Parking lots don't make money. Since most people drive their cars to shop, we can't exactly get rid of them, either. Carmel, Indiana may have found a way to "have its cake and eat it, too." They are using Tax Increment Financing (TIF) to make parking lots magically move out of sight. And in the process, people are walking places, and the city is on track to make millions. With 300,000 cars and trucks a day, the fire underneath the Interstate 10 skyway in Los Angeles is quite inconvenient. Let's look at how quickly they can get traffic moving again, how they'll fix the freeway, and most importantly... why is their flammable junk underneath the freeways? Some cities and states mount their traffic signals horizontally. And I've always wondered why. And evidently, so do you. This is one of the most-asked questions you and other road fans have sent me. So, I dug in and found an answer: Four design considerations engineers in Texas, Florida, Nebraska, and New Mexico think about which leads to horizontal traffic signals. Avid bicyclists roll their eyes as state engineers rebuild a highway through town. Tyranny of the car, right? Raised medians reduce left turns which prevents crashes (and saves lives). But cities only block left turns for some businesses and not others. How can the engineers decide fairly? Traffic travels in both directions. So it makes sense we'd have a malicious moniker for two-way left turn lanes (TWLTLs). Are they actually dangerous, though? Let's look at the safety of these middle lanes. After all, they are on roads pretty much everywhere in the United States. As I review the development of the Lexus RX300, it's easy to see how this particular crossover SUV did more to fuel the sedan apocalypse than just about any other car in recent history. The RX certainly isn't the first crossover. Other pioneers certainly came first -- like the Toyota RAV4, AMC Eagle, and wagons from Subaru. The RX300 proved to Lexus, and to luxury automakers around the world, that not only was a car-based SUV possible, it would also be a hot seller.

Toll agencies are tearing down staffed booths (cash lanes) because they are dangerous and slow. Instead, we have to start using electronic toll collection (ETC) -- those special transponder passes. But most toll passes won't work out of state. With no toll booths, how do you pay when you are on vacation? I speak with Samuel Johnson, the chief operations officer for a southern California toll road agency (The Toll Roads - TCA), about a cool new technology which will soon make paying a toll easier than ever. A double-decker freeway pancaked onto itself, crushing over 40 people under the mass of its rubble. Now, exactly 30 years later, I dig into an important government report which shows the lessons Civil Engineering has learned -- to ensure the Cypress Freeway Disaster is the last. Road nerd? Read the full report yourself (State of California): http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/esc/earthquake_engineering/seismic_advisory_board/compete_against_time.pdf Enjoy my video? It's a crying shame how that OTHER channel (which claims to review "regular cars") has failed to film a review of the most "regular car" of all time! Hey buddy, you keep gallivanting around Asia driving Kei cars (which are the FARTHEST thing from a regular car, BTW). (To be fair, Hoovies Garage DID already review this car's predecessor [XV10]. But that generation was still a bit buggy. Toyota really ironed out a lot of the rough edges with this generation, making this truly the KING OF CAMRYS!) ----------------------------------- Like my video? The Lonestar State now beats out California as America's "king of the road." I contend that in Texas's short-term exuberance for expansion, they've some very serious long-term mistakes. Enjoy my video? I do have a hankerin' for some Whataburger! :-) https://www.patreon.com/roadguyrob

Here's the real reason why Caltrans is removing Botts Dots (turtles) from the state's hundreds of miles of freeway (Hint: It has something to do with Tesla). Enjoy my video? https://www.patreon.com/roadguyrob

This week, I'm in SoCal and I noticed how the gantry navigation signs on the freeway are often blinged out with these little rhinestone-looking things. I now know the reason. Enjoy my video? https://www.patreon.com/roadguyrob

Doc Brown is a real jerk. I take a look at just how far Marty McFly would have to ride his skateboard to get to real-life Twin Pines Mall from the site of his house in Arleta, California. Enjoy my video? https://www.patreon.com/roadguyrob

It's called a 'Continuous Flow Intersection.' I take a quick look at traffic signal engineering and how this new type of displaced left-turn improves traffic flow by 30 percent. Enjoy my video? I wouldn't say "no" to a chocolate shake :-) https://www.patreon.com/roadguyrob

Traffic signals are not scary. Roundabouts can be, especially if you've never driven one before. Let's take a fun dive into America's fastest-growing transportation design. Are these spinny circles really better that a traffic light or just a passing fad? Enjoy my video? https://www.patreon.com/roadguyrob

Recently, Doug DeMuro reviewed the iconic 1990 Lexus LS400 and he got it DEAD WRONG! Watch his review here: https://youtu.be/BqDiWhlwrZ4 ----------------------------------- Like my video? You won't believe how much money my Excel spreadsheet said I made after 9 hours of driving. On a whim, I signed up for both Uber and Lyft to see how much net profit I could make. After a long day of driving, I opened Microsoft Excel and entered my gross income and subtracted all my expenses. It gave me a picture of just how lucrative it could be for me to drive for ridesharing apps. ----------------------------------- Like my video? My comparison of research into the proliferation of access near a freeway interchanges (NCHRP Synthesis 332) with real-world case studies presented at Transportation Research Board (TRB) conferences. Presented at Brigham Young University (BYU) on April 5, 2018.

My award-winning student presentation to the Utah chapter of the Institute of Traffic Engineers (ITE). My presentation explores options available to replace the fuel excise tax with public-private toll roads or a vehicle-miles traveled (VMT) tax.

An in-class presentation I gave showing performance benefit from adding flyovers and braided ramps to the SR-201 and I-215 interchange in West Valley City, Utah. This is my term project for CEEn 662 (Traffic Flow Fundamentals).
