Why Do We Need Secure Storage Legislation? | Sandy Hook Promise

The goal of secure storage is to eliminate child-involved shootings. This can be accomplished by ensuring children (and others who shouldn’t have access) aren’t able to get their hands on guns. Ethan’s Law would require the safe and secure storage of firearms to prevent children or those legally prohibited from possessing a firearm from gaining access to them. It would also incentivize states to adopt their own laws regarding secure storage by creating federal funds to assist with implementation. Sweet Child O'Mine by Detroit Youth Choir

uzlP7_PVNjQ | 24 Aug 2022

Sweet Child O'Mine by Detroit Youth Choir

As kids everywhere return to school, the Detroit Youth Choir released their own take on the song made famous by Guns N’ Roses to call for continued progress in the wake of recent tragedies in Uvalde, Oxford, Highland Park, and Buffalo. Over 50 Choir members aged between 8-18 years old, under the leadership of Artistic Director Anthony T. White contributed to this new arrangement of “Sweet Child O’ Mine” which was created by Grammy Award winning producer Gerard Smerek from Yessian Music, and creative agency Imagination, the team behind the Detroit Youth Choir’s 2020 anthem: “Glory”. The song choice was inspired by the story of Layla Salazar, age 11, who was one of the nineteen children and two teachers tragically killed at Robb Elementary in Ulvade, Texas. Each morning as her Dad Vinnie Salazar drove Layla to school in his truck, they would sing-along together to “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” by Guns N’ Roses. The song, Layla’s father wrote on Facebook, was the only thing bringing him peace right now. About Detroit Youth Choir The Detroit Youth Concert Choir & Performing Arts Company (DYC) is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization that services young people throughout the Detroit Metropolitan area. It teaches and develops students between the ages of 8-18 through music education, dance, and theatrical arts. In 2019, DYC finished second on NBC’s America’s Got Talent and have since performed at various events around the City of Detroit, nationally, and internationally. The choir currently has 101 members. In 2020 they released their version of the song “Glory” created by John Legend and Common which was called by Deadline Hollywood as “one of the anthems of a summer dominated by a call for social change”, receiving millions of views and performed for President Biden, Vice President Harris and President Obama. The group went onto receive a Stellar Award in 2021 for their version of “Glory” and have been commissioned for a docuseries on the choir for Disney+. According to SAVE Promise Club student leader Izzy: “The student members of the Feltingoff SAVE Promise Club play a huge leadership role when it comes to planning Say Something Week and the activities that we organize for it. This year during our school’s Say Something Week, students helped to decorate the school with positive messages, present the importance of saying something to other students of all different ages, and participate in contests such as writing and essay or poem and designing a poster that represents what Say Something Week means to them. Through these activities, the students of our club were able to help engage the rest of the students at our school in Say Something Week and educate everyone on the importance behind the week.” Learn more about Say Something: https://www.sandyhookpromise.org/our-programs/say-something/

Westmont Hilltop: Say Something Week

It was an all-out green-out at Westmont Hilltop High School and across the entire community! Everyone got involved in the Say Something initiative including the library, old stone bridge, banks, and women’s help center. The local Steel mill showed support and solidarity by adding green to their hard hats! The SAVE Promise Club organized the town going green initiative. The student leaders “empower others to act” at Westmont Hilltop High School. One way they did this was by training 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students how to report warning signs and threats on the Safe2Say Anonymous Reporting System. “Growing the SAVE Promise Club to 18 members this year, students have truly taken ownership of the curriculum – one student sharing after their first presentation that they can’t believe they get to activity improve their own school!” Learn more about Say Something: https://www.sandyhookpromise.org/our-programs/say-something/

Triad Math & Science Academy: Say Something Week Video

This was the Academy’s first-ever Say Something Week! Events were planned and produced by 6th-8th grade students trained in both Start With Hello and Say Something earlier in the school year. These student leaders were eager to share the messages with the rest of the student body, but first wanted to know more about what their peers knew and thought about violence prevention and school safety. They created a survey to gather baseline data to gauge beliefs and experiences surrounding school violence prevention. In addition to daily themed activities, students hosted a March Tiger Teen Summit on the topic of Say Something. During this virtual summit, survey results were shared, and students had a chance to engage in a student-led Town Hall. Snitching versus being an upstander was a hot topic. Great student leadership, Tigers! Learn more about Say Something: https://www.sandyhookpromise.org/our-programs/say-something/

What is SAVE Promise Club About?

What is SAVE Promise Club About?

SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere) Promise Clubs are a place for young people across the country to show their leadership, creativity and passion for protecting their friends, schools and communities from violence BEFORE it happens. SAVE Promise Clubs are established and led by students and are a powerful approach to preventing gun violence (and other forms of violence and victimization) because they recognize the unique role that young people play in making their schools and communities safer. A SAVE Promise Club can be a stand-alone club or embedded into an existing club, such as SADD, Student Council, FCCLA, or another student leadership, civic or kindness club. Many SAVE Promise Clubs are successful meeting only once or twice a month and organizing four activities throughout the year. Learn more at https://www.sandyhookpromise.org/savepromiseclub.

Peer Mediators Lead Say Something Week Activities

Wyandotte High School-Peer Mediators, Kansas City, Kansas won a Say Something Week Award for this outstanding video. Find out how you can get involved in Say Something Week: https://www.sandyhookpromise.org/our-programs/say-something/say-something-week/ Here are highlights from their award submission: Peer Mediators decided to focus on social media, as it was identified as a major factor of youth violence in their school community. Students and staff were asked to upload positive pictures and posts on Facebook or Instagram with #saysomethingbulldogs. The student leaders also emphasized a key ingredient to preventing violence: the trusted adult. Therefore, the mediators asked students to write a postcard to a trusted adult. They wanted students to think about who they could go to when they needed to talk to someone about youth violence. The CTE Teacher Jamie Craig stated: “As we were conducting the events throughout the week, I had many students come to me and open up about youth violence they had seen or were experiencing, at that moment. One student broke down because her sister had just attempted suicide the day before and she said she wished she would've seen the signs, but didn't know what to look for. Just seeing the reality of my students and hearing their stories was eye opening. This is an issue that I advocate for every day because I have lost too many to youth violence. So, even hearing their stories, helped me open up and tell them mine and I believe it brought us closer, as a class, a community and as a school.”

SAVE Promise Clubs | Sandy Hook Promise

Francine Wheeler Testifies to Pennsylvania Legislature | Sandy Hook Promise

Francine Wheeler, on behalf of Sandy Hook Promise, the non-profit organization created by community members of Newtown, CT in the aftermath of the tragic mass shooting that claimed the lives of 20 first grade children and six educators, issued the following video statement, including: "...Today a convicted felon—who can't pass a background check, who can't go into a licensed firearm dealer and buy an assault rifle like the one that killed my son—can buy a rifle from a private seller or go online and, with a few clicks, do the same thing, no questions asked. It's time for a vote on expanding background checks to all gun purchases in Pennsylvania. An overwhelming majority of residents and gun owners agree it's the right thing to do." This is the second time Francine has spoken out on behalf of expanded background checks in Pennsylvania, having testified in front of the House Judiciary Committee last summer.
