear is a very old ghost ring from the now-defunct company MMC. Blowback Versus Recoil Operated Pistols

Blowback Versus Recoil Operated Pistols

Why does the barrel look crooked in my pistol? Why does a puny .380 ACP Beretta Cheetah have almost as much recoil as a 9mm Glock 19? Believe it or not, the answers to both of these questions are related. It all has to do with how straight blowback pistols work compared to short recoil operated (or locked breech) pistols. Today, I'm giving my best shot at explaining the difference. I tried real hard not to use any big science words, too. Mostly because I don't what they actually mean. Smith & Wesson M&P 380 Shield EZ Review

Smith & Wesson M&P 380 Shield EZ Review

The Smith & Wesson M&P 380 Shield EZ is not a pocket pistol and it’s not trying to be one. It’s more in line with the size of the current crop of compact single stack 9mm pistols and even a bit larger than most of those. However, I’m including this review with our Pocket Pistol Series because .380 ACP is generally thought of as a pocket pistol caliber. But that doesn’t have to be the case. While skeptics will likely see this gun and immediately consider the 380 Shield to be “too big for a .380,” for a great number of shooters, it’s just right. And that very well may include a wider variety of shooters than the ones this gun is primarily being marketed to. This is Pocket Pistols Part 17! A Completely Biased and Unfair Review of the Beretta 92 Elite LTT

If you're looking for an objective and unbiased evaluation of the new Beretta 92 Elite LTT, this isn't it. There seems to be a common assumption that a good product review is one that approaches its subject from a completely neutral and objective point of view. Except that's not really possible. I think the best reviews usually come from someone who has a lot of experience with other products in the category they're reviewing. And along with that experience, one tends to also develop some biases, whether conscious or sub-conscious. The best we can do is try to recognize those biases whenever possible and try to give every product a fair shake anyway. When it comes to the Beretta 92 Elite LTT -- the latest collaboration between Beretta and Ernest Langdon -- I have to admit that my biases here are stronger than normal, and regular viewers here will understand why. If you're not a regular... well, watch the video and it will make sense. Buy a Beretta 92 Elite LTT! https://www.langdontactical.com/ Buy a Dark Star Gear holster! https://darkstargear.com/ Disclosure: Langdon Tactical sent us this gun to evaluate. They also paid for Chris to travel to Arizona to hang out with Ernest at the range for a day. Dark Star Gear sent us the holster to try out at our request after Chris saw one and thought it was good. A positive review was not promised to either company and they did not pay us for this review. Support our channel, buy ammo from Lucky Gunner!

.32 ACP is Pretty Good Too

.32 ACP is Pretty Good Too

If you've been following our Pocket Pistols series, you might have noticed a recurring theme: these so-called "mouse gun" calibers are not nearly as useless as the prevailing wisdom suggests. .32 ACP is no exception. While it's fallen out of favor in recent years, even in a pocket pistol role, .32 ACP offers a clear benefit in reduced recoil (allowing quicker and more accurate shooting) over the more popular .380 ACP while the reduction in ballistic effectiveness is minimal. In this overview of .32 ACP as a self-defense caliber, we're taking a quick look at its history, range performance, ballistic gel testing, and modern pocket pistols chambered for this caliber. Shooting a Carry Permit Test Blindfolded

Shooting a Carry Permit Test Blindfolded

If you've ever had to take a state-mandated shooting qualification test to get a handgun carry permit, you may have found it to be... not particularly challenging. But was it easy enough to pass while blindfolded? John and I tried it out using the test issued by the state of Texas, which is considered among the most difficult state-level tests (not that that's saying much). Then we talk about the problems with easy-to-pass permit tests and why they probably shouldn't exist at all. Support our channel, buy ammo from Lucky Gunner!

Why Ballistics Gel Works and Caliber Arguments are Dumb

Today, we're talking to a couple of actual ammo experts (not just a pretend internet expert like myself). I recently spent some time with Johann Boden and Chris Laack from Federal Ammunition and they addressed some of the most common questions you guys have asked me about handgun ballistics. Find out how we know ballistic gel gives us a good idea of what to expect from handgun ammo, why muzzle energy and velocity don't, and why the "caliber wars" are a waste of time. How to Master the Double Action Trigger

How to Master the Double Action Trigger

If you want to get better at running a double action trigger, Ernest Langdon is on the short list of the best instructors uniquely qualified to show you how. I (Chris) recently got to spend some time with Ernest at his local range in Arizona to film a few things, including this interview all about double action trigger technique. A lot of shooters are intimidated by revolvers and pistols with double action triggers. These guns do require a little extra effort to learn, but can be quickly mastered once the shooter understands the ways that manipulating a double action trigger differs from single-action or striker-fired pistols. Please excuse the wind noise and shaky camera... it was super windy at the range! That Time the Derringer Made a Comeback

That Time the Derringer Made a Comeback

The Derringer-style guns being made today are mostly patterned after the old single action Remington Model 95 that was in production from the 1860s until the mid-1930s. Because they are single action, and not particularly small next to a modern polymer pocket semi-auto, these guns are typically skipped over by most serious self-defense oriented shooters and instructors. But there was a time just a few decades ago when a Derringer -- the High Standard Model D-101 .22 (and the DM101 in .22 Magnum) -- caught the attention of some of the industry's most influential handgunners. How to Practice Your Drawstroke

ZEDD43XGyoU | 07 Feb 2019

How to Practice Your Drawstroke

So you want to be able to draw a pistol faster and more efficiently, but how do you actually go about doing that? You could, like most people, simply attempt the full draw stroke repeatedly at full speed. But that's not usually the quickest way to improve, and you'll probably pick up a lot of bad habits in the process. One very effective method for refining the draw is to break it down into pieces and build speed gradually (both in live fire and dry practice). The exercise in this video offers one way to work through that process at the range. Here's a more thorough breakdown of the four-step concealed carry drawstroke: https://youtu.be/8rsR2E-kUFA The par times I suggest in the video are assuming you're using a subcompact or pocket pistol or small-frame snub nose revolver. If you're using a full size or compact pistol instead, you might not find these times to be all that challenging. It's easier to establish a solid grip on a larger gun and the longer sight radius often aides in acquiring an acceptable sight picture more quickly. For those guns, I would still suggest using a 1 second par time for the first string of fire, but try 1.25 for the second string, and 1.5 for the full drawstroke. Alternately, you can use the original par times, but back the target up to 7 yards. Support our channel, buy ammo from Lucky Gunner!

Red Dot Sights versus Scopes [LPVO]

wAl1gDGrl1M | 01 Feb 2019

Red Dot Sights versus Scopes [LPVO]

Over the last few years, there have been some huge strides in the low power variable optics (LPVO) market, both in terms of quality and availability. Some instructors and other industry leaders have even suggested that cost is the only thing preventing LPVOs from completely replacing non-magnified red dot sights as the go-to option for defensive/fighting carbines. Budget-level and mid-tier LPVOs are getting better and cheaper, but are still usually lacking in visual clarity at 1x when compared to a top-shelf red dot like an Aimpoint. But how about a premium LPVO like the Nightforce NX8 1-8x24mm scope? Does it compete with an Aimpoint at close range? And at what distance does the lack of magnification in the Aimpoint give the LPVO a clear advantage? That's what John Johnston and I set out to discover in this episode of "Stuff John and Chris Wanna Know." We didn't actually get the definitive answer we were hoping for, but I think we came away with some useful impressions. The NAA Mini-Revolver: You Can Do Better

The NAA Mini-Revolver: You Can Do Better

North American Arms has been selling their diminutive .22 caliber Mini-Revolvers for nearly 30 years. They've actually been in production even longer than that. The design originally came from Freedom Arms but NAA bought the rights to produce it back in 1990. If you want a gun that fires a common caliber and fits on a key chain, no one has come up with a better option than the NAA Mini-Revolver. But is it a good tool for personal protection? Is it enough to just "have a gun," or does the performance and usability of that gun matter for real world self-defense? That's what we're trying to answer today. .22 Magnum is Pretty Good

.22 Magnum is Pretty Good

Is .22 Magnum a good caliber for personal protection? Maybe. .22 Mag has been around for nearly 60 years, but for most of that time, it's been a cartridge primarily used for hunting small game and plinking. But in recent years, there has been a rising interest in using lightweight .22 Mag revolvers for concealed carry. In Part 8 of our Pocket Pistol Series, I'm considering the pros and cons of relying on a .22 Mag when your life may depend on it. The Best .22 LR Handguns for Concealed Carry

The Best .22 LR Handguns for Concealed Carry

Is a .22 LR pistol a good choice for concealed carry? Most of the time, probably not. But in some cases, a .22 you can shoot well and can afford to feed sure beats the alternatives. In Part 7 of our Pocket Pistol Series, I'm making a few specific recommendations for small .22 LR pistols and revolvers for self-defense (and a few you might want to avoid). The focus is on the best among the smallest and lightest .22s available, but I've also covered some models from the compact category. Smith & Wesson J-frame Vs Ruger LCR

Smith & Wesson J-frame Vs Ruger LCR

Spoiler Alert: They're both really good. As I was planning future installments of our Pocket Pistol Series, I realized that several of the upcoming caliber-specific discussions would need to include references to the Smith & Wesson J-frames and the Ruger LCR snub nose revolvers. Rather than forcing our viewers/readers to suffer through multiple repetitions of a basic "J-Frame vs LCR" comparison, I decided to dedicate this installment of our series to that topic so that I could simply refer back to it as needed. It turns out there was a lot more information to cover here than I initially thought, and there is still plenty more that could be said. If you're in the market for a snub nose (whether it's your first or your 20th), I think you'll find something useful here. What's the Maximum Effective Range of 12 Gauge Buckshot?

Shotguns are typically considered close-range firearms, especially when loaded with buckshot. Beyond about 30 to 50 yards, the spread from most shotguns becomes too unpredictable to reliably guarantee that any of the pellets will hit the intended target. Don't Get Cocky: Why All Defensive Revolvers Should Be Double Action Only

A lot of people have asked why I prefer my revolvers to be double action only. 5 Years with the Smith & Wesson M&P9c

I've gotten a few questions about my M&P9c -- Smith & Wesson's compact 9mm version of the M&P and my daily carry pistol. Since I bought the M&P9c five years ago, I've run over 10,000 rounds through it. That might not be a lot compared to a long-term "torture test", but it's certainly more trigger time than I get with the average review pistol. I get to play with a lot of different guns, but I keep coming back to the M&P9c as my primary carry pistol. In this video, I explain why, and also talk about a couple of things I'd change about the M&P9c if I could.
