From my experience, EVGA consistently sending out GPUs from their RMA centers back to customers or to re-sell markets that were worked on by a bunch of trained monkeys. Anything from never ending CORE reflows (that usually cause more problem later down the road than they fix) and now this ? A blob of solder was left on the board shorting voltage going to the CORE. Card worked at room temperatures but once it was cooled down in the refrigerator, solder has shrunk and card was no longer working. Inno3D 3090 came in with a note saying that original fans were making noise so owner replaced them with aftermarket fans found on aliexpress. After that, card no longer worked and ended up on my bench just to verify that it may very well be the fans that killed this GPU. If fans were not properly wired, 12v will shoot into the core via 10k resistors and thats most likely what happened in this case. Its sad to see modern GPUs not implementing fuses into circuit board anymore relying on sophisticated phase controllers and buck converters that supposed to protect the board from catching on fire. Almost any modern electronics including laptops and motherboards use lead free solder. While it may be less toxic, the device life span is significantly shortened by physical factors. Any bend, twist or a bump or shake can cause joints to break rendering your device broken and in most cases not repairable. Older devices that used leaded solder have one problem, dry capacitors. Everything else continues to work but modern electronics with lead free solder have near zero longevity. You can have a dead GPU on arrival broke during shipping sitting in a box. You can break it by simply installing it and giving it a slight twist. The list of reasons why GPU is broken is only growing longer by the day. Some manufacturers such as ASUS sometimes use leaded solder for premium boards so my question is: if GPU cost nearly $2K and some models are premium models, why wont they use leaded solder ? This Nvidia 3080 from Zotac reported to show artifacts and results in a blue screen of death. It would not display anything afterward. Following MODS software error report, i assumed the wrong chip was causing the problem but for educational purposes decided to proceed with replacing it with yet another working chip just to prove the point. This 2080 SUPER came in with a noisy fan and overheating problem. It was resolved by applying new thermal paste and propping the fan little higher so the impeller blades wont hit the wires. I suspect the fan got worn out inside and dropped low causing it to touch the wires. This EVGA is the dirtiest 3090 FTW3 ive ever worked on. Too much thermal paste and putty everywhere i had to give it a bath to clean. In the end i dont think its the paste or putty that killed this GPU but the handling of it. Handling GPU roughly, bending and twisting even a little bit can result in a disaster. MSI 4090 came DOA (dead on arrival) inside the pre-built system from unknown company. The damage this 4090 suffered rendering it "Beyond Repair" was nothing compared to the factory defect that was revealed after lifting the core. When core was lifter, a good number of "GRAY" contact pads was discovered. "GRAY" pads are simply contact pads that were covered with an oxide layer due to poor manufacturing process and quality control at the factory. The oxide layer prevents for a solder ball to stick to the surface, making connection very poor, none existent or weak or temporary at best.
