Feels so good to finally post this! Unending thanks to all the friends who worked to help make this happen, and all of the folks over on the patreon! A lot changed over the course of making this episode (you can probably feel it), and while I'm really excited about this episode, I'm even more excited to keep everything moving for the next bit; the big goal is to be able to finish these things a bit faster than every 3 years :P Thanks so much for watching- I hope you enjoy it. If you DID enjoy it and want to chip in a bit financially for future episodes, I've documented a ton of the process (and shared a bunch of assets) over on my Patreon. Mostly VFX/blender tutorials and such, but also more general breakdowns, too, and I'd of course love to see you there. http://www.patreon.com/IanHubert Also, HUGE thanks to Impossible Acoustic for being down to take on this project! The degree to which the audio sculpts the end experience here is absolutely wild. https://www.impossibleacoustic.com Composited in After Effects, All 3d work in Blender (blender.org) Huge thanks again, to everyone :D

www.patreon.com/IanHubert Finally finished this up! Sorry to anyone who thought it was going to be longer; that'd be a blast some day, but this got it out of my system for now :) Solid mix of hand animated stuff, physics sims, and data from a Rokoko mocap suit (learned a ton about IK rigging, too, to mix it all up)! Music by Wilbert Roget II Thanks to the Photoscanned Models, Sean Farbolin, Kaitlin Romig, Johnny Valencia, Nate Taylor, Ian Hubert Made in blender, with some After Effects postwork

https://www.patreon.com/IanHubert Extended Version Here: https://youtu.be/I6xOT17NtRQ Just a quick intro to IK rigging! It's probably the most useful thing I learned last year (after putting it off for, like, literally a decade and a half). Also- Been working like a wildman on Dynamo Dream. Sending it to the sound team in the next few days, then I'll be able to make a few more tuts! Have some stuff I'm really excited to talk about!

First Episode Here: https://youtu.be/LsGZ_2RuJ2A Hoh man- the little compressed instagram version of this breakdown has been reposted so many times I figured it'd be good to release a version with a couple more pixels! I've been really excited about this type of workflow in terms of what it means for making crazy films in a garage, and I've been experimenting a bunch with it in the months since (tons of viewport compositing in Blender. All the CG stuff in this video is blender's realtime eevee engine, which has just been a blast). I've been posting lots of breakdowns/tuts/experiments on the patreon (thank you to everyone over there!): https://www.patreon.com/IanHubert Although I'm still working on full-on- tutorials I'll be posting here for everyone pretty quick. Almost done! Bit off more than I could chew for a minute here :P The original Dynamo Dream teaser: https://youtu.be/qG31WSioSxk

https://www.patreon.com/IanHubert I use this trick all the time- it's a ridiculously quick way to add some randomness/realism to your scene/objects. Didn't do an extended version this time, because it's basically just the first 20 seconds over and over!

Modeling Buildings in Blender Lazy Tutorial: https://youtu.be/t_c58ryJ-Sw Also- I motion track, from time to time, but there are people who make it their THING, man- here are a few great resources: Sebastian's Match Track Blend series is basically the de facto tracking series- he gives a great intro here: https://youtu.be/G8b4lmB2t68 Sean's video introduced me to the detect features option: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNU_lXjWtWM And CGMatter has absolutely everything you ever might want to know in his videos here: https://youtu.be/InIuTtt7W3E

First Episode Here: https://youtu.be/LsGZ_2RuJ2A I've got a new series coming pretty quick here! Dynamo Dream! Been working on it for the past few years, but got hung up for a bit because I wanted the first episode to be a bit over the top. http://www.patreon.com/IanHubert ALSO- I want to make a tutorial series going through the making of a shot like this, from greenscreen to motion tracking, environmental modeling, lighting, and compositing, all in Blender. This was also all (apart from the live action elements), rendered in the realtime eevee render engine, which is pretty darn cool. Extended Version: https://youtu.be/CRSm-dNOogE ALSO I FORGOT: you gotta apply the array modifiers. You'll probably figure that out. But you gotta do it. I couldn't decide whether to make this tutorial about elvis mosaics or scrolling reader boards, soooo here's both.

This was mostly just a late night test to see if I could apply the same mocap data to a robot and a little pilot, and it worked well enough that I fleshed it out! Also, I'm releasing it (and the robot model) under creative commons 0, if anyone wants to use them for anything: http://robotsoup.com/crab-battle.html Audio by Impossible Acoustic Crab modeled by Nathan Taylor Mocap data captured with a Rokoko Smartsuit CG done in Blender

Extended Version Here: https://youtu.be/22ZOvCv6lRU SO. We did one of these a while back, and it's all well and good- but this version lets you more creatively model full 360 buildings, instead of being constrained by the original image- which is often a lot more useful (AND... fun?) yea yea yea!

So! In the new 2.8 update, the defaults are such that if you extrude faces you might get a weird glitch where some faces are transparent (you'll know it when you see it)- it's a super easy fix, though! Open material properties, go to "Settings" and check "Backface Culling"- that'll fix it right up! Also! To find "CORRECT UVS"- since folks have been having some trouble- you have to make an edge loop first, and an adaptive menu appears in the lower left of the viewport giving you more options. You might have to click on an arrow to expand it. Honestly I should have done this one a while ago. I've used it literally a hundred times. The best part is, once you have a building, you can use it over and over in different projects. If you feel like watching the uncut screen capture, it's here. It's also boring: https://youtu.be/KBBeSHJlfRo download blender at Blender.org https://www.patreon.com/IanHubert

For lazy people by lazy people- how to model pipes! Sci-fi pipes, or just regular pipes. Get the (free!) UV Squares addon here: https://github.com/p2or/UvSquares/tree/blender-28 For UV unwrapping, it's invaluable. Radivarig is a saint. OH OH ALSO WOW- after you turn up the bevel depth in the curve panel, hit "ALT+C, convert to mesh". Then you can select the edge loop. Wow. That'll teach me to make these things at 4am.

Just a quick before and after of exiting the ship from the latest Dynamo episode (out now!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ambpl0AGTfI Thanks to Rowan Rhys for acting (and exceptional balance) and Sean Farbolin for figuring out the ladder scenario! Tracking was done in the After Effects 3d tracker. Literally just, like, one click (maybe a little babysitting), and 9 minutes later I had the motion copied into blender and the whole thing blocked out. It was incredibly straightforward. The Blender tracker is crazy powerful, but if I'm being lazy, it's really nice to be able to just click a button. Feel free to check out the series at Karmapirates.com if you haven't before.

I'm proud to release my latest feature film- and probably my most cohesive creative work to date. One second of footage slowed to an hour and a half. In your fast-paced modern life, when was the last time you really took a moment for yourself? It's a film with an undeniably powerful message. If your life were as slow as this revolutionary film, you'd live to be nearly 500,000 years old- but- it's not, and you won't, and so maybe you should think about that instead of the latest geopet or iphone or Christina Argulara. Also climate change, which this film makes you think about also. Dedicated to Teague Chrystie. #dogme95

Phew! It's been over 4 years since I last uploaded a demo reel, so I figured I should get things updated! Feel free to check out my (soon to be updated) website at www.robotsoup.com Most all of the 3d stuff was done in Blender, with compositing in After Effects. A lot of the footage comes from the film I've been working on for the past 4 years, "Project London" (www.projectlondonmovie.com). The shot flying down the city street is from Andrew Bellware's film 'Clonehunter' http://pandoramachine.com/films/0904/. The song was written by my friend Scott Hampson and I, and performed by him. ALSO! Other folks who deserve great shoutouts for parts of the CG work in there: Paul Spooner, Dolf Veenvliet, Nathan Vegdahl, Nate Taylor, and a lot of the Project London footage was shot by Barry Gregg.
