I carried on from here to Morocco by boat, but more on that later :) It was mostly developed during the time of the Nasrid Dynasty, until the Spanish reconquests/inquisition took this area back over for Catholicism. But what remains is this amazing palace and the whole Moorish quarter of Granada which was an absolute joy to visit. I also got here on El Pato, the 300+km/h train through the Spanish mountains, which was quite an experience! ✨ subscribe ✨ & join the patreon for more https://www.patreon.com/tomthornton I just got back from my one-week solo trip around Tunisia, which I planned and organised completely by myself. It was a beautiful and surprising country and I absolutely loved my time there, but I also did learn a few things that I wish I knew before going, so I've compiled all of that wisdom in to the ultimate Tunisia travel guide for you, so that you can go and have the perfect vacation there from day one :) I also feel really grateful to the people I met there and the kindness they showed me, so I want to do my part for helping to boost the tourism industry there. There's kind of a lack of good recent Tunisia information online, and I wanted to change that. Tunisia is full of a wealth of historical and cultural sites, old markets and medinas, fortresses, roman ruins, and of course, sites in the southern part in the sahara, like tataouine, where star wars was filmed ;) And all of that adds up to a place that absolutely suits budget-friendly solo travel. where I get good-value travel e-sims (absolute lifesaver): https://airalo.tp.st/0a7CSKiV I went to Tunis, Sidi Bou Said, Carthage, Sfax, Sousse and El Jem while in Tunisia. The Dogu Express is an 800-mile train journey all the way across Turkey, from Ankara out to Kars. On the 800-mile route, you pass some of Turkey's best mountains and valleys, and get to enjoy it with freshly-cooked food and coffee. And all that for 400 Lira (roughly $12). But since videos of it travelling through the snow went viral on Turkish Instagram, it's impossible to get a ticket for the sleeper beds, and sitting up for 30 hours on a Turkish train is no picnic. (even if it was somewhere outside of home where I brought and ate food and therefore probably qualifies as a picnic) I was on the normal Doğu Ekspresi, after doing this I would probably also recommend doing the same. It's so much cheaper and if you want to visit Erzurum, I would just go and do that at your own pace, rather than on on excursion. Read the seat61 Turkey page for all the advice you need. I was working with Amber Travel who I can 100% recommend, they consistently tried to get me on one of the sleeper beds by checking for cancellations for me until the very last second, and also helped me get a ticket for another journey I did in Turkey and provided a lot of good advice. insta: https://www.instagram.com/tomth0rnton/ sign up to epidemic sound and boost my referrals: https://share.epidemicsound.com/nu1tb0 camera: https://amzn.to/3bGGrb2

It's a slightly surreal experience being in a private capsule on a train: very cool that somebody invented it, but far from perfect right now. By reviewing ÖBB's new Minicabin on this 14-hour journey between Hamburg and Austria, I'm covering what the new private version of the couchette is like, what food and facilities are included, and what I did and didn't like about the experience, as well as talking about the ticket prices. We also have the story of my awful experience with Greyhound a few years ago! I've been all over Europe with Flixbus, and generally really like the company, although the buses are sometimes really noisy. So will I like Flixbus USA just as much? Or will it be even worse than Greyhound? Amtrak fares to travel on this route by train are significantly higher than the £30 I paid for this. So it's probably a really nice thing to have competition. And any Europeans who already have, and are used to using, the Flixbus app will find the ticketing process very easy. So overall I'd say that my review of Flixbus in America is a pretty good one. This idea for a trip had been on my mind for a while, but doing it was way better than I ever expected. I had always wanted to see some of the amazing lighthouses in New England, and make another Amtrak video. So last autumn when I had the opportunity to go to the USA, I spent days scouring the internet for boat tours and cool towns to stop in, and came up with this. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed doing it. Starting from a motel room in Brunswick Maine, the very far northeastern end of the train lines in the USA, I ride Amtrak's Downeaster service down to Boston, stopping overnight in Portland, Maine and Portsmouth, New Hampshire along the way. And then further with Amtrak's Northeast Regional down to Providence / Newport Rhode Island, and then New York City. I was so lucky to end up doing this north-to-south, because I went to Portland Head Light first and discovered the Lighthouse Passport from the United States Lighthouse Society. Filling this passport with lighthouse stamps is now going to be my full-time hobby/obsession every time I'm in the USA... Riding around on Amtrak was again good fun, I met a lot of Americans who had literally never ridden a train before and couldn't comprehend what I was doing, but to me it was fun. The service is better than some people give it credit for! I also discovered another USA obsession of mine, sweetgreen's shroomami with light ginger-miso dressing, wow... I might have to book another flight ticket just to eat that again. If you have any questions about planning your own solo rail travel in the USA trip, hit me up in the comments or on instagram :) I hope that you're doing well and staying safe. insta: https://www.instagram.com/tomth0rnton/ #travel #usa #amtrak Music from Epidemic Sound, feel free to sign up using my referral link if you liked it :) https://share.epidemicsound.com/nu1tb0 Camera: https://amzn.to/3bGGrb2 Microphone I use at home: https://amzn.to/2MtTGTF My 40L travel backpack: https://amzn.to/3b3Ywkh SSD I edit from: https://amzn.to/3syP7He 0:00 Brunswick, Maine by train 1:20 Train to Portland, Maine 2:19 Portland, Maine 3:28 Lighthouse boat tour Portland, Maine 4:19 Portland Head Light boat tour 5:50 Portland Head Light Park 7:12 Lighthouse passport 8:30 Amtrak Downeaster to New Hampshire 9:35 Portsmouth New Hampshire 12:23 Lighthouse boat tour Portsmouth New Hampshire 15:48 Amtrak Downeaster in autumn 18:16 Salem Massachusetts in October 20:10 Plymouth Rock from Boston 21:54 Train from Boston to Providence 23:40 Lighthoust boat tour Newport Rhode Island 28:07 Amtrak Providence to New York

We used our shared love of all things Americana to invent 5 challenges for us to complete in 5 different states in 1 day. All the classic moments from American movies, TV and music that we were influenced by while growing up very, very far away from the USA went in to creating this video, and I hope that shows! We ride between Boston, Massachusetts, Providence, Rhode Island, New Haven, Connecticut, New York City, New York, and Somewhere I can't even remember, New Jersey For sure, given that Boston to DC only takes around 8 hours by train and crosses more state lines than that, it might sound simple at first, but we're testing ourselves at not just *passing through* 5 states in one day, but actually getting off the train there and seeing something. The first 100 people to use code TOMTHORNTON at the link below will get 60% off of Incogni: https://incogni.com/tomthornton A weekend where I challenge myself to quit scrolling on the internet and stay alive while camping out in the woods, in the Saxon Switzerland National Park, between Dresden and the Czech border :) Germans seem to love camping, but as far as I can tell, it's almost always the big, loud, family version, with swimming pools and car parks... but I wanted to camp out in the wilderness as part of a longer hike out in nature. Can you wild camp in Germany? The answer, pretty much everywhere, is no - BUT... there are a few spots that let you. I was in the Forststeig Elbsandstein, basically a piece of the Sächsische Schweiz. They have certain Biwakplätze and Trekkinghütten where you can camp out. Having a hut right next to you is not exactly *wild* wild, but definitely the closest thing available so that you can Wildcampen in Deutschland, imo. And it's nice to know that there's shelter/first aid/etc there, in an emergency. subscribe & join the patreon for more https://www.patreon.com/tomthornton *this is not a hiking guide* - I did a modified version of stages 4 and 5 here: https://www.komoot.com/collection/1284520/der-wilde-forststeig-in-sieben-etappen-durch-das-elbsandsteingebirge (modified to start from the bus stop in Rosenthal-Bielatal and end at the bus stop in Bielatal - I'm actually pretty sure I had the same driver drop me off on Saturday and pick me up on Sunday!) but you should always do your own research on safety, navigation, permits, weather forecasts, forest fires, avalanches, gear, etc, etc. Sequences in this video are drastically shortened (24h of hiking/camping in a 10-minute video), and shown out of order. Bus travel I checked on the DB Navigator app... but best to double-check with the local services: https://www.rvsoe.de/fahrplan/fahrplaene/fahrradbus More information on staying overnight in this particular place: https://www.forststeig.sachsen.de/walduebernachtung.html Trekkingtickets cost 10 euros per person per night (at least, they did when I did it). I bought mine at Pirna, they don't actually sell them at the bus station anymore, but at a nearby office. But there is a list online of where you can buy them. I also achieved the feat of overnight wild camping with a 30L backpack! I love my new Salomon Trailblazer 30L, I will probably make a short about how good it is, but I felt fine carrying it all weekend, with my tent, food, water etc on my back. I've talked about my home island a lot, but never made a proper video from it. The fact that we rely on ferries to get home is one of the most prominent / annoying features of island life, so I turned it in to a challenge :) Can I ride every single Isle of Wight ferry in 24 hours, while showing you some of my favourite spots on my home island at the same time? England travel is not so much something we've done a lot on this channel, I think I only have a couple of UK travel vlogs still up. But if you like this one, I have plenty more ideas! insta: https://www.instagram.com/tomth0rnton/ subscribe & join the patreon for more https://www.patreon.com/tomthornton I took a lot of time to design a route that included the Portsmouth, Southampton and Lymington ferries, allowed a trip on the Floating Bridge, and a walk down Ryde Pier (there should be a train, but it's currently out of service!). But my main criteria was to end with the Hovercraft from Southsea to Ryde, truly a unique worldwide experience! Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, I'll leave up to you. The ride from Romania to Austria should have been a nice and relaxing one, especially since I had a first-class private compartment with a private bathroom and shower. However, as you'll see by what happens after I get a knock at my room's door from the train guard, it was anything but relaxing... This is my second video of a journey either ending or beginning in Romania and I have to say, I've complained a lot about the cross-border transport, but the actual Romania part itself has always been wonderful and I would love to go back and have a proper Romania travel adventure soon :) I hope that you're doing well and staying safe. insta: https://www.instagram.com/tomth0rnton/ Music from Epidemic Sound, feel free to sign up using my referral link if you liked it :) https://share.epidemicsound.com/nu1tb0 Camera: https://amzn.to/3bGGrb2 Microphone I use at home: https://amzn.to/2MtTGTF My 40L travel backpack: https://amzn.to/3b3Ywkh SSD I edit from: https://amzn.to/3syP7He

(really, you don't have to. please don't put yourself through it!) I went in to it expecting it to be an extreme boredom test, but it actually ended up being way worse than that, for multiple other reasons. This was shot just at the start of summer, and thankfully we had decent weather for the run through Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. The Romanian part of the coach journey, especially, was really beautiful and I can't wait to actually travel and see some parts of this country! The longest €49 journey. Unbelievable. subscribe & join the patreon for more :) https://www.patreon.com/TomThornton Here it is, the (maybe?) longest journey you can do with the Deutschlandticket. I feel like I'm definitely the first person to have done this, aka the only person weird enough. Since the news of the Deutschlandticket, (and tbh, since the summer of the €9 ticket that I didn't vlog anything with), I had been planning to be the first person to do this particular border-to-border journey. I attempted to travel from Basel, Switzerland to Świnoujście, Poland, in 24 hours, in my attempt to cross the whole of Germany with the Deutschlandticket - so only using Regional trains, buses, trams, U-Bahn, S-Bahn, etc. No ICE or ICE or EC. A journey of almost 24 hours, with 8 changes, transferring in Freiburg, Mannheim, Frankfurt, Kassel, Halle, Wittenberg, Züssow and Ahlbeck Grenze. Ahlbeck / Heringsdorf / Świnoujście is kind of a cool place, where you can see the border monument and cross over to Poland, shopping in Polish stores etc, cycle around the promenade and the beach and go to the piers etc. Pretty fun. The Deutschlandticket can definitely be a good addition to your budget travel in Europe this summer, if used properly! The Nebelhornbahn in Oberstdorf takes you to the highest peak in the entire Allgäu region. (That region and this mountain are obviously very well-known in Germany, judging by the number of people I saw there... but I think most foreigners like me have never heard of it!). I was travelling to the Bavarian Alps in winter to see some snow, and this video shows how high you had to go this winter before seeing any :( I would definitely recommend a trip to the Nebelhornbahn, this is a mountain that you can easily go and visit with the Deutschlandticket / 49 Euro Ticket, since the trains from Munich are all Regional Expresses. I did the same before the Deutschlandticket existed (I had to buy the BavariaTicket though). I'm glad that I made this Germany travel experience in winter, but I would also definitely go in the summer and enjoy the greenery with some cool refreshments :) I hope that you're doing well and staying safe. insta: https://www.instagram.com/tomth0rnton/ Camera: https://amzn.to/3bGGrb2 Microphone I use at home: https://amzn.to/2MtTGTF My 40L travel backpack: https://amzn.to/3b3Ywkh SSD I edit from: https://amzn.to/3syP7He

I hiked the trail from Mittenwald through the Leutasch Gorge, then back over the border via a really tough climb up to Berggasthaus Ederkanzel, round to Ferchensee and Lautersee, then back to Mittenwald, to catch the train back to Munich. Filmed in January 2023. The bridges over the Leutaschklamm Geisterklamm had me a little nervous, as you can tell ;) Definitely worth looking in to the new Deutschland ticket if you want to do this route :) I did it with the Bayern ticket as the Deutschland ticket wasn't out yet. *This is not a hiking guide* - a lot of the shots in this video are out of order and I took different turns just to get shots and then came back. There was also an unusually low (zero) amount of snow for January. Do your own research on the weather forecast, avalanche warnings, trail closures, and what equipment you need before you do this trail. I had my good spikes from last year's Tegernsee video on me, but didn't need them. You can definitely find similar routes on the Komoot app. Mittenwald is a really cute town in its own right, and definitely provides some of the best day hikes from Munich. This path took me through both Germany and Austria, in the German Alps and the Austrian Alps, and I even found a few spots to get drone footage of the alps :) perfect. insta: https://www.instagram.com/tomth0rnton/ Camera: https://amzn.to/3bGGrb2 Microphone I use at home: https://amzn.to/2MtTGTF My 40L travel backpack: https://amzn.to/3b3Ywkh SSD I edit from: https://amzn.to/3syP7He

The Saxon Switzerland National Park is a famous tourist destination in Germany, but I didn't actually know it existed until I moved to East Germany and people kept talking about it. I took a weekend trip from Leipzig to Dresden & the Sächsische Schweiz in autumn to do the hikes to Bastei Bridge and Kuhstall. German trains can be pretty cheap, especially if you travel in a group. DB day passes for within particular states: https://www.bahn.com/en/offers/regional/regional-day-tickets I took the RB to Dresden, Rathen & Bad Schandau Nationalparkbahnhof and also used the Leipzig S-Bahn to get home. Bastei Brücke & Kuhstall hikes I followed on the Komoot app. They are both great day hikes in East Germany and possible as a day trip from Leipzig or Dresden. I highly recommend that you, too, grab your bestie and go see cool new places, drink cheap beers and laugh at the Alps (or Dolomites, I don't even know) through a train window. We had the immense privilege of going on a digital nomad journey through Central Europe: 6 countries (Slovenia didn't make the video...) in 3 weeks, without taking a day off work. Berlin to Prague to Vienna to Bratislava to Venice to Trento. Germany, Czechia, Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia and, of course, Italy. Che La Luna! We used a combination of FlixBus, Deutsche Bahn and TrenItalia to travel between cities in Europe, and found apartments where we could remotely work while travelling. And also the boat between Vienna and Bratislava, way more expensive than the alternative but we are island folk after all. A weekend in the Bavarian Alps this winter :) I took the ICE from Leipzig to Munich, and used the Bavaria regional day ticket to travel by train to a few cute snowy spots. Did some hiking in the snow, met some nice people, ate some peanut butter and flew the drone. And, of course, had some Glühwein in a Bavarian lodge. Places visited in this video: Spitzingsee (via bus from Schliersee) Tegernsee (trail https://www.komoot.com/smarttour/958939) Definitely recommend decent micro spikes if going in Jan/Feb like I did! The way to make it so cheap to travel from Munich to anywhere is the Bavaria Pass with DB. I do have more travel vlogs planned for this year, so follow me on Instagram to keep up to date with where I am! After my 50-minute travel vlog, I just couldn't resist another labour of love talking about my month travelling around the Norwegian Arctic. Last autumn, I went on a trip from Germany to see the northern lights in Tromsø, Norway by train, boat and bus. I spent time in Hamburg, Aalborg, Oslo, Bergen, Svolvaer, Lofoten Islands and Tromsø. And a trip like that definitely deserves more analysis than I could squeeze in to the original travel vlog. I have a lot of thoughts about the trip, how I felt while making the video, and how it was received! Full 2 hours of commentary, bonus footage and timeline review: https://youtu.be/IbkTMnmXc3Y The only thing I don't touch is the budget, but the fact that I haven't even added up what I spent in Norway because I don't think it would be healthy for me to know it probably tells you everything :') I would say Norway is a little less shoestring-able than other countries, I did cook for myself every day but in general the price is the price. If I had to guess, given what I spent on Airbnbs and hotels and the boat trip and the stupid amount I spent in Norwegian supermarkets, don't start daydreaming about doing this trip unless you have 3000 EUR to spend, then you can start looking in to it and calculating everything 😂 The highlights of this trip were definitely the incredible Hurtigruten fjords cruise, seeing the northern lights in Tromsø and the train from Oslo to Bergen. It's the third and final summer 2021 Switzerland video! However you mess up your own plans while travelling, you can usually fix it and have a good laugh about it later. Sometimes you'll even find something you weren't looking for! This is what I spent the rest of my interrail pass from Switzerland 1 on, making this another cheap weekend. You can use the Interrail app to plan a journey that goes over the same rails as the Bernina Express, so you get to see the Landwasser Viaduct, Miralago, the Brusio Spiral, the Bernina Pass and hour after hour of amazing views. This is definitely something that I want to repeat in the winter! Hopefully you enjoyed all 3 videos and found some ways to travel Switzerland on a budget. Here is Switzerland 1 aka my £100 weekend in Switzerland. I was really happy to be able to do my first proper travelling in so long: bringing you a Switzerland on a budget travel film. I took full advantage of living in Konstanz and had a weekend travelling along the route of the famous Glacier Express without breaking the bank. You can donate to the German flood relief effort here: https://www.drk.de/en/ I donated €50 and was hoping that if everyone who can donate 5 bucks does so, then all together we could be supporting the relief effort with a total of €100, which will go a long way for a flood survivor. You can donate at the link above with PayPal in USD or GBP or whatever currency :) there are also other organisations helping that you can support, e.g. https://www.aktion-deutschland-hilft.de/en/ (ah shame I didn't sync the final audio right! thanks for understanding!) In this video, I used an interrail pass and I would really recommend doing the same in certain countries (e.g. die Schweiz). I hope that you like cow bells, because I was able to license 21 minutes of cowbell music as the soundtrack for this video. Last weekend I went travelling for the first time since *you know what* started and I couldn't be happier. I rode the trains around Switzerland on as tight a budget as possible, and I shot a whole travel vlog about that that I think you're really going to like. ... also, a lot has happened since we last spoke, including that thing where I kinda met KARA AND NATE AND I'M STILL SHOOK. I will spend ages editing the Switzerland video, and most of those stories don't belong in it, so here is a special treat: I took some time at the weekend to sit on a hill somewhere in Andermatt and share some things that have been on my mind. Hi friends, today I'm excited to hit you with a double-length Germany vlog! Where I tell you about what I'm most excited for this summer, take you with me on 2 really gorgeous walks in the Bodensee area, and talk about YouTube, insecurities and life. I don't know where all the deep conversation came from, but hopefully you liked it and hopefully 1 person listening to this felt a little more confident from hearing it :) Featuring hikes around Markelfingen, Mindelsee, Sipplingen and Ludwigshafen am Bodensee. and yes I missed out a joke in the shorts part, saying I look awkward enough in any clothes anyway! Just pre-empting you here by putting it myself :) I hope that you're doing well and staying safe. Wow I was so excited to go here! Reichenau is a small island near Konstanz that we had seen across Bodensee a thousand times. With the good weather last weekend, I decided to walk over and see it up close. It was really beautiful, and I'm glad I went and took you along with me. You should definitely visit Reichenau if you're in the Konstanz / Bodensee area, especially if you like cute little German towns and local vegetables! This would make a really good day trip from Konstanz, either walking or cycling, I saw lots of families cycling over on a Saturday in the sun :) It's also good to see people going in to cafes etc, I walked past a few different places that were doing food and drinks and even some doing BBQs. This is our first travel vlog from the town where we (used to!) live in Germany. We've moved closer to the city now, and we're looking forward to making videos there too. I hope that you're doing well and staying safe. We'll see you in another video soon! We've been busy moving out of Allensbach so I'm looking forward to finding a place to shoot videos in our new flat. I've always said that I'll be making videos about hiking weekends in Switzerland asap, but even right now we are so blessed to live in such a beautiful area., it's not wasted on us! :) Thanks for watching! I asked you on Instagram, "do you think we'll be able to travel this year?" and I really enjoyed reading your responses. As usual my brain ran away with me and I couldn't give my answer on Insta stories, so here I am, giving you my full answer do the question "will we be able to travel in 2021?", with way more information than you ever asked for. This depends on what kind of travel you were used to doing. Maybe domestic travel in 2021 will be possible, maybe for US/Canada and Europe/Europe we'll have some international travel in 2021 too. 2021 travel could turn out to be a huge market, and I really hope that's the case, I hope everything works out, I just thought I'd lay all my reservations and dodgy predictions on you ahead of time. I hope you're doing well and staying safe. I'll see in my next video, which is all about things you can do now to be able to travel more in 2022. Hi everybody, how are you doing? Today I'm exercising the privilege I have to see cool places and take you all with me... in a much smaller way than usual! Hey, we're all in this together, unable to go anywhere (apart from you, my 3 fans in NZ). All we can do is get out and stretch the legs and try to stay positive. So today I'm showing you a forest in southern Germany in the snow that we had in Jan/Feb this year. This is kind of a silent hiking film but a silent stroll around the forest film. I'd love to use local places like this to build up some fitness for making travel hiking videos in the future. So until next time, I hope that you enjoyed a walk in nature in Germany in the winter with me today, and I do have some more planned that I can share with you. of course, Kraig Adams inspired ;) Follow me on insta https://www.instagram.com/tomth0rnton/ Camera: https://amzn.to/3bGGrb2 (this was actually shot with https://amzn.to/3sv4Vus my first time using it, and I liked it!) How to travel from New York to LA by train for cheaper than you probably thought. I hope you're all doing well, and thank you so much for the unbelievable response to my videos this last couple of weeks - I'm so grateful. It's been such an exciting time reading all your comments and I'm excited to make more videos for you. If you liked that video, and you want to know how much you'd need to save to do the same, we ended up spending $45-ish/day each, or about $1640 each in total. The trip was a huge privilege and we had to save for a while to afford it, so I know it's not cheap, but I'm very pleased with it considering how much we saw. I know that some people can't imagine going on vacation and cooking. I'm not trying to disrespect that, I just have to choose either seeing places that I want to see, or eating in restaurants - if I had $35 dinner every night on vacation, it would be a great time, but a much shorter trip! This video breaks down how much we spent when backpacking the USA on a budget, travelling cross-country from New York to LA with Amtrak on a tight budget. We were able to save money by cooking for ourselves, avoiding buying tickets for attractions etc, and staying in nice but cheap Airbnbs, hostel beds and by housesitting. If you’re new to Airbnb, you can use my referral link for up to $50 off your first booking, and it gives us some credit too: https://abnb.me/e/da3GgNOrJdb thanks! We love housesitting while travelling, and finding hosts that accepted us was the first part of our plan to visit the USA. Everything followed from there, and suddenly the big journey you saw in the main video was possible! I hope you find my advice for backpacking the USA on the train on a budget useful. Can you sleep in the coach seats on the California Zephyr / Coast Starlight / Capitol Limited? What should I pack for an Amtrak coach seats trip? What are the coach seats like on Amtrak and how far can you lean back? Would you recommend riding Amtrak in coach? (Our trip was in January 2020, before all... you know) As a thank you to all of you who watched my video of travelling across the USA in coach and left such nice comments, here is everything I learned that could be useful to people who are thinking of doing the same trip when it's safe again. Hello and thank you to all of you who subscribed after watching that video! I know I am just a stupid British tourist, so my new American friends will probably be able to offer better advice. But these are things I wanted to know before going, and I made sure to get enough clips to help out other people. If you’re new to Airbnb, you can use my referral link for up to $50 off your first booking, and it gives us some credit too: https://abnb.me/e/da3GgNOrJdb thanks! This is my advice for riding the California Zephyr in coach seats, the Coast Starlight in coach seats, and the Capitol Limited in coach seats. A lot of my clips are from the ride through the rockies because the scenery is the best, but I honestly enjoyed seeing the snowy towns of Ohio on the Capitol Limited too. I'll answer your questions about things to pack for the California Zephyr, what to eat on the California zephyr, booking California Zephyr tickets and booking California Zephyr coach tickets. Hi everybody, I hope you're doing well this Christmas. This video was shot in 2019. This is a trip from London to Brussels and Cologne in December 2019. We rode FlixBus from London to Brussels for about £15 and then on to Cologne for another £8. It's an amazing way to travel Europe on a budget without flying. Cologne Christmas markets are definitely worth checking out, if we can get back to normal life. Thank you to everyone who watched my USA video, especially all the people who left nice comments and are now subscribed watching this video! I hope this year's Christmas isn't too bad for you. How I ended up on the shortest South America backpacking trip ever (you already know the answer). 🏝️ I read 2 (two!) books about the Galapagos Islands in February 🚌 I read probably 100 people's "South America by bus" blog posts 📚 I read the Culture Trip page for half the cities on that continent 🇨🇴 And I envied my friends who had been enjoying it for so long already 😂 I thought about the caption for my future Instagrams of Machu Picchu and me with a sea lion... And then the time came to go to Bogota and actually do it, and I was in the UK within 8 days 🙃 I know 2020 has messed people up in way worse ways than this, but I still wanted to share my version of the "coming home from travelling because of the pandemic" story. It's not as good as Eva Zu Beck's story of coming home from Socotra, but I did shoot some footage in Bogota that I wanted to share, and it is still a good memory of a fun week even though it didn't turn in to anything more. We were staying in Granada Hostel in Bogota's La Candelaria. It's an amazing hostel and as you can see we had a good time buying bottles of ron off them and meeting people. Monserrate seemed like a cool opportunity for a hike, but we went one day and the path was closed, and then the next time we were scared of it raining, so we took the Monseratte Furnicular. It's an amazing view up there and even though I have bad lungs I couldn't tell it was so high up! Thank you for watching, I hope you're doing well and I'll see you in a Germany video soon x Follow me on insta https://www.instagram.com/tomth0rnton/ Camera: https://amzn.to/3bGGrb2 Microphone I use at home: https://amzn.to/2MtTGTF My 40L travel backpack: https://amzn.to/3b3Ywkh Hard drive I use for footage: https://amzn.to/3syP7He

We stayed in a charming, traditional Cuban casa built by our host's Grandfather. Casa Particulares are by far the best way to experience Cuba as it becomes more open to tourism. https://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Casa-Novo-Guest-House/Havana/269299 Our host taught us a lot about the local area, both in terms of history and what scams we should avoid! Just taking in the sights and sounds of the old town of Havana took us a whole week. I hope this video shows how vibrant and lively that city is. I would love to go back and road trip to Trinidad! A Mexico Yucatan Peninsula on a budget backpacking video featuring no talking but lots of Merida, Izamal, Valladolid, Ek Balam, Chichen Itza, collectivos, cerveza, scraggly dogs, Cuba libre and 2nd-class Oriente buses. I don't know if I preferred the colourful colonial pueblos, the local cantinas, or the historic Mayan ruins while in Yucatan, but if you get a chance to experience any of them, definitely go for it. I'm so glad we travelled around the Yucatan peninsula. It's really beautiful, fun and not that expensive. I actually got better at speaking Spanish in 10 days here than in any other Spanish-speaking country I've been to, the locals are super patient listeners and really clear speakers. I've forgotten it all now, but all the collectivo and taxi rides shown in this video I was able to haggle a little bit. I went for a different style in this video, slow and calm, partly because I wanted to and partly because I was still exhausted from shooting an in-depth talky talky talky video while in the USA. I had had enough, I loved it but I don't know how some people do that all year! This was shot last winter, just before things kicked off. Out of our planned huge North & South America backpacking trip, we managed to get to a few places before having to come home because of you-know-what. USA coast-to-coast in Amtrak cheap seats: Havana: Coming soon Bogota: Coming soon Galapagos: 💔 didn't happen Machu Picchu: 💔 didn't happen (I did get some kind of infection on my face, which you can see in this video, and when I upload Havana and Bogota, too... subscribe & join the patreon for more content from your favourite English boy living in Europe https://www.patreon.com/TomThornton Shot in Jan 2020. A last romantic view of this beautiful country, travelling across America by train, before *you know*. "I would just fly... train travel in the US is terrible... you're not going to enjoy it... have fun getting all your stuff stolen... why are you doing that?" I'm definitely not the first person to make an Amtrak coast-to-coast video, but judging by some reactions I got along the way, you'd almost think I was. I can't say I wasn't a little worried by how few times we heard "amazing, I would love to do that some day". But anyway, here it is, we travelled across the USA from New York to LA without flying. Travelling overland across America from New York to LA is definitely a fun experience that I would recommend, you see so many cool things that you would miss by flying, and you meet a lot of interesting people. Eco-travel is definitely going to take off soon, too. Obviously it's not the cheapest option for backpacking the USA on a budget, but I would say that for the money you spend, the experience is worth it. A ticket for the California Zephyr between Chicago and San Francisco is about $175 - not a cheap thing to buy, but if you're travelling around and looking to make some cool memories, 100% good value. Of course in the video we get to see all the touristy stuff that people who've never seen the US do, like the Staten Island Ferry, the Smithsonian Museums, San Francisco Pier 39 and Golden Gate Bridge, Monterey Bay Whale Watching, Cloud Gate, Griffith Observatory, etc. If you’re new to Airbnb, you can use my referral link for up to $50 off your first booking, and it gives us some credit too: https://abnb.me/e/da3GgNOrJdb thanks! We did fly in to and out of the USA (I mean there's kind of no other option if you do wanna travel), we landed in JFK and left from LAX. • We got the Greyhound from New York City to Washington DC, which was pretty terrible, and made me start to believe everything I'd read online. But we did get there. • The Amtrak Capitol Limited from Washington DC to Chicago was so much fun, our first taste of the long-distance train rides and showed us so much cool snowy scenery from the North-Eastern United States. We met some cool people and got to hear a lot of Amish hymns. We sat in the cheap seats, without a bed, and just brought our own food and a duvet. It's not perfect, but it was a cool experience and you'd be surprised how peacefully we slept, definitely nothing like I had been warned online (your things will be stolen, you'll be beaten up, you'll be 8 hours late because of all the passengers getting arrested...) • The Amtrak California Zephyr in winter was absolutely incredible, and the whole time I couldn't believe how lucky I was. You can see it in the video, just watching the mountains go by, looking out for eagles and elk, and making new friends. This would be worth it just for fun, but it was actually the transport we needed for our journey... if I had just been sat around in an airport instead of doing this, I would be very mad with myself right now. If you have any questions about riding the California Zephyr on a budget, ask me below. All my favourite pictures from the trip are from this day, either of the scenery out the window or of us outside in snowy alpine train stations stretching our legs. You can definitely ride the California Zephyr in the seats, without a room and without a cabin. If you also stop in Salt Lake City, fyi the California Zephyr leaves at 11pm, and the station is NOT open to check in your bags until 10pm... basically it's the only train, so they just open for it. This left us with our bags in SLC for the day. (For the journey between Chicago and SLC, westbound, sit on the left. Bag a table by one of the left-hand windows, thank me later) •The Amtrak Coast Starlight was another cool journey, we didn't sleep on this because we just did San Francisco to Salinas, and Salinas to Los Angeles. Again we sat in front of the massive windows and watched America go by. If you're lucky enough to save up, quit and go (if the world goes back to normal), I hope this has inspired your USA train travel on a budget backpacking trip :) Camera: https://amzn.to/3bGGrb2 Microphone I use at home: https://amzn.to/2MtTGTF My 40L travel backpack: https://amzn.to/3b3Ywkh Hard drive I use for footage: https://amzn.to/3syP7He 0:00 - Intro 0:30 - New York City 4:47 - Greyhound to Washington, DC 5:30 - Washington, DC 10:10 - Capitol Limited DC to Chicago 12:51 - Chicago 18:00 - California Zephyr Chicago to SLC 23:00 - Salt Lake City 27:55 - California Zephyr SLC to SF 29:46 - San Francisco 35:20 - Coast Starlight SF to Monterey 36:03 - Monterey 39:11 - Coast Starlight Monterey to LA 40:35 - LA Follow me on insta https://www.instagram.com/tomth0rnton/ #travel #californiazephyr #amtrak inspired by Kraig Adams

The forest seemed like the most beautiful and unique backdrop hanging over the tiny figure in the frame. And everyone had a photo there. eyy check it out I made a video.. I remember so strongly the feeling when I saw all those mosquito bites coming up... I rushed home and had some antihistamines asap. Visiting Hiroshima made me feel a lot of things. It's strange to realise you're visiting somewhere for such grim reasons. Hiroshima has some beautiful spots now, for sure, but then we learned about the tragic fate of the local citizens on *that day*. Sometimes travelling is just too sad if you look in to the history that you pass. We used our Japan Rail passes to ride the bullet train here, and arranged our train journeys (started in Tokyo and ending in Osaka) to cover the most distance over that week. The bullet trains are just amazing! I wish I had made a separate video about them. We stayed in a budget hotel in Hiroshima, since there weren't any good hostels available. Hiroshima was definitely worth visiting as part of our budget Japan backpacking trip, but if you're planning to go, you should check if the peace museum is actually open first! eyy check it out I made a video.. We used our JR passes to ride the ferry to Miyajima, made friends with the deer and saw the amazing gate in the sea. I tried the Tommy Lee Jones iced coffee and took one of my favourite photos ever, with the deer under an umbrella. The Miyajima gate always looks amazing on instagram, and it seriously was a beautiful spot in real life. After a long hike up and down the central peak on Miyajima, we sat to watch the tide come in over the gate, surrounded by more begging deer. eyy check it out I made a video.. All I can think of watching this back is how hot it was that day. Kyoto was almost unbearable. The hottest non-Singapore day of the trip was definitely Yogyakarta, but after that, it was this day in Kyoto. Nijojo castle is a beautiful and well-preserved old imperial palace that was used by the rulers of the Edo Period as their home while in Kyoto, and has undergone many changes and redevelopments due to fire, old age, etc. What we weren't allowed to film inside was definitely the best part. Every wall is covered in ancient Japanese artwork featuring tigers, Japanese landscapes and buildings, and members of the shogunate. We heard the singing floor that was deliberately designed to make a noise when walked on, so as to wake up the emperor and his samurai to the sounds of intruders at night. Nijojo is a classic place to visit when in Kyoto, and with good reason. It was reasonably priced, beautifully unique and the grounds are a great place for a walk, too, unless it's like a million degrees outside. eyy check it out I made a video.. Obviously in Kyoto, we went to the bamboo forest. And obviously, we went to Fushimi Inari. The gates that featured in a million instagrams. We were hanging out with an American guy in our cute paper wall hostel in Kyoto and he said if we were going to go, we should definitely go at night because it's less crowded, less hot and extra beautiful. It was good advice! It was a bit creepy at times to be up on this massive hill in the dark with nobody around, but it's very safe and well lit and well signposted. Every time we came to a rest stop, we just said we'd do one more section, but in the end we really wanted to complete it. It's so worth getting to the top just because of the interesting shrines you pass on the way, BUT beyond about half way there are no viewpoints over the lights of Kyoto. Climbing mount Fushimi Inari Shrine at night is definitely one of the best free things to do in Kyoto. It's a classic Japan photography spot, and for good reason. eyy check it out I made a video.. Sumida Hokusai's The Great Wave of Kanagawa is one of the most iconic works of art of all time. In Tokyo, there is a new museum that shows the conditions in his studio, how he made his art, and exhibits all his notebooks and sketchbooks. It's a really interesting cheap thing to do in Tokyo if you are interested in art. We also went to the classic tourist spot Senso-ji, which is a really beautiful temple in the heart of Tokyo. It's an attractive site and well worth a visit, and after all the fake tourist temples of Southeast Asia, this place did seem actually significant to the Japanese. eyy check it out I made a video.. The best cheap thing to do on a rainy day in Tokyo. We spent the day inside at Taito and Sega arcades and could not believe the amazing skills of Japan's mega gamers. The dark and loud rooms are amazing enough, but watching the local people play on the arcade games is unbelievable. They are so good! And we were so bad. We tried some of the music games, dancing games and I even played Type or Die where you have to type to survive. I will never ever forget the wall of sound in those places... Taito / Sega / Super Potato arcades in Tokyo are a great free thing to do in Tokyo. The Japanese gamers are just incredible at all the games. Each game costs about 100 Yen, and you can even pay with the Suica card. eyy check it out I made a video.. Molly had been talking about buying all the Pokemon merch since the day we booked our Japan trip. We'd already been travelling for months, but we were excited about Japan like nowhere else. I agreed to just go along and film all the weirdest things in Japan's biggest Pokemon merch store. Pokemon Mega Center Tokyo Toshima is full of weird and exciting stuff, and I could tell that a lot of detail was put in to the shop itself to make it a cool experience for fans of the game. We had such a good time just being a part of these crazy scenes that you've seen on TV before. I had always wanted to go there and when we were finally able to take the time, it did not disappoint. We even had one uniquely Japanese experience, the capsule hotel, even though I was told at first we would not be able to find a double capsule hotel. We put on the pyjamas they gave us, climbed our ladder, watched some TV and spend the night in our little plastic pod just like I had been looking forward to. Just walking around the streets and enjoying taking pictures was an amazing experience. For one free thing to do in Tokyo, we went up the Metropolitan Government Building, which is a free viewing platform. It's definitely the best free view of Tokyo, seeing as the Skytree is so expensive. This is the first of many Japan videos from our time there. We spent 3 weeks moving around on the bullet trains and it was the best thing ever. This is a really exciting moment in the trip for me. A really long and boring day, but it ends with us finally being able to explore Japan, somewhere I had wanted to see for so long. After 5 days in Tokyo, we bought a two-week Japan Rail pass and hit the Shinkansen. These videos from around Japan will be the end of this series! We flew with Jetstar from Sydney to Gold Coast, Gold Coast to Tokyo Narita. It was a super budget option for that journey, but I have seen Paris-Tokyo with Aeroflot for cheaper. The flights were on time and the machines to check ourselves in worked fine. The planes are a bit more comfortable than the Jetstar short-haul planes, though I didn't think it was as comfortable as Norwegian. This may just be because it was worse in other ways, like not having movies unless you pay extra. We found these ticket deals by just checking google flights and Skyscanner all the time. At the start of the video you can see us walking to the airport - I'd never walked to a flight before but you can save so much money! Sydney metro tickets are about $15 more expensive if you get off at the airport, so we got off at Mascot and walked 25 mins to the airport. I have a few other videos about Australia on a budget: Backpacking Australia on a Budget: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2k42djKwaDQ Sydney Harbour cruise for $7: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tGaKroa668 And also, Instagram vs Reality: Bali Monkey Forest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xv7ByHOkISc This video was my attempt to buy in to the Planetube scene. Maybe it's just the algorithm showing me what I want deep down, but it seems Youtubers always have hit "travel" videos that are based in airports and on aeroplanes. These are the places that the best parts of travelling are the least present, so it is a strange obsession. "I THREW A DART" and "I TOOK THE CHEAPEST FLIGHT" videos are everywhere, and perhaps signify a departure from vicarious travel based on character and culture towards corporate consumption attitudes. As you can probably tell I can't explain it well: it's just strange that videos set in such sterile, mass-produced environments do way better than some real adventure videos. Why watch someone eat the factory-sealed microwave dinner with plastic cutlery instead of what food is on offer at the destination city? After doing the tiring but insanely fun Southeast Asia circuit, Australia was a really attractive but expensive thing to add to the trip. It's such an incredible place to visit. We spent one evening applying to housesitter listings on AussieHouseSitters, which Molly suggested and I didn't think would go anywhere. It seemed to good to be true, but the next day we had a callback from someone that ticked all our boxes: a nice place to stay, animals we love, near to public transport, and in a city we really wanted to explore anyway. Our time looking after 3 cats in a cute suburban house in Melbourne was the best time ever. We were able to stay in Aus for 6 weeks, 2 weeks paying for places to stay and 4 weeks for free, which made the trip even longer. I took out most of the kangaroo clips to make a separate video, the best place to see kangaroos for free in Melbourne: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFBmD3HRqdg General tips for backpacking Australia on a budget: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2k42djKwaDQ Sydney on a budget: See the blue mountains for cheap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ncWOkwoOcc Sydney on a budget: Sydney harbour cruise for cheap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tGaKroa668 Quokka selfies on Rottnest Island, Perth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6WsRYL4NwU Australia to Japan on Jetstar: Cheapest way to Tokyo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd3LJTHQLgc Housesitting is the best way to travel Australia on a budget. You can use supermarkets instead of restaurants, and have all your own space. You may miss out on the social side of hostel life, but for us we had that for months either side of this time housesitting so it was a nice break. We did lots of free things to do in Melbourne, like seeing Kangaroos in Melbourne, and penguins in Melbourne at St Kilda beach, and I enjoyed just walking around town taking photos. eyy check it out I made a video.. A day out in Westerfolds Park, Melbourne, seeing wild kangaroos and joeys. Obviously we wanted to see kangaroos in Australia. In Perth I was kind of disappointed to step down from the plane without seeing them just hopping around everywhere, so it took some research. Westerfolds Park is an amazing place that you can visit on the bus, so it was great for us in our housesit in Melbourne without a car. Just look at public transport directions from where you are in Melbourne to Westerfolds Park. It's free to get in and we saw so many kangaroos, including a mother kangaroo with a Joey! It was incredible for us brits who've never seen them and so much better than paying for a zoo. eyy check it out I made a video.. The Blue Mountains National Park is a really beautiful place with some of Australia's best landscapes. I really wanted to go there while in Sydney, and I was stopped by someone on the street wanting to sell me a tour there, which I liked the sound of - but it was about $200. I later heard that Sydney metro fares are capped at $2.80 for unlimited travel all day Sunday, and that there was a station from which you could get a view of the blue mountains. We used our Opal cards to get to Katoomba and then walked to Echo Point and saw the three sisters, all for $2.80. It's about a 2 hour train from Sydney central, nice and comfortable and with those cool Sydney seats that you can move around to make them face whichever direction you like. So this is great advice for people backpacking Australia on a budget, and especially those who want to see Sydney on a budget. eyy check it out I made a video.. Sydney Harbour cruises are really expensive, but it's the same views, and the same water as a local commuter ferry. If you get an Opal card, you can take a harbour cruise for $7. It goes at a super slow pace thanks to various stops picking people up from both sides of the harbour, so you'll be on the water a good amount of time. We went in June and it was freezing and windy and we still really enjoyed it. eyy check it out I made a video.. The happiest day ever spending time with the quokkas, small and friendly marsupials that are only found on Rottnest Island, near Perth, Australia. We got the quokka selfie and followed the rules about not feeding them (unlike some people we saw). We took the Rottnest Express from Fremantle, where we were staying at the Pirate Hostel, to Rottnest Island and spent all day there with the quokkas. We were travelling on a budget and so a bit skeptical about spending £30 on the return journey, but it was more than worth it. As soon as we left the quokkas, we were on our way to Melbourne where we'd spend an incredible month. The 1000-hour Melbourne video could be up on this channel within a few years :) I just uploaded my Isle of Skye video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1Io2wdWQ6E) out of sequence, in reality I went to Australia and Japan in the same trip as Southeast Asia, but I went to Skye while editing and couldn't wait to put it up. eyy check it out I made a video.. Tips for planning a trip to the Isle of Skye on a budget. We had an amazing and comparably cheap trip from the Isle of Wight to Skye, which we did without a car and without flying. The Scottish Highlands can be a very expensive destination, so these are some tips from our week in Broadford and Portree for how to do it without breaking the bank. To see the full experience of this beautiful place, check out my video of the journey here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1Io2wdWQ6E We slept in a room on the Caledonian Sleeper, then rode the Deerstalker from Fort William to Mallaig, then the ferry from Mallaig to Armadale, and then the stagecoach bus from Armadale to Broadford and later Broadford to Portree. More information: https://www.seat61.com/CaledonianSleepers.htm https://www.seat61.com/deerstalker.htm One thing I didn't mention in this travel planning on a budget video, be sure to take waterproof trousers and a decent waterproof coat, even it's sunny when you leave. They saved us so many times! Mostly if you avoid the temptation to have £20 local mussels for dinner and do whiskey tours, you will save a lot of money. We just made our own meals from the co-op and had a great time on hikes around Portree. Time spent outside on this island is never wasted, and I'd love to go back some day :) We saw the quiraing, fairy pools, fairy glens, and lots of Scottish history but didn't get to do a raasay boat tour because of bad weather. eyy check it out I made a video.. This video is the story of a trip from the Isle of Wight to the Isle of Skye without a car and without flying. Skye is one of the most amazingly beautiful places I've ever been to - on the way to certain places that have become famous you pass by 10 other incredible views. You want to stop and appreciate every part of the countryside. I also made a video about how to plan your own trip to Skye without a car and on a budget: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju3dVn0_4HQ We kept to a pretty tight budget and enjoyed the Isle of Skye in April before it is apparently overrun. Going out of season is a trade-off - it was way quieter but the rain was kind of a downer. This was a great train travel trip in the UK, probably the best that you can do. Backpacking on the train is a lot of fun and we saw some beautiful places on our rail trip. We got the sleeper train from London Euston, the Caledonian Sleeper and this video features a full review and cabin tour. We boooked the tickets online. We took the Calmac ferry from Malaig to Armadale after going over the Glenfinnan viaduct on the train. When staying in Broadford, we rented electric bikes from South Skye Cycles and took the road to Elgol. This was an unforgettable bike ride and I constantly wanted to stop and film, since every 100m we saw something else that seemed amazing and made me wish I hadn't stopped at the previous place. From Portree, we went on a couple of small hikes and took a minibus tour to the Quiraing, Fairy Glens, Fairy Pools, Uig, The Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock and a few other places. It was the best trip ever. To everyone who wanted more Behind The Instagram. As with other videos in this series, this is really how I felt about this place and how spending time there relates to how it is presented online. When in SEA, I was frustrated at the amount of perfect beach photos you see online and the lack of decent analysis or reality. I wasn't sure how to turn that in to making my own thing, but here we are: another look behind the instagram at the reality of traveling to a place 👍 enjoy! Behind the Instagram - Ubud Monkey Forest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xv7ByHOkISc Ubud Tegalalang rice terrace is a cool place and lots of explore-agram photos are taken there. They looked really cool, so I wanted to go for myself. It's not so easy to get to as other popular spots with the lack of grab or public transport. It was another set of cool views that we had seen on our budget backpacking trip to Indonesia, without being really amazing. One place that everyone you follow has probably been: Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary Ubud. Instagram is this place's biggest marketing tool. People are able to get really good shots right up close to the monkeys, and the setting adds to the feel of the photo too. I started to film this video because I was skeptical of this place - can it really be good for monkeys to be crowded with cameras? And behind the cameras, will it really be just a shiny commercial tourist centre? Bali monkey forest vlog, baby monkeys, budget travel Indonesia. One of my last Southeast Asia videos! My memories of Java are full of fun little stories of people taking pictures with us, even if the place itself seemed like a bit of a drag at the time. I hate it when people overuse "off the beaten track", especially in countries with huge cities and intercity transport links, but Java really did feel off the beaten track after some of the places we had been. I still don't really get why people wanted selfies with us, but we saw a lot of cool things travelling across this island. We travelled across Java by rail, including Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Malang, using the train stations and public transport, and we saw Borobudur. Why climbing Hang Mua in Vietnam made me so emotional: 6 months before going travelling I was on crutches, and even after leaving the UK I wasn't confident walking for long distances. I managed the more active days with a lot of ibuprofen and doing nothing the next day. In Vietnam, almost two months since leaving home, we climbed to the famous Hang Mua viewpoint, a staircase of about 500 steps. I was pretty emosh at the top. I felt I had recovered and become stronger faster while travelling than I was previously achieving at home. I think I was forced to push through it more and really test myself. After this video I had the crippling knee pain very rarely for the rest of the trip. For my whole time in Asia, I was doing ACL rehab stretches with an exercise band. Good fun in dorms :) When I'm moaning at 1:30, it's about rowing through the caves at Trang An Grotto. I didn't film anything because I was busy being scared. Our time rowing was really great, the views outside were amazing and our rower lady was so helpful. But the caves - why!? Tips for travelling Australia on a budget. When you land in Sydney, the train in to the city costs about $17. This is because of a price hike for using the airport station. If you walk 20 mins to Mascot station you can go in to the city for $2. If you do this both ways, you save $30. Another benefit of packing light. We made the Mascot-to-airport walk at 3am on the way out of Sydney. Worth it. I just spent 6 weeks travelling Australia. Fremantle / Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. Would have loved to see even more but that was quite enough money spent on Jetstar already. This video is about how you can backpack Australia without a crazy budget. Don't do the expensive outdoor activities, and housesit instead of staying in a hostel. When I was in Melbourne for a month I spent less than £10 a day. We were staying in a house for free and spent probably £5 on food and £5 on public transport per day, sometimes less. What a life. How to backpack Southeast Asia on a budget. I went to Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia and I've consulted my travel journal to give you 14 of my best tips for cheap travel, and how you can travel Southeast Asia on a budget of £15/$20 a day. I spent under £400 per a month in each of Indonesia and Vietnam, and a little more than that in Thailand and Malaysia. Basically you can spend £5 on food, £5 on transport and £5 on a bed per night and you're laughing. This includes some days where you spend nothing on transport and some days where you spend £20, it averages out. This video contains some travel hacks to make your time in Southeast Asia way more affordable so you can travel for longer on a tighter budget. Denmark on a budget: 7 tips for how to get the most out of Copenhagen on an extremely tight budget. My girlfriend and I just had an awesome time there, budgeting £50 for 4 days, which in Denmark I don't think is bad at all... The free no-commission/inter-bank exchange rate worldwide card that I mentioned budgeting with is www.monzo.com #notspon (update 2018: monzo now has £200/month free abroad withdrawals with 3% fee after that, still the best deal around, also after this video I became a crowdfunding investor in them, still my genuine recommendation based on experience) Total £50/4 days = £12/day, plus £23/night cheapskate airbnb apartment :) Video music: Music by Floppy Circus https://soundcloud.com/floppycircus https://www.facebook.com/FloppyCircus/ Outro music: Music by Joakim Karud http://youtube.com/joakimkarud https://soundcloud.com/joakimkarud/mondays Title font: http://www.fontspace.com/kineticplasma-fonts/b%C3%B8rkb%C3%B6rk Follow me on insta https://www.instagram.com/tomth0rnton/ Camera: https://amzn.to/3bGGrb2 Microphone I use at home: https://amzn.to/2MtTGTF My 40L travel backpack: https://amzn.to/3b3Ywkh Hard drive I use for footage: https://amzn.to/3syP7He (colour graded with f.lux left on sorry)

Oslo on a budget - 7 tips for how to get the most out of Oslo on an extremely tight budget. My girlfriend and I just had an awesome time there, budgeting £50 for 4 days, which in Norway I don't think is bad at all. (unfortunately the national gallery recently removed free entry on Thursdays so that will be an extra 120 NOK if you still want to go) The free no-commission/inter-bank exchange rate worldwide card that I mentioned budgeting with is www.monzo.com #notspon (update 2018: monzo now has £200/month free abroad withdrawals with 3% fee after that, still the best deal around) (also feel like I should update this with a note to say that after this video came out I became a crowdfunding investor in Monzo - it was still my genuine recommendation from experience long before this though) Total £50/4 days = £12/day, plus £18/night cheapskate accommodation :) copenhagen on a shoestring url: https://youtu.be/7cSSDa-1CTA gothenburg on a shoestring url: https://youtu.be/_aomSjT4M44 Video music: Music by Bonus Points - Lost in the Tropics https://soundcloud.com/bonuspoints https://www.facebook.com/BonusPoints992/ https://bonuspoints1.bandcamp.com/ Outro music: Music by Joakim Karud http://youtube.com/joakimkarud https://soundcloud.com/joakimkarud/mondays Title font: http://www.fontspace.com/kineticplasma-fonts/b%C3%B8rkb%C3%B6rk Follow me on insta https://www.instagram.com/tomth0rnton/ Camera: https://amzn.to/3bGGrb2 Microphone I use at home: https://amzn.to/2MtTGTF My 40L travel backpack: https://amzn.to/3b3Ywkh Hard drive I use for footage: https://amzn.to/3syP7He insta: tomth0rnton gear: https://kit.co/tomthornton/how-to-travel-vlog-low-key-gear

We loved Budapest and would love to go back some day. This video features the Fisherman's Bastion in Budapest at night, the architecture there is amazing and looking over the river at the parliament building etc was great. We had dinner in a restaurant by the river in Budapest, watching the sun go down. And we used Budapest public transport to get over the river and to the fisherman's bastion, and from there enjoyed the views over the Hungarian government building at night. Thanks for watching!
