Biking in the suburbs tends to suck. Sure, they sometimes have some nice recreational pathways, and many residential streets are fine for short trips. But most suburbs are not set up to support cycling for transportation, especially on the enormous arterials with the most destinations. But what if cycling in the suburbs sucked less? And what if, eventually, it didn’t suck at all? NIMBYs from all over point to Paris as an argument against allowing tall buildings in their cities. Paris is a city everyone loves that achieves very high population densities mostly with mid-rise buildings. Actually, mid-rise Paris is denser than high-rise New York. Checkmate, tall-building-ists! Is there anything to this argument? Well, kind of, but they’re also missing some big details. The simple cul-de-sac is one of the greatest innovations of North American suburbia. By blocking through traffic, you create a residential street that’s safer and calmer for kids and that’s quieter and more community-oriented for adults. The suburbs have the advantage of being built like this from the start, but can we retrofit older cities with some of these principles? As Canada’s most populous province considers tunneling a new highway underneath the existing Highway 401, one of the busiest in the world reaching up to 18 lanes wide, we want to tackle a related argument against housing: “The same [urbanists] who say ‘just build more lanes’ is doomed to fail never see that ‘just build more units’ is doomed for the same reason.” This is a reference to induced demand or induced traffic, a concept that describes how new roads or lanes tend to fill up and not help congestion as much as promised or at all. In the short term, people take more trips by car and are less careful about avoiding rush hour. In the medium term, people and businesses see the new road capacity and move to the area to use it. The question critics are asking then is that if building more roads is futile, doesn’t the same apply to housing? In 2019, this wide open intersection in a residential neighbourhood in Montreal was transformed into l’île aux volcans — the island of volcanoes — a public space for children intended to encourage non-programmed free play, something that’s become less and less common in the modern world of attention-grabbing technology like tablets and YouTube. Can we just tell cyclists to ride on the sidewalk (or footpath) and avoid all this stupid bike-specific infrastructure? We covered this briefly before in an old “bad arguments against bike lanes” video early in the channel but seeing it come up dozens of times recently tells us that it needs to be covered in more detail. One criticism of urbanism and the movement for walkable cities is that it’s just a fad among young people who have no responsibilities and want to be close to trendy bars, restaurants, and concerts. They’ll grow out of it and move to the suburbs when they want to settle down and start families. We actually have our first child on the way so in this video we want to talk about what this gets wrong, whether it gets anything right, and what urbanism means for families. The premier of Canada’s most populous province has doubled down on his anti-cycling rhetoric, promising to remove existing bike lanes on primary roads. He singled out three important routes that had been major wins for cycling in Toronto: Bloor Street, Yonge Street, and University Avenue. What does rush hour on a popular bike route in Montreal look like? Here's Saint-Denis Street from 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm on a Friday in September. “Cyclists are ***holes, they’ll see a bike lane and ride in the road because they can.” That’s an actual comment we got on this channel, and it’s one of the most puzzling arguments we’ve ever seen against urban cycling and bike infrastructure. It’s just so counterintuitive, like hearing someone claim that drivers are parking their cars in farmers’ fields instead of parking lots. If it’s happening, it’s a little odd, something we should investigate instead of saying “well, I guess there’s no point in bike lanes”. So one day I saw it happening and decided to figure out what was going on. Earlier this summer I was riding along a new bike lane under construction when I came across this poster: “Help save our neighbourhood. We promised ourselves never to make another video about 15-minute cities. The conspiracy theories about people being locked inside their homes and unable to travel are just so far out of left field that it’s hard to engage with them like any normal disagreement. But this video is going to be different. Rather than tackling the conspiracy theories, we want to actually talk about the problems or at least the limitations of the 15-minute city concept itself. After visiting Chicago this spring, we continued on to Washington, DC—a fascinating city that surprisingly doesn’t receive as much attention in the online urbanist community as it deserves. Montreal is not a city you associate with transit-oriented development. The typical metro station is surrounded by medium-density walk-ups, and where higher density does exist it’s not necessarily correlated with transit. But while it’s no Vancouver or Washington, DC, Montreal has been building more density near transit over the past two decades than you probably realize. In this video we’re going to check in on some TOD around the city to explain the promising potential and the fundamental problem with transit-oriented development. In talking up the density of low-rise walk-up apartments, many people claim that the Plateau in Montreal is the densest borough or neighbourhood in all of Canada. I’m not sure where this originally came from but the assertion even shows up on the Wikipedia page. At 13,000 people per square kilometre, the Plateau is pretty dense. But is it really the densest in the country? We once heard a story from a driver in downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia who was annoyed that a cyclist was slowing him down. Do you know what he said? “You’re not saving the environment, buddy.” This was interesting. The assumption was that if you’re on a bike trying to get somewhere you must be doing it for environmental reasons, probably in an annoyingly self-righteous way. But what if it was just a convenient way to get to work without having to worry about parking? What if it was how he spends time with his kids? What if he just enjoys the fresh air and activity? What if he sold a car in order to save money for other priorities? What if he just finds driving unpleasant? None of this occurred to the driver. The assumption was that the cyclist was there on a bike slowing them down for environmental reasons, probably climate change in particular. We’ve all kind of blocked it out of our minds but the COVID pandemic was absolutely devastating for transit ridership and even now, four years since 2020, we haven’t fully recovered. But some cities and systems actually fared much worse, while others have rebounded almost to their pre-pandemic numbers. In this video we’re going to take a look at the fall and recovery of rapid transit systems in the US and Canada to see who made it through the best and the worst. If you’re visiting Canada as a person who likes dense, lively cities, our #1 recommendation is Montreal. It’s the strongest city for bike culture and infrastructure and it’s miles ahead on car-free streets and other pedestrian improvements, especially in the warmer months. Toronto and Vancouver stack up pretty well on transit so we can’t say that Montreal is the best there, but it’s unique with the Paris-inspired metro that’s full of interesting architecture and art. Chicago and Toronto are the two biggest cities of the Great Lakes megaregion of North America, and they share a lot of similarities. They have similar populations, climates, street grids, and positions on the lake. To Americans, Toronto is sideways Chicago; to Canadians it’s the opposite. But how do these two Great Lakes metropolises compare? When you argue for housing reform to legalize denser development in our cities, you quickly learn that some people hate density. Like, really hate density, with visceral disgust and contempt for any development pattern that involves buildings being tall or close together. We’ve had a complicated relationship with biking in the winter. Unlike some of our favourite channels on the topic, we’re not long-time winter cyclists ourselves. We only started getting into year-round cycling a few years ago. At first it was exciting, we were breaking a mental block that we didn’t realize we had. So you don’t need to stop biking when the weather gets cold and snow starts to fall? Why didn’t anyone tell us this before? Why is our culture so weird about this? But biking in the winter never really became something we did that often. We did it here and there, it was a fun novelty, but it never felt that natural and we still shifted to walking and transit for most of our winter transportation needs. In a video recently we talked about the bad pedestrian experience in Miami. In response to this video we got some comments telling us to stop complaining. We actually understand this instinctive and emotional reaction people have against strangers coming to their city and criticizing it. But whether or not we should stop complaining, what do the numbers actually say about danger on Miami’s streets? Montreal is unique as a major North American city where the main language of everyday life isn’t English or even Spanish — it’s French. But how exactly language dynamics and etiquette work in the metropolis of French Canada isn’t remotely obvious if you’re new to the city. We hear a lot of questions: how French is Montreal, exactly? How much French do you need to move here? Do you need any French to visit? Is it rude to speak English to people? Let’s clear some things up. A few years ago, a concerned resident opposed a four-storey apartment on this site in their Edmonton neighbourhood by saying: “more apartments are economically unnecessary and actually unwanted by the community”. We know what it means when homeowners don’t want new housing nearby but what does it mean for an apartment building to be “economically unnecessary”? We would say that Miami isn’t what we expected but we actually didn’t really know what to expect from this city. We knew we wanted a break from Canadian winter and that we wanted a city we could explore a bit instead of going to a beach resort in the Caribbean. On the positive side, Miami has a very unique aesthetic and vibe. Spanish architecture, art deco, palm trees, cool skyscrapers, elevated rail, tropical colours — it’s really nice. We were even pleasantly surprised by the transit, especially for a place not known for it. On the negative side, this might be the most pedestrian-unfriendly major city we’ve ever walked around, definitely in recent memory. It’s the design of the roads, which feel like highways and sometimes literally are highways. It’s the oversized cars with tinted windows and drivers acting like pedestrians don’t matter. Florida is the third worst state in the US for pedestrian fatalities and it shows. This is the urbanist myth that just won’t die: the one very mistaken idea about housing and density held by a lot of well-meaning urbanists who we agree with on most other topics. We’re talking about the belief that roughly five storeys maximum is a universal “optimal” or “ideal” building height. This idea comes in large part from Danish designer and architect Jan Gehl, voted the second most influential urbanist in modern history, after Jane Jacobs. In his book Cities for People, he argued that taller buildings are out of scale with the human experience. “Above the fifth floor, offices and housing should logically be the province of the air-traffic authorities [...] they no longer belong to the city”, he claims. It sounds funny to say, but this bike lane was a big influence on this channel. When we first moved to Montreal in 2019 we lived nearby and saw the city take Saint-Denis Street, a six lane road that we would never consider biking on, and turn it into the busiest bike corridor in the city under the concept of an “express bike network” (REV in French) that includes a few other routes right now and will include many more routes in the future. The Saint Denis express bike corridor was a big lesson in “if you build it, they will come”, and the number of cyclists has only been climbing. What are the most urbanist neighbourhoods in Australia, the southern hemisphere version of Canada? Let’s take a look based on the 2021 Australian census. We’re going to measure urbanism based on three categories. First, population density — the denser the better. This isn’t to say that anyone into cities and urbanism must always prefer the highest density environments, but it’s the simplest way to compare. Number two: affordability. The cheaper the median rent, the better. And the third category is transportation, under which we’re including three separate measures: the percentage of people who commute by transit, the percentage of people who commute by walking or cycling, and the number of cars owned per household, with lower being better. The U.S. and Canada famously have a problem with the missing middle. Our cities have a lot of detached homes and in some cases a lot of high-rise towers but not a lot of housing in between. Or at least, so the argument goes. There’s just one problem: it’s not entirely true. Check out Cities: Skylines II at our link here: https://play.citiesskylines.com/OhTheUrbanity Montreal’s urban transformation to become less car-dominated and more livable is nothing short of amazing. By now everyone knows about the big examples like the very well-used express bike corridor on Saint-Denis or the lively car-free summer streets, but if you walk or bike around the city you’ll encounter dozens more changes, big and small, that have only happened over the past decade or so. The thing is, you might not know that the changes were new, and that the city wasn’t always like this. There’s a theory of housing that says the problem we’re facing is fundamentally not a lack of homes or restrictions on building and density. Instead, we face a scourge of investors who buy homes not to live in but to rent out, taking away options from aspiring home buyers and forcing them into renting. As one comment on our channel argued, “the investors are the prime cause of this housing crisis let's stop the gaslighting and verbal gymnastics”. What we really need, then, is to encourage homeownership and clamp down on investors who outbid first-time-homebuyers. “Take out the demand from investors and you have more than enough supply. Which drives costs down.”, according to another commenter on one of our videos. Well, clamping down on investors is exactly what Rotterdam in the Netherlands tried to do — here’s how it turned out. Something we don’t really understand is why Montreal pulls the plug on its wildly successful pedestrian streets so early, especially the extremely popular Mont-Royal Avenue, which starts to be taken down in early September. We see why the city’s cold and snowy winters are a particular challenge for pedestrian streets, requiring some creativity and planning if they’re going to work year round, but September and October are pretty nice and they seem like a no-brainer. But as we say goodbye to these lively linear parks, what exactly makes a good pedestrian street? Once you take cars off the road, how do you make the best of the space? Recently we made a video challenging the idea that North America is “doomed” and everyone who cares about urbanism needs to get out now and move to one of the European capitals of urban design. The video resonated pretty well but there was one response that really stood out: “wait a second, didn’t you guys abandon Ottawa for Montreal?”. Some people called us hypocrites for apparently jumping ship on a city when we told other people that they need to stay and fight. This was really surprising! There isn’t really a wrong way to explore cities, but when we visit a new city we do try to optimize for seeing as much of it as we can because we like to leave places feeling like we wouldn’t need to visit again, even though we might want to. People sometimes think of barriers and opposition to new housing construction as coming from a suburban culture of NIMBYism, but urban areas can be just as bad. The Dutch didn’t always have their bike paths, and it was just a few years ago that Paris used its riverbanks as highways. Some cities do start with more advantages when it comes to density or mixed-use neighbourhoods, but at the same time every city has a lot of latitude about what direction it wants to go. On this channel we talk a lot about the urbanism of Montreal, but Montreal wasn’t always like this either. Living here has been an exciting experience of seeing the city actively get better, and learning that features we took for granted didn’t even exist until surprisingly recently. In this video we’re going to showcase 9 urbanist transformations in Montreal that we haven’t given much attention to on this channel yet. Hong Kong is one of those places, alongside Singapore and Manhattan, that often gets cited as a failure of urbanism — an overdose of density, an example of what you don’t want your city to look like. But there’s a reason Hong Kong is like this, and why other cities probably won’t end up the same way. We should stop using Hong Kong as our density punching bag. What are the most “urbanist” cities in North America, the places you might gravitate to if you enjoy dense, lively, mixed-use neighbourhoods and not being required to drive? Subjective impressions are easy but building an objective ranking based on factors like density and transportation patterns is harder. In this video we’re going to score the top 10 urbanist cities in the U.S. and Canada using a method that we think lines up with how people actually experience their city, which is at the neighbourhood level. Are there really two kinds of cyclists? Urbanists and bike advocates often draw a sharp distinction between sporty recreational cyclists on one hand, who use their bikes for fun and exercise, and utility cyclists on the other hand, who use their bikes to get where they need to go, like work, school, groceries, or appointments. In this video we argue that the distinction isn't as clear as it might seem. Do the disasters of urban highways have anything to teach us about housing? We’re very critical of “not in my backyard” activists who fight against newer, denser housing development in their neighbourhoods, but stepping back, aren’t they just exhibiting the same spirit of grassroots citizen activism and skepticism of big change that led Jane Jacobs and others to fight to protect their neighbourhoods against the overreaches of urban highway master plans? In this video we’re going to explain the difference between highways and housing as we see it and why not all NIMBYism is created equal. Cities are fundamentally about living close to things you want, like jobs, schools, stores, services, and infrastructure, and that means living close to other people who want to access these amenities too. But cities and neighbourhoods vary enormously in density based on laws, geography, preferences, demographics, and historical development patterns. In this video we take a tour of population density in the U.S. and Canada, from semi-rural suburbs to ultra-dense downtowns. We usually talk about big cities on this channel — Toronto, Montreal, San Francisco, New York. But most of the same ideas about housing and transportation also apply to smaller cities too. In this video we take a look at Halifax, a smaller city in Atlantic Canada. Data note: As indicated in the video, most statistics from the census (on population or commuting) use "population centre" boundaries, previously called "urban area", for the city. These ignore city limits (e.g., the City of Toronto) and include all connected urban (and suburban) area. This is similar to a census metropolitan area or CMA, but it's not the same (CMAs group together multiple municipalities while population centres basically ignore municipal boundaries). Cities like New York, Toronto, London, and Sydney have extremely expensive housing not just because a lot of people want to live there — although that’s obviously true too — but because of dysfunctional housing policies that limit how much housing can be built. But given the unfortunate reality that these cities are very expensive, does it ever make financial sense to live in them? Are you crazy for trying to make it work instead of giving up and moving somewhere else with more reasonable housing costs? Discussions of urbanism often devolve into fights between "downtown living" and "suburban (or small town) living". This misses something big — most city-dwellers don't actually live "downtown". They live in dense residential neighbourhoods outside of downtown. We understand the aversion that many people have to "downtown living" because it can feel overwhelming, noisy, and crowded, but urban density does not have to be like that. It can actually be quite peaceful and calming. In this video, we cover our experiences based on living in older, denser parts of Toronto and Montreal. There aren't a lot of prominent critics of urbanism out there. Yes, lots of people argue against bike lanes, public transit, or housing density at city hall meetings, but relatively few people make their name in arguing for "suburbanist" approaches to housing and transportation. Randal O'Toole, also known as the Antiplanner, is one big exception. He takes urbanist beliefs about housing and transportation, flips them on their head, and argues for the exact opposite. In this video we explore some of his beliefs to try to see where he's coming from. There are a lot of compelling ideas out there about why we’re experiencing the current housing affordability crisis, and it can be easy to want some of these myths to be true. What Canadian cities lack in separated, on-street bike lanes they make up for in...multi-use pathways? While they have some downsides, like sometimes being too narrow and not leading to useful destinations, multi-use pathways are still, in many cities, the gem of the bike network. People don't usually pay attention to Canada, let alone its capital city of Ottawa. This was upended over the past few weeks as protests over public health measures took over the downtown of the city, centred around a primary site on Wellington Street in front of Parliament but also extending into shopping, office, and residential districts. Ottawa is no stranger to protests, being the capital, but this one was uniquely disruptive because of how long it lasted and because of how vehicles were used. You don’t come to this channel to hear us talk about news or politics though, so as this surreal experience comes to a close, we want to talk about some observations on the event from an urbanist perspective. There’s a common refrain we hear often regarding people who rent or own apartment-sized units—that they secretly, deep down, want a single family detached house, and they would buy one if they could afford it. We take a look at that theory in this video through the lens of costs and trade-offs, and explain why, while many people do aspire to single family homes, that’s not the case for everyone, and there really are good reasons to prefer a smaller living space for all the advantages you gain from living in a vibrant urban centre. Due to induced traffic, building or expanding roads and highways doesn't help to reduce congestion very much, if at all, over the long-run. Based on this, some people have asked us whether building more housing might not actually help affordability like you would expect. In this video we dive into the research on housing supply to find that it really does help housing affordability. We also discuss some of the differences between housing and roads that make it easier for the supply of housing to keep up with demand than for the supply of roads to keep up with (car) demand. In this video, we take a look at a new study (linked below) from Montreal on how much road space is dedicated to cars, bikes, pedestrians, and transit. In this video we address more of the bad arguments against bike infrastructure we've encountered, including some that came up very often in response to our last video. 1. Canada, the U.S., and Australia are big countries with low population densities. How can cycling be practical? 2. You should stop the “social engineering” of forcing bikes onto cities. People just want to drive. 3. Cyclists don’t have the right to road space because they don’t get a license or registration. 4. Cyclists don’t need dedicated infrastructure; they should learn to share the road with cars and trucks. 5. Cyclists don’t need dedicated infrastructure; they should just bike on the sidewalk. If there’s anything we’ve learned following urban planning and city politics it’s that questioning the role of cars in cities really strikes a nerve. Policies like bike lanes, pedestrian streets, transit priority, and traffic calming are dismissed as a war waged against suburbanites and their cars by people who live downtown. In this video we question whether this view of the debate really makes sense. Induced demand (probably more accurately called induced traffic) is the phenomenon where building or expanding roads and highways doesn't help congestion because it results in more people driving. This is often used as an argument against building the new car infrastructure, but people don't talk often about how induced demand applies to other modes. In this video we explain why induced demand does apply to transit, walking, and cycling infrastructure, but with different consequences. People often hold up cycling success stories like Copenhagen or Amsterdam to argue for more bike infrastructure here in North America. That's great, and there's a lot we can learn from those places, but they're also easier for people to dismiss as irrelevant because they seem so unrelatable—"maybe cycling works there, but we have a different culture, climate, and landscape here in North America". Fortunately, we also have cycling success stories here in North America too. They're more modest, but they're very real and harder to ignore. In this video we look at how bike commuting grew in Toronto from 1996 to 2016. Do you prefer living in a detached home or a condo/apartment tower? That's how most of us in North America think about housing options, but as it turns out, there are lots of intermediate options that could be built. It's called the "missing middle" and it can balance advantages of higher and lower density living. Montreal, as an older city in North America with different architectural influences, is an excellent example of a city that retains this "missing middle" housing and in fact actively builds more of it. In this video we profile five different missing middle neighbourhoods in Montreal to see how to achieve density on a low-rise scale. North American suburbs are not just the result of people's preferences. To a large extent, they're mandated by government rules and regulations. Montreal isn't the only city to implement a long and direct bike route over a major transit line recently. In this video we explore Toronto's Bloor–Danforth Bikeway, which actually has a special place in our heart because a pilot project of this corridor back in 2016 played a pretty big role in us becoming comfortable biking in cities. You'll find some weird bike infrastructure in Toronto on Roncesvalles Avenue, which has intermittent "bike lanes" that only show up near transit stops. Not only does this easily create conflicts between cyclists and transit users, after the bike lane ends you're thrown onto the street in a way that's hard to predict or see from the perspective of a driver. 2009 (when these were put in) was not a good year for bike lanes in Toronto. It's the first weekend of spring and winter is over—or is it? On this short bike trip we visit Longueuil, on Montreal's south shore, and do battle with the last remnants of winter. Longueuil is close to Montreal, just across the Jacques-Cartier Bridge, and it has an enjoyable older downtown to spend some time in before heading further up the Saint Lawrence. Snow removal is one of the most interesting and impressive parts of winter in Montreal. This city gets 210 cm of snow each year on average, which is almost double Toronto and five times as much as Vancouver. This requires a massive, synchronized operation to not just clear snow from streets but actually remove snow from neighbourhoods. Montreal has some of North America's best cycling infrastructure, but it also has harsh winters. In this video we combine statistics on cycling volumes with historical weather data to better understand how cycling in Montreal changes over the course of the year (and based on the weather). Due to missing data (weather or cycling numbers), the analysis was able to look at 1,544 of the 1,826 total days in the five year period of 2015 to 2019. The cycling data is available at: https://donnees.montreal.ca/ville-de-montreal/velos-comptage The weather data is available from Environment Canada under Historical Data: https://climate.weather.gc.ca/historical_data/search_historic_data_e.html The weather station chosen was St-Hubert airport in Longueuil, just outside of Montreal. The title says it all—a unique, must-do bike trip for anyone exploring Montreal. Starting at a Formula 1 racetrack and ending at a beach, this path follows a narrow strip of land in the Saint Lawrence River and gives impressive views of the Montreal skyline. On the way back, you can follow the same path or follow Quebec's Route Verte (Green Route) series of separated bike paths through surrounding suburbs to return to Montreal over the Champlain bridge. Note: In the video we said you can continue on the Petite Voie du Fleuve past RécréoParc, but we've since learned that this part of the path is closed unless you have authorization. Housing in Montreal is different from other parts of Canada. Specifically, the city of Montreal features plexes of various sizes that create dense and livable neigbourhoods and that make walking, biking and using public transit the easy choice. Apart from creating lively neighbourhoods, this style of housing also means renting an apartment is more affordable to the average person. Finally, Montreal housing is architecturally interesting and unique, offering features like spiral staircases and balconies. Let's travel Quebec by bike! This video covers our cycling trip from Montreal to Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu on Quebec's Route Verte (Green Route). The first leg of our trip was a 17km ride to Parc de la Cité in the suburb of Longueuil. Parc de la Cité has picnic tables, a water bottle filling station, and outhouses available to the public. The second leg of the trip followed the Route Verte for another 13km to Chambly, a city of about 30,000. Chambly is quite tourist-oriented with lots of shops, restaurants, and boat rentals and is home to the start of the Chambly Canal and Fort Chambly, both National Historic Sites of Canada. Chambly's waterfront also offers a nice view of Mont Saint-Hilaire. The third leg of the trip followed the Chambly Canal for another 18km to the final destination, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is a less tourist-oriented city but still interesting to see, with a train running through the centre and an Oasis-themed public space set up downtown. Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu usually has a hot air balloon festival that takes place in August, but it was cancelled this year due to the pandemic. Montreal is Canada's largest French-speaking city, but is it a good place to learn French? This video discusses the pros and cons of choosing Montreal as a French-language learner. We'll get to the bottom of exactly how French the city is, and compare it to other places in Quebec on language, employment, and amenities. All of the figures presented come from the 2016 census. When cities are mentioned, the figures are for the census metropolitan area (CMA). Bilingualism rates for anglophones were calculated by comparing the number of people whose first official language is English to the number of people who currently only have knowledge of English.
