I combine various varieties of cherry tree. Summary: Cody takes us to a domestic cherry tree he planted in the middle of a grove of chokecherries. Note: it looks like winter and it's lightly snowing See Gardening With Cody Week 6: Planting Trees in Rocks to watch him plant the trees back in May 2017. He checks if the cherry tree is still alive because it's been pest damaged - turns out it is still alive and green inside. Cody brings twigs of multiple domestic cherry varieties to graft onto chokecherries. 2:24, grafting procedure known as a whip-tongue graft. Cody completes grafts and covers grafted twigs with plastic bag to prevent drying out and a brown paper bag to block out sunlight. Cody comes back to remove paper bag and plastic bag It no longer looks like winter by this point. Grafted twigs of the varieties "Stella" (not all) and "Lapins" are alive, proving that the grafting is successful. Cody elaborates plan to prune back the chokecherry foliage so that the plants divert all their resources to the grafted domestic cherry. Cody takes us to the house he rents in town. A few chokecherry grafts onto tart cherry are successful. Sweet cherry onto tart cherry grafts are also successful. But chokecherry onto sweet cherry are not successful. Take plastic off when leaves are open, taking paper bag off too early causes graft failure because the young leaves burn. "Bing" sweet cherry to "Stella" graft also successful. Cody returns to the chokecherry grove and shows that the Apple tree planted in May 2017 has also survived. On a rainy day I try firing a pellet gun using helium instead of air. You may ask: "But how do some pellet guns get bullets faster than the speed of sound?" well some air molecules are going faster than the average speed, half of them in fact, and some pellet guns have a plunger that compresses the gas suddenly thus heating it and increasing the speed of the particles. Also I didn't use hydrogen because, though it would be even faster, holding a large bag of hydrogen mixed with air seemed a bit sketchy. A demonstration of the leidenfrost effect, enjoy! the water and nitrogen vaporize so quickly that they form a layer of gas that the liquid can levitate on, the nitrogen of course can do it at much lower temps. I show how the element Dysprosium becomes magnetic when added to liquid nitrogen. Many people have been asking how it gets the energy to run, I've been thinking about this and I believe that it gains its energy from the increase in entropy as the nitrogen boils into a gas while cooling the metal. The cooling decreases the entropy of the metal allowing it to be attracted by the magnet and do work, but Since the gas is escaping the system and increasing the entropy of the universe, it does not violate thermodynamics. Sorry about the audio, Ive looked into it and its not getting any better, I'll see If I can do the next video differently.

Putting oxygen on a fire makes more fire; who knew? lol My initial reaction seems to be mostly accurate; the "explosion" was about the same or less but there was way more fire probably because the fire wasnt being suppressed by a non flammable gas. I test to see if gunpowder will burn when very cold, I also destroy my mini cannon...

Turns out liquid nitrogen is no good for putting out burning oil. The nitrogen instantly expands 700X as it turns to gas, this throws the oil up into the air where it burns rapidly. I set out to see what it will take to feed honeybees with sugar beets and end up making the worlds worst taffy.

When a large truck passes me my speed is temperately boosted by about 4mph while using the same amount of fuel. Eventually I would like to repeat this experiment but with the throttle mechanically locked to eliminate human error.

I was informed of a strange smell in a bee hive fearing foulbrood I visited the hive to smell it for myself.

Many minerals contain iron but are not noticeably magnetic. Using standard geology class tools I devise a method to detect iron without a microscope. I think that you could also use this as a test to determining how much magnetic Iron is present by replacing the penny with a series of known masses once you find how strongly the magnet is attracted you could calculate the quantity of iron.

Arthur and I go down to The Home Depot and put my Geiger counter next to a pallet of potassium chloride. We find that it would be a dangerous level if you were around it all the time. The activity of the ton of potassium should be about 26 million becquerels (disintegrations/second) we dont pick up near that much since the potassium blocks most of its own radiation.

This is the first episode of a new series that I want to do. I will be playing a modded version of Kerbal Space Program that is as close to real life as I can make it. I want to use this series to teach science. My girlfriend, Canyon, will be helping and I am limiting myself to 30 minutes of play per episode.

I try my hand at cutting a cable using only a small Swiss army knife.

I create a model of a solar system to show why planets are so hard to find.

This is a time lapse (about an hour) of a pendulum swinging on a 6ft tether in my basement; you can clearly see that the earth is rotating below it.

I show some of my secrets for getting honey out of comb.

I show my method of liquifying large amounts of honey after it has crystallized. really though any method that heats the honey to about 140 degrees (F) for a long time will do the job.

now that its getting into mid summer, if the hives dont have at least 10 frames filled I will combine them so that I will have hives that have hope of surviving the winter.

I build a very simple liquid fueled rocket engine for testing. I wasn't able to get it to fire but I learned a lot and as soon as I do get a good burn I will go ahead and build a more sophisticated rocket.

I make a small test batch of Fuming Red Nitric Acid and test it out in preparation for possibly using it as rocket propellent.

I build a fire and see what happens.

I put bees inside my parents house.

This is a video of what I did during my free time while at the Mars Desert Research Station's refit party.

I try out my new checklist for inspecting bee hives.

A 300 gallon tank that I have had plants growing in for the last 8 years.

The reason they where acting like this is probably due to then not having a queen, bees get very defensive while raising new queens because if they fail the hive dies. the behavior is similar to Americanized bees but they are indeed a European variety.

ya I know the video is rubbish even for me but I hope the sound is acceptable. There is a little bit of noise from the camera and me breathing but most of the sound is from the bees. not many beekeepers know about this sound but hearing this can tell you a lot about the hive: it can tell you the bees are building comb, they have a queen (bees dont make much comb if they are queen-less) and it can tell you that they have plenty of food. I once bought a stethoscope just to be able to listen for this but I never did use it in the year of beekeeping series since I cant seem to find it.

I continue my rocket testing: much exploding

In this episode The Cody shows his recipe for beans and hot chocolate. So turns out that "cooking with cody" was already used on youtube so it will be known as "cooking with the cody" from now on.

A strong magnet is placed under a dish of electrolyte and the solution spins when a current is applied but not in the way that I expected. Update 3-28-14: I now have the answers and the explanation video will be out soon!

when using a pressure cooker it is difficult to check the temperature because you can't see inside and so I use an indirect method.

This is the first episode of a new series I would like to produce.

A simple electric motor using a magnet, a copper wire, and a battery. I will eventually make a video explaining how it works.

I was playing with some recording software and set the camera on my hibiscus cutting throughout the night; I found the results somewhat interesting.

A simple liquid fueled rocket engine that runs on hydrochloric acid and sodium carbonate solution. It doesn't get much thrust but it does work in a similar way as a shuttle engine. I built it so I can get a feel for the workings of an engine before I build one that uses liquid oxygen and kerosene. I put my hand in a jar and suck out the air in order to find out whether or not it would be possible to take your glove off in space.

I blow the bottom out of a bottle by hitting the top with my hand. Its a common demonstration but I decided to take a whack at it.

I cheak out my hives to see how they are doing before winter.

I make a candle out of bees wax and then electrocute it.

Today I helped do a trash audit of the school and I decided that I would try to make something interesting by recycling what I found.

I render down my supply of wax in preparation for a candle making workshop i am putting on.

This is the second round of small scale tests following my balloon in sand experiments.

Attempting to bottle this summers honey; it has started to crystallize, is a little cold, and has a low water content so it moves very slow.

We were supposed to answer 3 questions: "Why do you want to go to mars? How are you qualified? And what is your sense of humor?" I hope you will see that I answered the questions quite well. Winter is coming so I take surplus honey from my hives before it gets too cold. (My payment for a season of work.) I will show extraction in my next episode; which is already filmed but is very long and I still have to edit it down.

I wanted to know how much pressure is exerted on something burred in sand.

We look at the westminster hive to get an idea of how they did this season.

My take on designing a coil gun, this is but my first, more to come.

I put together a standard super. I tried to do it in real time but my camera wouldn't cooperate and I lost 5 min or so, but gives an idea of what's involved.

A copper plate moving through a strong magnetic field experiences a resistance to motion caused by eddy currents in the metal, the effect is more noticeable at low temperatures.

I dilute various acids incorrectly, to see what happens. I also add water to a base and a salt for comparison. The nitric was very pure 99%+ (anhydrous). The water was from rain collected over painted steel and the other chemicals ( HCl, NaOH & NH4NO3) were industrial grade.

I find a nest of bumble bees and move them into my greenhouse. Sorry about the poor video quality.

I bought some defect solar cells off ebay and soldered them together, isn't pretty but it sure works.

Now that its been a week I check on the new queens to see how they are coming. I also look to see if there are any more queen cells, re-fix the broken comb, and give the bees some sugar. 16

I bring the box with the queen over and transplant the bees into the Westminster hive. 15

In this episode I find the queen, move her to a nuc box for transport, and put the queen cells I made into the now queenless hive. this video originally was over an hour and I cut out half so... I actually should do that more.

I build a few more nuc boxes to take on the extra packages of bees I ordered so I have more time to build full sized hives.

I make queen cups, make a nuc and graft larva to start the queen making process. it ended up kinda long... I guess I could have cut out the the boring bits but then you wouldn't get my funny concentration expressions.

I combine my queen-less colony with the colony that survived winter with no lid. 10

The bees have started bringing food to the hive and are on track for me to split them soon.

Unfortunately they have somehow lost their queen and are not building back up after the winter so I compress the hive to a more manageable size.

More proof that cold weather is not what kills bees. turns out the hive was open like that for most of the winter and the bees are just fine.

I cleaned the hive and replaced the screen in preparation for new bees.

wherein I put extra drone comb into the hive to stimulate drone production.

the box hive hasn't quite come out of hibernation so i have to change my plans slightly.

I managed to talk my sister into helping film, as I do a seasons first inspection of my strongest hive.

Unfortunately despite my efforts the Westminster bees did not make it through the winter. but no worries I have a plan bee.

I really should not have opened the hive with the temperature bellow 40 degrees but I had to check on them and you cant always visit in good whether. besides I only got stung on my jacket ( the dark color attracts stings more than my pale skin) and I am not really counting that. I will keep a running total of the stings I receive to my body over the year. (I have never bothered counting and I am curious)

A Beekeeper should have some wood working skills as... well bees like to live in wood. wow 22 minutes I better make that my rough time limit. I can already tell these episodes will have very variable length.

As described in the video I am starting a project where I take a camera every time I work on bee stuff so you can see what its like to be a bee keeper and learn as if you where doing it yourself, or at least closer to that than just reading about it or taking a class where you are hit with a huge amount of information all at once and then promptly forget it. I do know quite a lot but I don't claim to know everything and I guarantee that I will be learning things even as I am filming but isn't that part of the fun? I want to be very honest so I will do minimal editing and so probably some of the time the videos will be boring or rough; but I hope to get better as I go. for the year I am thinking March 1st 2013 (day this video was made) to March 1st 2014 if you have any suggestions I am always open to trying new things or just helping facilitate experiments, so please leave comments.

I got me a small camera and I thought I would try sending it up on a balloon. sorry about the spinning this was the first time I have ever tried this. I sent the camera up again but pointing sideways with some stabilizing fins but unfortunately the balloon flew into a cloud and I lost track of it loosing the camera.

everyone thinks I have a strange way of doing dishes so I thought I would film myself doing them. unfortunately things didn't go quite to plan. I think this is the first time I have ever filmed my self getting hurt. while I was washing a glass cup the cup broke and cut me. it wasn't that bad, just a lot of blood.

Its depressing to see so many bees dead but the hive is still doing OK. A grand total of 2 bees came back to life when I warmed them up; I took the survivors back to the hive and buried the rest by the creek.

This is what happens when I cant sleep

The 2nd gun fires at the same speed relative to its self regardless of the speed it is moving relative to the earth so I figured why not add the speed of another gun and get much more energy? To my knowledge no one has ever tried shooting a gun from a gun before. Perhaps using this method I could overcome the limits of gas guns and actually launch something into space. This was just a proof of concept test, perhaps next week I will shoot at something or start building bigger. Everything is homemade even the gun powder.

The Maths as promised: Time of fall (Box is actually 23inches above snow level): 2ft = 1/2(32)t^2 2/16 = t^2 t = .35s Distance traveled: 253 strides x 2.5ft/stride = 633ft Speed: v = d/t v = 633/.35 v = about 1800fps this seems really fast so as a check I looked at the video to find how fast the gun recoiled (good thing I didn't put a rock behind it) I know the mass of the 2 objects and I know that the momentum should be the same assuming no losses. the gun weighs 3.7kg and the ball weighs .045kg. the gun recoiled at about 6.2m/s so a little more math... Momentum of the gun: 6.2m/s x 3.7kg = 23 kg*m/s Momentium of the ball: 23kg*m/s = .045kg x V V = 23/.045 V = 511m/s 511m x 3.281ft/m = 1677ft so according to the momentum change the ball got nearly 1700fps! not quite 1800fps but still pretty fast for a golf ball, no wonder I keep loosing my balls.
