Little over a month ago, a 7.8 Magnitude earthquake struck the city of Kahramanmaraş in Southern Turkey, it was a devastating event. But it was not the first of its kind in Turkey, far from it, and its severity reflects a decades long problem within Turkish politics and its construction culture. The Trans-Siberian railway, at least to me, has always been an enigmatic topic in the sphere of Russian history. It's very famous today, but I have seen virtually no coverage of its origins and history outside of a Wikipedia article or two. Needless to say, Wikipedia isn't exactly a very thorough or extensive source. Considering its cultural clout and fame, I thought that this was a particularly sorry state of affairs and that it deserved a bit more of the limelight. Well, here's that limelight. I first encountered this topic while visiting Madrid in 2020, when a certain widespread phenomenon had caused most tourists to shy away from travel. In April of 1967, the Soviet Union embarked on a voyage that would result in one of the most devastating cosmonautic failures of the century. Vladimir Komarov, one of the USSR's most prolific pilots took to the helm of 'Soyuz One' and would struggle against the ineptitude of Soviet leadership valiantly alongside his comrade Yuri Gagarin. His efforts, dashed by misfortune and Soviet obstinance would result in his untimely demise, with his capsule crashing down in Orenburg on the 24th of April 1967.
