IMPORTANT NOTE: The only ways to remove a trapped key are (1) to enter the house trough another door or window and disassemble the lock from the inside, or (2) drill the lock. Use accordingly. 👍 In addition, note that this trap works only if your door opens by turning the lock core counterclockwise. However the cylinder can be modified to work by adding construction keying holes on the left side of the core.

Sorry for the poor video quality. I inadvertently uploaded this video in SD, and not HD. I would have re-uploaded it, but I'd have to delete the old video, and I didn't want for everyone to lose their entries... so deal with it. :-P

Chinese 94mm shutter lock picked, gutted and evaluated next to the lock from which its design was copied. As always, you get what you pay for! These locks go by many names... Don't be fooled because yours isn't a "Golden Lotus," like the one in this video.

Sometimes a video really doesn't accurately portray the difficulty of a pick. That was the case here. I don't know if the stars aligned for this lock, or if all similar Chubb locks are made to such high standards. In any case, this was a tricky little pick.

Upon watching my own video, I realized that I need to clarify my point on the key profile… I was wondering if the ML key profile on the American padlock stood for “Master Lock” (American Lock’s parent company), not “Master Locksmith,” as was the case with the Lockwood.

What a find! In a pile of cheap locks, I came across something that I had never seen before: an 11 pin, pin-in-pin, tubular lock made by the Chicago Lock Company in the 1970s. In this video, I give you an up close view of how to pick this UL rated lock.

The lock mechanism in these padlocks is remarkably similar to the older Maxis and Golden Mean locks. They are a bit intimidating because they are so different. However, with only modest modifications to your picking methods, there's no reason why these locks need to be difficult.

This video responds to the many questions I have received asking how I pick particularly nasty paracentric keyways with apparent ease. I've hinted at and partially explained this method in previous videos, but decided that a standalone video with a visual depiction would be helpful. I hope you find this helpful.

This is not a horrible lock. To the contrary, its pick resistance is better than most residential locks sold on the US market (which isn't saying much). What I take issue with is the "Exceeds Maximum Security" marketing nonsense. Putting aside the metaphysical question of whether that's even possible, consumers reading this packaging would reasonably believe that this lock provides excellent pick resistance. Not so. While it is better than most (particularly, most other Kwiksets), it is still child's play for an experienced picker to defeat this lock.
5M5lRvQ05Us | 07 Dec 2015
What an interesting lock! While it superficially looks like a variation on normal tubular locks, once we look inside, we see that it is completely different. What, from the outside, looks like 8 pin tumblers are actually sliders with 2-3 false gates and one true gate on each. These sliders are divided into banks of four, with each bank independently controlling a separate sidebar. Based on these components, this lock deserves its reputation as a difficult pick! That said, the teardown/analysis shown in this video reveals certain design features that pickers can leverage to reliably open these locks. I close the video with a pick/gut putting the lessons gleaned in our analysis to good use. Unfortunately, this is yet another example of a UL437 rated lock that does not live up to the 10 minute pick resistance standard... at least when approached intelligently.
cyaDHlnaQKM | 01 Dec 2015
What a lock! A tight, paracentric keyway, good tolerances, a passive sidebar with an active element, an active sidebar controlled by five sliders with false and true gates, and finally, as if all of that wasn't enough, a trap pin to ensnare the unwary! It took some time, but once you get a feel for the sliders, this lock can be picked without too much difficulty. Finally, my apologies for going out of frame for a few seconds while discussing the active element of the passive sidebar. Enjoy!

This lock was a lesson for me in not believing everything I see on the internet. I had some difficulty with this lock because I read that the bottom pins were active, and I was trying to pick them. Not so. They are a particularly nasty type of passive pin. After understanding what was inside, this lock became relatively easy to open.
pPeun2Hf2Os | 21 Nov 2015
The DUO is a UL437-rated lock. That means it is certified to withstand 10 minutes of picking with commercially available tools. In this video, I explain how I pick these locks in a fraction of this time, and pick two of them in about 2 minutes each. Watch to learn how you can do this also! Good luck.
jY9PJxVWORE | 21 Nov 2015
The Ace II tubular lock is one of the more common tubular locks available. For reasons that escape me, it has built up a reputation as being particular hard to pick... probably because it does not share the common tubular lock design flaw that allows fast self-impressioning. The pick-resistant reputation is not well-deserved in my opinion. With a little practice, these locks can regularly be picked in under a minute.
ne7hcNA34_I | 13 Nov 2015
Mul-T-Locks have a well-deserved reputation for pick resistance. However, not all Mul-T-Locks are created equal and this one seems to be on the easier side (likely because it lacks spooled inner drivers). Even so, users of these locks should take some comfort in the fact that these locks provide above average security and exceptional pick-resistance.

This is the EVVA DPI -- Also know as the old version of the DPI (the new version has sliders and two sidebars!). Thanks to BosnianBill for sending me this great lock! Lots of challenges in one package including a tricky keyway, tight tolerances, security pins, a passive sidebar with an active element, and a trap pin! All of that said, these locks don't have to be difficult if you have the right tools and are armed with a little foreknowledge.
OEOmzZrEs6w | 03 Nov 2015
The security provided by "box store" locks is generally unimpressive. If people knew how bad the locks they use to secure their valuables are, they would be appalled! In this video, I address two locks that are sold as "high security," but would give a skilled thief only a few moments of pause. I bypass the Master M176 faster than you can open the lock by entering the combination. I then pick open the M930 in seconds.
GTmarUnRPvA | 04 Oct 2015
This lock was advertised and sold to me as a "pick proof" padlock. Unfortunately, most consumers don't understand quite how outrageous this claim really is. As this video shows, not only can this lock be picked, but it can be picked very quickly.
NX7y7LYDrxA | 10 Sep 2015
Here's the video that introduced this lock to the picking community: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kZI1hicyo0 Watching my video, I realized that my explanation of the gravity attack was not very good. It's really quite simple. When the lock is right side up, both springs and gravity push all of the pins down (towards the key). When the lock is upside down, the springs push the key pins up, while gravity pulls the driver pins down. This creates a large sheer line they can be found easily with raking. Further, if you overset a key pin, the inner driver pin pushes it back over the shear line without affecting the set of the outer driver pin! After that it is a simple matter of running the rake along the pins a couple times to set the inner pins.

Who would have thought that a CEN grade 5 ("Extra High Security") padlock would pick open so quickly? The truth is that CEN ratings have no pick-resistance requirements. As such, this video should come as no surprise to anyone who is paying attention.

PSA - Stay away from these safes! I use mine to store dangerous chemicals I use in metalwork, to keep my son away. But he's turning 5 soon... I may need something higher security to keep him away! EDIT - My thoughts on this "safe" are evolving. When one considers the other products in the same size and price class, this HF "safe" compares well. Most size/price comparables are constructed of much thinner thin sheet metal and have equally terrible locks. Thus, if this is the best you can afford, go for it... though I would highly recommend swapping out the cam lock with something a bit more robust.

This video is a good representation of how I usually practice. I like to pick several of the same types of lock in a row... then mix them up and start again. This makes it (i) difficult to remember the quirks of a particular lock, (ii) more challenging and, (iii) IMO, more like picking a lock encountered in the wild. I didn't tear the locks down afterwards (as is the YouTube lock picking protocol) for two reasons. First, it would be a royal pain to do that to ten locks. Second, anyone with ears, eyes and a rudimentary knowledge of picking will know that I didn't remove the security pins from the amount of clicking, and the counter rotation on the core. I'll do teardowns in future videos as appropriate.
