This is a Propaganda Video produced by the North Korean government, advertising their destination for leisure and fun in Pyongyang. Here's a direct quote from the video: "It is the firm will of the Worker's Party of Korea to ensure that the finest Korean people who have supported the Party faithfully in all kinds of trials enjoy Socialist prosperity to their heart's content without tightening the belts again."

On select days out of the year, the Gyeongbok Palace (Gyeongbokgung) in Seoul, South Korea opens its doors for night-time tours. Tickets are limited, but I was lucky to snag a ticket in March 2016, to experience the nocturnal event. The ticket itself was cheap (just 3,000 Korean Won, or $2.50 USD), and the experience was really outstanding. I'd highly recommend it if you ever get a chance to go, especially if you can bring a loved one with you. The experience is really quite romantic.

I was exploring some small streets in Yangon, Myanmar on the evening of December 27, 2015, when I came upon an entire street that had been taken over with sitting rugs, a stage, outdoor speakers, and rows and rows of big projection screens. A Buddhist guru sat at the front, in front of hundreds, leading a mass meditation session. Locals would periodically approach the stage, offering contributions, and then receive a blessing from the monk.

On September 9, 2015, everyone in North Korea stopped working, and celebrated National Day by joining in on Mass Dances held all over the country. We went to go see one of these Mass Dances in Pyongyang, where thousands of locals had gathered for the big dance. The women were dressed up in colorful hanboks, and the men all wore the same white shirt and red tie uniform. The dancing was perfectly choreographed, almost robotically so. But what was really unsettling was how most of the locals didn't smile or laugh during the entire event. It was as if the event was mandatory, and they had no choice but to participate. I, on the other hand, was super excited to participate, and joined in on the fun. That's me in the green t-shirt. Thank you Adam Young for filming this!

During our visit to North Korea, we visited the Hana Electronics Factory, where their entire first floor was a giant computer lab, with about 100 computer terminals set up. Besides us, the room was completely empty. They turned on one single computer for us when we arrived, and demo'ed some music software. Their music video selection? North Korea's most famous propaganda music band: Moranbong!

During our visit to North Korea, we were almost never allowed to walk outside. We would ride a shuttle from destination to destination. However, one day, after we had built up enough trust with our minders, we were allowed a rare opportunity to actually walk along the streets of Pyongyang for a few minutes. Here's a video of that moment. The freedom felt amazing!

It's been a life dream of mine to swim with whale sharks. They're the largest fish in the world (growing to over well over 9 meters long), and are such beautiful, graceful creatures. Unfortunately, they're also notoriously hard to find. This winter, I arranged a whale shark expedition in the South Ari Atoll of the Maldives, where the elusive animal is known to hang out. Over the course of the day, we found 5 whale sharks (!!), ranging from a 3 meter long baby to an 8 meter long adult. It really was an amazing experience to get the chance to swim alongside these gentle, ocean giants.

We held our wedding in wine country, north of San Francisco. There's a noise ordinance there though, that prevents you from playing amplified music past 11pm. we definitely didn't want to stop the party then tough. So we found a solution: Silent Disco. At 11pm, we shut down the dance floor speakers and handed out wireless headsets to all our guests. The DJ kept spinning, and the music kept pumping, but only through the headsets. The results are pretty hilarious.
