Then Next Comes

Sort of newish book of depressing poems: https://tinyurl.com/27fdfh63 (you may need to change your region) My other stuff: Books what I wrote, yo ► https://www.amazon.com/Exurb1a/e/B06XFM14M8 For sending personalised insults ► https://www.facebook.com/exurb1a/ T-shirts, mugs, and sadness ► https://teespring.com/stores/exurb1a I also make horrendous music ► https://soundcloud.com/exurbia-1 Help me to do this full-time if you're deranged enough (and thank you kindly) ► https://www.patreon.com/exurb1r Pointless bonus trivia: There's a great BBC series from a while back called A History of the World in 100 Objects – big recommend. A few years ago I was sat around being useless and miserable in my apartment and suddenly got the idea to do A History of the Future in 100 Objects instead, a scifi story from the perspective of a museum looking back on a million years of history – it seemed like a fun inversion of the original format. I worked on the script for a few weeks and almost liked it, but couldn't find the 'hook' for the thing and it fell apart like most silly ideas do. A few years went by and I got a bit depresso and self-pitying about no new fun ideas turning up, and decided to go through some old scripts to see if there was anything else worth going back to. It all sucked, usual derivative rehashed ya de ya da. Then I stumbled on the museum thing again. It was a bit like getting a sudden unexpected and frankly undeserved tax rebate. With a few years of distance it was all terribly exciting for some reason, and when I tried to tie it up this time it more or less wrote itself when I got out of its way. I don't know why writing is like this sometimes, but it is often like this sometimes. It only operates on its own terms, and the more you order it to work, the less it cooperates. Sometimes things finish themselves in a day, sometimes they take a few years of not looking directly at them, sometimes they never pan out and it's never obvious why. Also I notice a guy called Adrian Hon already wrote A GODDAMN BOOK called The Future in 100 Objects in 2013, years before I started thinking about any of this, and I'm sure it's a great read and I hope he gets scurvy. And as ever, your mystery link: https://youtu.be/YRCmmJZRyJs?si=o7ce_r0evHeZlrFt P.S - Sorry I was away a while. A new book is almost ready if that's something you care about but it took a spot of thinking offline for a bit. You'll be pleased to hear it's even more pretentious than the last ones. The cat sends her regards. Is that a new haircut by the way? It really suits you if I may say so.

Lots of that time was faffing around with a Word document, not even sure what the point of the script was, but anyhow - today, very excited to be finally uploading and rid of the thing, there I was doing a bit of last minute polishing in the video editor and suddenly I notice I've deleted half the video in the timeline. Just gone. I reload the old save file but it's too late, I've written over it already. About a month of work gone in three seconds of mis-clicking. I'm not sure how far back in the day I made the mistake and did I mention that the file is so large now that the undo function locks the video editor up almost every time? There's only one option left: tentatively keep hitting undo and just pray this doesn't lock the editor up otherwise ALL GONE, and just pray the buffer remembers far back enough to restore the sequence I deleted otherwise ALL GONE. There I sat for thirty minutes hitting ctrl-z as gently as I could, sweat dripping from my furrowed brow, even the mice who live in the walls of my apartment coming out to watch and bite their fingernails or claws or whatever it is mice have, their cheese untouched, their traps empty.... Anyway everything was fine even if I almost soiled myself - the undo function worked and I briefly felt good about living again for the first time in ten years. I am an idiot. Please don't be an idiot like me - back stuff up, I beg ye. Music used ► Queen of the Night - Patrick Hawes, Grace Davidson Swan Lake, Act II - Tchaikovsky - https://youtu.be/do6Ki6kMq_o?si=hBiUWONTRH_8lkiU Lavender Fields - Aysedeniz Gokcin Dawn of Innocence - Nathalie Bonin And of course here's your mystery link: https://youtu.be/EITdCWYTn2I?si=JIodXOU4_5bzbLOP

A piano version you might enjoy instead: https://youtu.be/MnYyBfeK0oA Unnecessary bonus trivia ► This one started in 2021 when I was listening to some top-tier Hungarian-Romani folk music (Csilavtu by Kalyi Jag, if you're curious). It clearly sounded like two people arguing about truth on the bridge of a starship, which seemed as though it might go into a story somewhere. I tried quite hard to buy the rights to the music because no other music would do for the story. Well that didn't go so well and I lost a bunch of sleep and emails over it, but thought the story might work without it anyway. No problem, I'll be done with the whole project in a month tops, I thought. That was over a year ago now. My hair is greyer since, and I never got the rights to the track, and I'm beginning to lose the will to live, but you can't deny two people were getting kinda passive-aggressive on the bridge of a starship. And isn't that really what life is all about? Thank you for watching, as always. You're ever so kind. (Oh yeah, AND HERE'S YOUR GODDAMN MYSTERY LINK, OKAY? https://youtu.be/-Kljmrtp9L8)

It was awful. The initial idea had been to try explaining what a gap there currently is between general relativity and quantum mechanics. What came out instead was the video equivalent of soft-serve vanilla ice cream garnished with ostrich droppings. But the thing has been haunting me ever since and I wanted to give it another go. 8 Million Species of Aliens

8 Million Species of Aliens

I think therefore I bork. *the adverb mention is just straight up wrong. "F-ing unhinged" is still an adjective. Excuse my silliness. (More things to waste your time with below.) The grammatical variations of a certain f-word were of course yoinked from George Carlin's bit which did it better: (Seems to be George Carlin originally anyway.) https://youtu.be/xZkb4TPI-Lo The mention about toile and toilet was put extremely badly. "Toilette" was the diminutive, not the other way around as poor wording implied. There's some controversy surrounding how efficient a bee's waggle dance actually is. I'm no apiologist (no seriously, that's a specialist of bee science), but the problem doesn't seem to bee (heh) with the waggle dance. Rather, the dispute is over how much of a difference it makes to bees watching the dance itself. For 1000x more depth than this video went into: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3153927/ One of the opening slides shows the greatest copypasta known to humankind: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/navy-seal-copypasta The "If this little lion could speak..." line is lifted almost directly from Wittgenstein. The original line is "If a lion could speak, we could not understand him." As in: even *with* complex language, alien minds might still be incomprehensible. Quite a lot of the silliness with English was taken from John McWhorter's brilliant Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue: The Untold History of English. It's a great read: https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/3143472-our-magnificent-bastard-tongue This one was largely inspired by a friend trying to convince me that animals don't just have a 'smaller' form of human intelligence, they've gone off in other evolutionary directions and we should probably count those different types of smarts as valid too. So, thank you to HF for that. The thumbnail is an axolotl, and just in case you haven't come across them yet they're quite fantastic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axolotl The Cephalotes Varians ant photo has been used with a commercial license courtesy of smugmug.com Bonus fun: I spent about a month trying to come up with the title for this one. "The Tower of Babble" seemed like a fun comedy twist on the biblical story. I looked it up. No one seemed to have used it already. Well, I felt terribly proud of that and walked with a spring in my step for several weeks. Just before uploading today I thought I'd check again. I hadn't noticed Google was kindly correcting the typo for me. Of course The Tower of Babble is already a thing; books, films, podcasts. Almost threw myself out the window. The Rememberer

I’m sure we’ve all been through that phase when you just want to make 30 minute thinly veiled monochrome allegories about your fear of ageing. I do t-shirts now. T-shirts are cool. ► https://teespring.com/stores/exurb1a Bonus trivia: This video is not finished. But if I don’t let it go now, I will be. The beginning fell into my head several months ago. I assumed it would take a few weeks to make, at most. Little did I know it would sprout multiple heads and take over my life for two and a half months. If you didn’t enjoy watching it, take comfort that I didn’t enjoy making it. (Just jokez. Thanks for watching my stuff as always, and hope you’re well :) ) Bonus bonus trivia: The original title was supposed to be "The Nine Isles of Neverdead", but google told me Neverdead is already a thing; apparently a video game about demons and stuff. I'm sorry this one took a while. I'm especially sorry to folks on Patreon. I think I told you it would only be another week about three weeks ago? Apologies, but I didn't want to put the thing out half baked. A very, very big thank you to a friend who wishes to go by the name Jimmy Cakeshoes. When the editing was almost done, it was impossible to render the video because my PC kept having little meltdowns and locking up. One genius technical fix later from Dr. Cakeshoes and all was well. The Moon is a Door to Forever

So let’s go back, eh? Proclaim your hate for the channel with t-shirts ► https://teespring.com/stores/exurb1a More spacey stuff and some recommendations below ► Enormous liberties have been taken with this one; some of the footage isn’t from Apollo 11 (the mission we chat about here), but subsequent missions to the moon. Footage was really quite difficult to find, so hopefully you can forgive me playing a little visually loose with the truth. Also the Soviet space program was barely even mentioned in the video. I’ve often thought it’s a bit sad that the Soviet Union got the first satellite into space, the first doggos (let’s not discuss it), the first man, the first woman, the first probe to the moon, the first spacewalk, and the first robot on another celestial body – yet the winner’s medal generally goes to the US for reaching the moon, and doing it so brilliantly. (Which they did, and which it was.) Not in any way meaning to discredit the US here, I’d just like to urge you to spare a thought for those other clever men and women a continent away who were – at the very same time – also taking marvellous and brave strides into space. I’ve had quite a fascination with the Apollo program over the years, and space in general. If it’s something you’re interested in too, here’s the stuff I really, really enjoyed reading and watching. (No one’s paying me for this, I just dig them. The audiobook versions are great too.) I wasn’t sure what dabbing is. She assured me that since an astronaut’s doing it, it’s fine. The original line was, “If they give you ruled paper, write the other way.” As far as I can tell it’s Juan Ramón Jiménez’s. I am also now painfully aware I've written a half as '2/1'. Sorry maths. Please note that this wasn’t intended to be a diatribe against critics or experts. They obviously play an important role. It was more directed at the recreational cynicism one comes across in daily life from time to time, generally pointed at young artists. I have had the privilege to meet plenty of people 1000x more talented than me, who are simultaneously doubting their abilities because of some stupid comment made by an unpleasant teacher or jaded family member. If you are that artist, I really just wanted to say: You’re in good company; the Greats doubted themselves too. Don’t let the bastards get you down and I hope you make all manner of interesting and fantastic things. The music is the 3rd movement of Big Baus Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D Major: https://youtu.be/Ev45Knhdlp8 I like that piece lots. I hope you do too. Again, all the very best of luck in your projects.

I’ve mentioned before I’m more or less blind in one eye and this is almost definitely a result of a mutation in my family line. And you know, given the option, I’m not sure if I’d have it removed. Or, I’d need to give it a very, very long think. There are plenty of lovely and bizarre anomalies specific to individuals, and it’s not for me to say – or even speculate really – where the line should be drawn when it comes to one day potentially making alterations to our descendants. I’m not a public educator, philosopher, scientist, or policy maker. Just an idiot with a USB microphone. I’m not the person to talk about this stuff. So I hope you’ll forgive my glossing over of it.

Bear and Goose at the End of Everything

*Yes, you're quite right, water isn't wet. This one was inspired by rereading Ursula K. Le Guin recently. She passed away last Monday, January 22. There’s no doubt she was one of the greats, and lots of us grew up adoring her work and still do, myself included. If you aren’t familiar with her books, this is a great place to start: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13651.The_Dispossessed. Thank you for the stories, Ms Le Guin. You’ll be much missed indeed. Goose gives a little nod to Hunter S. Thompson, a line from his suicide note. The whole thing is quite haunting. He's also much missed. https://www.stereogum.com/1799/hunter_s_thompsons_suicide_note/news/ I also heavily stole bits from The Last Question, by Isaac Asimov. It's a great story. The Brain Zoo - Basics of Meditation

Another lesser-known member of the brain zoo is Procrastination Salmon. He rarely makes an appearance. Twitter ► https://twitter.com/Exurb1a New book ► https://tinyurl.com/hf928gk Discuss passive-aggressively ► https://www.reddit.com/r/Exurb1a/ There is absolutely no reason to associate meditation with religion these days, not if you’re atheist or agnostic. It’s totally possible to be secular and still consider it just as valuable. Which it is. There’s also no reason to associate it with claims about superpowers, enlightenment, seeing other dimensions, or suddenly being able to do triple backflips with a jam sandwich on your head. The last one would be cool though. As mentioned in the video, it’s essentially the art of gaining conscious control of the rest of you mind, just by observation. Lots of folk have explained it better than I ever could: A short primer by a Buddhist monk (previously a scientist) about the point of meditation: https://youtu.be/lRk6Yvb-Q28 Another talk by the same charming gentleman on happiness: https://youtu.be/iZwnXj0Ck1k Dan Harris bigging up meditation: https://youtu.be/FAcTIrA2Qhk Alan Watts brilliantly going into how he meditates: https://youtu.be/EgHCwsQ1MqI A rather interesting talk on the physical effects of meditation on the brain by a neuroscientist: https://youtu.be/m8rRzTtP7Tc A much better explanation than mine about why the self is weird by Sam Harris: https://youtu.be/fajfkO_X0l0 Big Dawg Harris explaining mindfulness: https://youtu.be/Iwac6Uk-zyk Another excellent video from him on the subject: https://youtu.be/t8U5J_LV3UI A short but brilliant book outlining how to meditate, that isn’t particularly preachy: https://www.amazon.com/Art-Meditation-Matthieu-Ricard/dp/0857892746 Another fantastic book about a British nun who went into a silent retreat in a cave for 12 years. She’s surprisingly sane: https://www.amazon.com/Cave-Snow-Western-Womans-Enlightenment/dp/0747543895 Also, sort of half-related, I rather enjoyed this. Britain Leaving the EU - For and Against

A NOTE OF APOLOGY: Several days ago I uploaded a version of this video which somewhat implied (courtesy of Talisker whisky, and being a general idiot) that Southern Ireland (the Republic of Ireland, if you prefer) is part of the UK. I've fixed it up since then, but the patriotic damage is done. Massive apologies to the Irish among you who saw that at the time. You probably felt how I would if someone tried to make out Stephen Fry is Australian. It was quite embarrassing, and to make up for it I'd gladly buy you all a pint. One at a time though please. Two at a push. A FURTHER NOTE OF APOLOGY: There are also some inaccuracies with how Germany is depicted on the European map. All I can say is: Entschuldigung on behalf of myself and Photoshop; no offence meant whatsoever.
