Thanks a ton to Mikey for spending a little time chatting with me about this. Right now, there is a great deal to focus on, and that's a real problem...it's also by design. I think it makes sense that a lot of focus is on Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia right now. The fact that he is already out of the US in a prison he was not meant to be in and that the Trump administration seems ready to defy the supreme court's request to bring him back is very specifically worrying and I am very moved and disturbed by that story. But reading Mohsen's story also deeply disturbed me and we need to be active and pushing from as many angles as possible to make it clear that you cannot defy the laws of this country openly without some pushback. If you'd like to call your elected representatives about this, here are some talking points: 1. Mohsen Mahdawi is a pacifist who only ever peacefully protested and went viral for pushing back against people who were saying anti-semetic things. 2. He has not been accused of a crime, which is because no one things he committed a crime. 3. In America, we have the right to speak our minds and actions like revoking someone's greencard because they helped organize peaceful protest is deeply unamerican.

Having thought about this more, I think that the Biden admin might be saying "expungement" when they mean "pardons act kinda like expungements in the eyes of most of society" which they should not be doing. I have friends who are very ambitious and friends who are not ambitious at all and those are both very good ways to be. Like, I get that I'm wrong...but it's very similar to how I feel about people saying the world is flat. Like, "OK, but not /really/ right?" I just feel like, despite the fact that there are a lot of people who legimiately don't believe CO2 is heating the planet, it's fringe belief and I'm just done making space in my head for those people.

I've been trying to work on this for a long time now. Like, of course this is all kinda metaphor, and I've been told that "cancer is you" but...it's not really. I mean, I don't know what /I/ am...but it's basically a bunch of cells that work together to further the agenda of getting their shared genes to the next generation of human. Here's a little script for you: Hey, I just wanted to call and say how important it is to me that YOUR REPRESENTATIVE OR SENATOR is taking climate change seriously. I know we've got a chance right now to set targets, like getting an 80% decrease in emissions by 2030 and investing a lot in new and existing technologies. Anything that YOUR SENATOR OR REPRESENTATIVE can do to make this a reality really matters so much, and I appreciate it. IF THEY ASK FOR MORE INFORMATION (sometimes you get a real person) I just know that the budget reconciliation bill is one of our last chances to pass meaningful laws that will affect our impact on the climate. I guess the question is, should I feel guilty for feeling guilty of the people I love gave me the thing I'm feeling guilty for? Three things. 1. I'm tired of arguing about what to call it 2. This is a hard and expensive problem and it isn't just because powerful people don't want to engage with it, it's also because it's HARD. 3. Because Why Not!

Very curious what people think about this video. I feel like, of course, some conversation and understanding has to exist outside of science, but I just feel like the more we do this, the more we end up with diverging ideas that have nothing to do with reality, much less each other. But, then, we also need to converse...to propose new ideas and new ways of understanding the world. I just also think they should contain proper warnings about bias.

Basically... 1. People don't hire people to create jobs, they hire people to do jobs. 2. The method through which economic opportunity and job creation occurs is complicated and involves many many people, not just the person who starts or owns or runs a business. 3. Entrepreneurship is not charity, it is only a public good if the business does good work and treats it's employees fairly. 4. None of this is to say that business people aren't totally dope and don't work very hard at stressful jobs that need to be done. I'm just happy with that role being defined by more accurate terms like CEO or entrepreneur or small business owner. I dunno...all of this stuff is complicated, but I am wary of stories with one hero. One thing I can say for sure...the people who support SciShow and Crash Course on Patreon are job creators if anyone is...so thanks to everyone who does that.

Different simple sugars are processed differently by your body, but all medical evidence indicates that, in the long run, they have the same affect on your health...a negative affect. And while how the sugar is physically packaged can help slow the metabolism of the sugar, or decrease the amount you're able to consume quickly, fruit juices and sodas are THE EXACT SAME despite the fact that one has sugar added by people and the other has sugar added by plants.

Even with 35 minutes I feel like I didn't do a great job discussing this issue, which is maybe part of the problem. There isn't a simple solution, but an important part of moving forward is that platforms need to be aware that making advertisers happy and making creators happy are not always the same things. And since advertisers are having no problems exercising their levarage against YouTube, creators need to do the same. We need features for us, and we need to keep YouTube from being a bland place full of well-dressed, friendly white guys tousling Donald Trump's hair.

I think there is a great deal that non-religious people have to learn from religious people...and one big on is to let go of individualism a bit. Not entirely, just a bit. Because it is too dang hard for people to do things together in this world. OK, well, this is weird. I hope it's useful to some people.

There are like 20 different companies that do canal cruises in Amsterdam and three of them leave from the same little harbor in front of the central train station. These canal boats spin around fill up with people, and zoom through to other ports along the canal system. This is about 20 minutes of that harbor sped up to 1 minute and 30 seconds. https://store.dftba.com/collections/vlogbrothers For our 10th anniversary, we worked with Claire Emery, a Missoula-based artist, to create a series of wood-cut prints celebrating Nerdfighteria. I've been a fan of Claire's work for years and when we were trying to figure out an exciting and one-of-a-kind way to celebrate this moment, she was the first person who came to mind. These images are created by hand-cutting a piece of wood with the image, painting on some ink, and then running it through a press. After a a certain number of runs, the wood starts to break down and the prints can never be made again, so these will be very limited. The color ones are hand-colored by Claire (which is why they're so expensive.) We aren't making any money on these, the entire cost goes to the artist for her time and materials. I spend about 10% of my free time thinking about YouTube, which is, like a lot. That's a lot of time to devote to something that you really can't control...at all. So I figured that it was important to open a line communication. Sometime I talk to individuals at the company, and they are all extremely intelligent and open to what I have to say. I appreciate this very deeply but, of course, my expertise is in making videos that reach a bunch of people. So, yeah, here we are.

I had someone ask me what I did between the jump cuts in my videos...so, to answer, I just exported a minute-long clip from the beginning of my Egypt episode completely unedited so that you can see inside this GLORIOUSLY UNINTERESTING process. Sorry if seeing behind the curtain ruins anything for you, but, yeah, one of the secrets to video blogging is getting good at just doing it over and over and over and over again until you really like it. So yeah, what do I do? I screw up, dislike the way I say things, try again, check my outline / script, and occasionally adjust my chair. It's worth noting that this minute and 24 seconds got edited down into about 10 seconds of final video.

I found this month's old conversation while cleaning off my hard drive. I didn't remember it at all, and I thought it was awesome, so I wanted to share. I completely forgot who is holding the Camera, but also included in the conversation is Mitchell Moffit of ASAPScience. This was filmed after-hours at a conference YouTube put together for people who make educational videos. It's hard to hear in spots, but Vi does indeed say "I would /invent/ a dance floor" at one point.

This is the one that gave me the most trouble...by a pretty wide margin. God I'm bad at accents.

Just, yeah, as the title says. We were in Seaside Florida when we saw this adorable little guy (I think it's a young fox squirrel, not a gray) having the time of his life playing around in the park. Pretty sure it was healthy, just young and playing. First it chewed a seedling oak out of the ground and played with that. Then it found a bit of wood and that was just as good. The voices are me, Katherine, and her parents in the background.

So I made a video last week, and I wanted to make a follow up to discuss, in fact, how I feel being silly about what is, in fact, a very serious set of ideas put forth in The Hunger Games.

One of the most important lessons I've ever learned is that it's OK to not have an opinion when you do not have enough information. Whether the dramatic simplifications that IC promotes is worth the amount of energy they create, I do not know. Whether funding the Ugandan military will, in the end, decrease world suck...I do not know. Before I started all of the fine, fancy editing with the time lapse and the music, I did a rough cut of all of the most interesting bits that I recorded (I only recorded about a half an hour over the four hours.) Then I pulled that rough cut into a separate sequence to make the sparkly fancy video for Vlogbrothers. But, I figured, since i had the rough cut anyway and there's some pretty funny stuff in there, I'd put it online here.

One of the smartest and coolest guys I know (Frezned) then posted this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wT_dqETarHQ about how he took exception to the message. In this video, I inexpertly argue that significance is only bestowed upon anything by ourselves, and that the universe doesn't care...but that that doesn't really matter.

So I was going through cleaning off my hard drive and I found a directory full of videos from VidCon 2010. The first one was this one of John and me walking out on stage for the first time. It was the moment when all of it became real and I was really freaking out and so was John. The guys back stage are two of the YouTube employees we were going to be introducing for their keynote. I just wanted to make sure that I always have this and that it doesn't get lost in a hard drive crash or something, so I wanted to put it up on this channel. It was a really amazing moment.

Not your traditional out-takes, but actual edited footage that I didn't quite fit the tone of the video. Gotta keep it under four minutes!

I got to hang out with him once in D.C. at a YouTube event and it was super fun. So I follow him on twitter. I saw him announce this little live show thing, almost like chat roulette, but his own thing so there are no penises. And people wait in line to have Merton sing them songs. And you get to skip ahead in line if you tweet a link and people come and visit. Well, I did that, so I got to the front of the line! I missed the first half of the "performance" before I got my screencap software turned on, but I caught the second two short merton songs.

Common Rider is one of my favorite bands of all time. They're pretty much completely unknown as far as I can tell. Signal Signal is a track from their first album, which came out in 1999. I can't FREAKING BELIEVE IT'S BEEN THAT LONG! Anyhow, I'm not really sure what Signal Signal is about, but I sure love it.

I mean...not that the production didn't work, it clearly became quite a significant hit, but I think it's ridiculous that it's sung by a 26 year old divorcee.

So, at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, you can go into Ollivander's shop. There, you get to watch a little skit between one of Ollivander's employees and someone selected from the audience. Well, Lauren Fairweather (the Wizard Rocker) was selected and somewhat hilariously reacted. Sorry the video is total crap and the sound isn't much better. You probably had to be there, but it was freaking awesome

So Shay and I had the same 6:00 flight out of SFO last week and we were up so late we decided not to sleep...as we were once competitors in BlogTV's iron man competition, it brought back some memories But mostly we just rolled around on the floor laughing...I mean, why not. I slept the entire next day.

So here's what I did...I got a really great live recording of my show at the Triple Door and then I asked people who video'd parts of that show to send me what they recorded, then I matched the videos with the audio and edited between them when I could. There are still lots of blank bits, which is too bad, particularly the parts where I'm talking between songs. And a couple of the songs were only captured by a lone cell phone camera, but the best parts were covered by multiple cameras, which I think is really cool.

Yup...no editing involved. They put me in the front because,believe it or not, I as the heaviest and they need to balance out the cargo in the back. In the back are Tim DeLaGhetto, Lisa Nova, Erin (water.org communications) and Laura (water.org Haiti specialist.) In the front is Captain Mike, who's been flying this route for 20 years without incident. Somehow that did not make me less nervous...or less sick to my stomach. Pignon (pronounced Pee-yon) is a small town of about 10,000 people on the central plateau of Haiti. The flight was uneventful and I did not puke, which is my definition of success.

These folks (and a few others) stuck around and helped me out as I waited for the locksmith to come and open my car (yes...I lost the keys to my rental car...it's embarassing) I have no idea where they went, but I'm pretty sure they just fell out of my pockets somewhere or one of those curmudgeonly civil war society guys stole them out of spite. Either that or Spock made them evaporate with his mind so I'd hang out longer. Turned into a pretty excellent night, despite not being able to do any of the work I needed to do....

My cousins live in San Diego and I got to have dinner with them. Yay Mexican!
