#stevenspielberg #indianajones #videoessay When Steven Spielberg and George Lucas set out to make Raiders of the Lost Ark they wanted to make a fun, action-adventure, B-movie like the ones they grew up with. But they got a lot more than they bargained for. Through a range of really simple filmmaking technique executed frequently and excellently, Raiders of the Lost Ark became an instant classic, birthing the Indiana Jones franchise, and remaining in the public imagination for over 40 years.

#planetoftheapes #andyserkis #visualeffects We've got to the point where fully CGI characters can be near flawless, we easily forget that Caesar from Planet of the Apes, Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean or Gollum from Lord of the Rings are just visual effects creations, and accept the illusion without second thought. How did we get here? What makes good CGI characters good and bad CGI characters bad? #tarantino #onceuponatimeinhollywood #cinema There's certain directors that have such a distinct style that there films have almost become a genre in and of itself, Wes Anderson, Yorgos Lanthimos, and - the subject of this video - Tarantino. Over the past few decades Tarantino has developed a number of trademarks - conversational dialogue, graphic violence, needle drops. But in his latest film - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - he subverts these trademarks. #kubrick #cinema #videoessay Kubrick has a reputation for being a perfectionist. Every tiny detail in his films is planned and executed to the highest possible standard with a severe amount of thought going into it. But this isn't what this video is about. This video is about the deep sense of irony that runs throughout Kubrick's career. Using Dr Strangelove as I jumping off point, I examine each Kubrick film and identify how they satires the structures of power. From the ridiculing of the military in Dr Strangelove and Full Metal Jacket, and his deconstruction of the ruling class in Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut, as well as the scepticism of technology in 2001: A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange, Kubrick views the world through an ironic lens, and if you want to understand this more, watch the video :) Written & Edited by Lawrence Mason for Archer Green.

#tarantino #cinema #90s The 90s saw the rise of some of Hollywood's most renowned directors, Tarantino, Wes Anderson, the Coen Brother, Paul Thomas Anderson and many more. These filmmakers spearheaded a new indie wave that dominated the decade, films became more stylised, dialogue moved towards a more conversational style and the subject matters became more varied. Screens were no longer dominated by action packed, high concept blockbusters like Back to the Future or The Terminator, instead films became slower paced and more relaxed. The balance of power shifted away from the studios and towards the filmmakers, facilitating this indie dominance.

The Graduate has long been labeled as one of the key films that helped kick start the 'New Hollywood' movement, and this video examines the film, and explores why. America in the late 60s and 70s was going through immense cultural change, with the counter culture at large there was a shift in social attitudes. This shift naturally found its way into popular culture, cinema included, leading to a different style of films coming out of Hollywood - The Graduate is one of these.

Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line focusses on a handful of American soldiers as they siege a Japanese held pacific island during WW2. While it doesn't shy away from showing the devastating physical effects of war, the main focus of this is on the mental effect it has on those involved. The experiences these characters go through increasingly bring their faith into question, not necessarily their religious faith, but what they base their world view around. War is destructive in nature, so natural these world views come under strain, some are broken, some are twisted, some are even built back stronger than ever, but what this film shows above all else - is how war tests people's faith. The cinematography for Barry Jenkin's best picture winner Moonlight has been broadly praised. It features more slick and 'beautiful' visuals that are not par for the course of films of this subject matter. While the camera work is impressive throughout, this video focusses on one scene in particular, the one where Mahershala Ali's Juan teaches a young Chiron how to swim at an overcast Miami beach. I wanted to delve deep into how the cinematography is used to convey specific meanings and emotions, so this video looks at the framing and camera angle of the scene, while also taking into account the wider context of it, to look at how it conveys Chiron's vulnerability, and the relationship between the two characters.

Ari Aster's Midsommar has been routinely compared to the 1973 film The Wicker Man, and at first glance it is clear why. Both are seemingly horror films with essentially the same premise, an outsider arrives at a foreign cult like community and it eventually devolves into bloody murder and so forth. After watching Robin Hardy's film I decided to make a video comparing the two, looking at what makes them so similar, but also analysing the major differences the two films have. 0:00 Introduction 0:39 Wes Anderson's The Wicker Man 1:35 How do the plots compare? 3:44 How do the characters compare? 5:34 What are the cults like? 7:48 What are the vibes 9:44 In summary

The Last Black Man in San Francisco, released in 2019, is the passion project of childhood friends Joe Talbot and Jimmie Fails, who grew up together in San Francisco. This film is about a fictionalised version of Jimmie Fails reclaiming his childhood home that his grandfather built in the 1940s. This is done amidst a changing San Francisco, where gentrification has pushed those less fortunate to the fringes of society. This video is an exploration of what I believe to be the films main theme - identity.
