It might be surprising to know that in electric trains, the power collected from the overheadlines ends up in the grounding cable of the track after flowing through the wheels. Three phase power conversion, regenerative braking and zig-zag overheadlines - all these make electric train technology quite unique. Be it Burj Khalifa, the Pentagon, or your house, the weight of these structures is ultimately borne by a structural element called a footing. A design mistake in the footing can result in the collapse of the whole building, which is why a proper foundation design is crucial. Footings are the most important part of the foundation. Their job is to distribute the heavy load of the building, concentrated on the columns, to the wider surface area of soil to achieve structural stability. Axial flux motors are considered the ultimate future of electric vehicles and most importantly of electric aviation because they have a high torque-to-weight ratio, which is ideal for aircraft. Companies like Rolls Royce and Magnax have intense research and development in progress on these motors. Interestingly, the first-ever electrical generator, developed by the genius Michael Faraday, was an axial flux type. You can see the axis of rotation is parallel to flux lines. Magnetically levitated trains are common nowadays. However, the MagLev train the Central Japan Railway Company developed is quite unique and superior to the other trains. Running at more than 600 km per hour, it has achieved the status of ‘fastest train.’ This train uses superconducting magnets, which is why it is called SC MagLev. Once charged with an exciting current, the superconducting magnets of this train produce a circulating DC current and strong magnetic field forever, with zero loss. Let’s understand more about this successfully tested train technology, which is projected to overtake other magnetic levitation technologies by the year 2027. We all are familiar with microwave ovens. The component inside this machine that’s responsible for producing microwaves is known as a magnetron. When high voltage is applied to the cathode of a magnetron, it ejects many electrons through thermionic emission. When the electron comes towards the anode, it repels the nearest cavity’s electrons. Due to this electron displacement, positive charges form on that surface. The displaced electrons will obviously make a surface of negative charges on the nearby cavity. Now something peculiar happens; the same charge pattern is automatically induced in all the cavities. Do you know how charges induced in just one cavity lead to induction of charges in the other cavities? Let's explore the answer in this video. We thank EMWorks for their FEA support. Everybody knows what happens in an accident if you don’t wear a seatbelt. What you see in this accident looks really painful in slow motion. Modern seatbelts are not just mechanisms which arrest your motion; rather. they cleverly allow enough movement to minimise internal injuries and help you land safely on an airbag. In this video, we won’t just learn the working of a seatbelt; we will learn why modern seatbelt mechanisms are designed the way they are. So buckle your seatbelt, and let’s start a design journey. Do you know that a semiconductor device called a ‘thyristor’ solves the huge issue of power transfer from a generating station to consumers located far away? Traditional AC power transmissions face huge power losses and also suffer from the issue of stability and controllability. For long distance power transmission, HVDC technology is the right choice. In HVDC, bulk amounts of AC power have to be converted to DC with the help of converting stations. After that the DC power is transmitted to the consumers. This important task of conversion is performed by a unique semiconductor switching device called a ‘thyristor’, more specifically by silicon-controlled rectifiers. Let’s explore how a thyristor works. A portable power supply has become the lifeline of the modern technological world, especially the lithium-ion battery. Imagine a world where all cars are driven by induction motors and not internal combustion engines. Induction motors are far superior to IC engines in almost all engineering aspects, as well as being more robust and cheaper. Another huge disadvantage of IC engines is that they only produce usable torque in a narrow band of engine RPM. Considering all of these factors, induction motors are definitely the perfect choice for an automobile. However, the power supply for an induction motor is the real bottleneck in achieving a major induction motor revolution in the automobile industry. Let’s explore how Tesla, with the help of lithium-ion cells, solved this issue and why lithium-ion cells are going to become even better in the future. We thank Mr. Ravindra Kempaiah for his invaluable technical contribution for this video. Induction motors have been ruling the industrial world for many decades. In the induction motors used in lift and hoists, you will see a type of rotor called a slip ring rotor, whereas in most of the other applications you will see a simpler, squirrel cage type of rotor. The ‘Second Law of Thermodynamics’ is a fundamental law of nature, unarguably one of the most valuable discoveries of mankind; however this law is slightly confusing for most engineers or students. The main reason for this is because it has so many complex terms in it and that there are many ways that this second law can be stated, but most importantly, the majority do not understand what are the applications of this law. In this video we will create a real physical insight into this law with a minimum use of mathematics. Most of us enjoy the smooth and effortless feeling of driving in an automatic transmission car. The driving is effortless because you don’t need to worry about gear changing and you don’t have a clutch pedal to operate. In an automatic transmission car the work, of the clutch pedal, is automatically done by a hidden component, which is truly an engineering marvel, the torque converter. The torque converter can even multiply the torque. Let’s see how this purely mechanical device performs its tasks. In manual transmission cars, some drivers partially press down on the clutch pedal to make the engine operate more smoothly. Some drivers even have the habit of resting their foot on the clutch pedal. This is known as ‘riding’ the clutch. However, do you know that this habit is really bad for your car? Electric cars or internal combustion engine cars—which is better? Electric cars were in their heyday back in 1900, but a sudden rise in petrol engine cars, accompanied by battery technology inefficiencies killed electric cars by 1920. However, with recent improvements in battery technology and power electronics, electric cars have made a strong comeback. We will compare these totally different technologies scientifically, and come to understand which is superior. Here we are using Tesla model S as electric car to compare with its petrol engine car counter part.
