The quick way to make new pedestrian plazas

Tell us about a pedestrian plaza in the US here: https://forms.gle/gvZKyjWKaGbNoPS3A I’m on Patreon! Consider supporting this channel: https://www.patreon.com/citybeautiful Cities across the United States have developed programs to close streets to cars and turn them into pedestrian plazas. For example, LA’s People Street program was created by the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) in 2014. Closing off sections of underutilized streets and refocusing them as hubs for community activities has allowed the City of Los Angeles to expand their walkable spaces which were previously filled with vehicle traffic. Moreover, these pedestrian spaces provide vibrant places for people to interact. This video tours some notable pedestrian plazas from programs in New York, Boston, Seattle, and Atlanta. Where did the rules of the road come from?

CFgqNiFi0cw | 20 Feb 2020

Where did the rules of the road come from?

The right of way concept is perhaps the most fundamental building block of modern traffic control. It’s hard to imagine how any of us would get from point “A” to point “B” without a system of rules telling us when to yield so others may go on ahead of them. And it seems natural to us that some of these rules should be communicated by signs and symbols on the pavement or roadside. For most of human history, though, that idea made no sense at all. In fact, before the rise of the automobile, the worlds highways were practically empty of laws telling us how to move. The idea that you have a right to move forward at one point in the road and a duty to stop at another was all but unheard of. This video presents the historical context for the rise of the right of way concept and is based on research by UC Berkeley Collaborative Science Center for Road Safety (CSCRS) Fellow Eva Vaillancourt. Please visit the UC Berkeley SafeTREC CSCRS webpage to view the extended abstract, “The Right of Way: Making Rules for Movement on British Roads, 1896-1930”: https://safetrec.berkeley.edu/programs/collaborative-sciences-center-road-safety-cscrs Funding for this video was provided by the Collaborative Sciences Center for Road Safety (CSCRS), a National University Transportation Center supporting the FAST Act research priority of promoting safety. Perhaps unsurprisingly, most of the time I was designing and building cities. When I asked for sets for Christmas, or eventually saved up my own money to buy one, it was usually from the Lego City theme. Now that I’m a city planner, when I see Lego city sets I often wonder what kind of city you could make out of them. Would the city be any good? What kind of urbanism would it be? So come join me as I get a little nerdy discussing Lego sets from the perspective of a city planner. All Lego images are copyright Lego. Produced by Dave Amos in sunny Sacramento, California. But they’re not perfect. Cars and delivery trucks will block them. Sometimes drivers open their doors into the bike lane without looking. And they don’t feel safe enough for most people. If we want more people to bike, we have to build better bike infrastructure, and the good news is that this is starting to happen here in the US, believe it or not. (2004) “Transportation and Urban Form: Stages in the Spatial Evolution of the American Metropolis”, in S. Hanson and G. Giuliano (eds) The Geography of Urban Transportation, 3rd Edition, New York: Guilford, pp. 59-84. How do cities grow? On the surface, this question has a pretty simple answer. Cities grow out. They start out small, and as more people move in, they get bigger. Sure, cities grow up, too, but here in the United States cities really grow out. But there’s more to it than that. Cities grow out faster now than they did 150 years ago. And they don’t always grow evenly out from the center. Why? Produced in sunny Sacramento, California.

How New York improved its electric grid after Sandy

This video is sponsored by Siemens. I'm on Patreon! Consider supporting this channel: https://www.patreon.com/citybeautiful Now it’s pretty much expected that big storms might result in power outages, but with big storms like Sandy happening more frequently and climate change exacerbating storm surges, power outages are going to be more frequent and more widespread. Electricity is essential the rescue effort, for repairing and rebuilding after a major storm. Many of the buildings in lower Manhattan remained flooded for days because there was no power for the pumps. So what can be done to make a city’s electrical infrastructure more resilient in the face of more powerful and more frequent storms? How would New York fare if another Sandy made landfall today? A. It’s based on a US Senate report in 1974 that detailed General Motors’ takeover of the Pacific Electric Railroad, the company that ran Los Angeles’ streetcars. GM replaced the streetcars with buses and the removal of the streetcars paved the way for LA’s famous freeways. That’s the story, anyway. But did it really happen that way? What’s the real story? A. Plenty of cities offer free transit to students and seniors. Some systems offer free transit in designated zones or on certain routes. Others, like Seoul (2), offer free transit on days where the air is too smoggy. Only a few cities have gone all the way and done what I’m proposing: free transit for everyone, everywhere, at all times. An Ode to Street Trees

I'm on Patreon! Consider supporting this channel: https://www.patreon.com/citybeautiful I live in Sacramento, and when I moved here I learned two things quickly. First, Sacramento summers are hot. Like really hot. Many days are over 100 degrees. The second thing I learned is that Sacramento is livable, even with those high temperatures, thanks to its extensive tree canopy. The trees provide shade that makes me feel about 10-15 degrees cooler, and without them I probably would’ve moved a long time ago. Shade is just one of the many many benefits trees provide in urban areas, and I’m going to count down my favorites, as well talk about what it takes to maintain a verdant urban forest. Are tech workers ruining San Francisco?

I'm on Patreon! Consider supporting this channel: https://www.patreon.com/citybeautiful Since the 1990s, the tech industry in Silicon Valley has grown and many of those workers own or rent here in San Francisco. Longtime residents are being priced out and teachers, nurses, and police officers are struggling to live in the city. Do we need futuristic tunnels? | Elon Musk and The Boring Company

I have a Patreon! If you want to support City Beautiful, consider becoming a patron: http://www.patreon.com/citybeautiful On Friday, Elon Musk tweeted: “Adjusting The Boring Company plan. All tunnels and hyper loop will prioritize pedestrians and cyclists over cars. Will still transport cars, but only after all personalized mass transit needs are met. It’s a matter of courtesy and fairness. If someone can’t afford a car, they should go first.” his is a shift from his original plan, where cars would be the primary vehicle traveling through underground tunnels in urban areas. That plan had received lots of criticism from transit advocates and planners. What does this planner think of Elon’s change of course? Stay tuned to find out. Hosting the Olympics is Broken. Let's Fix It.

Hosting the Olympics is Broken. Let's Fix It.

Hosting the Olympics is an expensive proposition. Cost varies according to hosts, but even a games on a tight budget like London cost $10 billion dollars, though that’s nothing compared to the $44 billion dollar price tag for Beijing’s games or $51 billion dollars for Sochi. Olympic boosters will say the costs are worth it, while skeptics will say the money and effort is better spent directly helping its citizens. I’m going to discuss some of the tradeoffs associated with hosting the Olympics and tell you why I think only six cities should host the games from here on out: Calgary, Rio, Turin, Cape Town, PyeongChang, and Sydney. Disney World's Private Government

Walt Disney World Resort is huge — it consists of four theme parks, 27 hotels with 21 thousand rooms, over 30 thousand parking spaces, shopping, water parks, and all of the backstage areas needed to run such a massive operation. Walt Disney World is set on 27,000 acres in central Florida — roughly the size of the city of San Francisco. It’s also the most visited resort in the world. It’s impressive size and record setting visitor attendance are amazing. For sure. But what might be even more amazing, particularly if you are a city planning nerd like me, is the special district that grants the company unprecedented powers over its land and municipal services. Train stations are making a comeback. But why?

In Denver and cities across the United States, historic train stations are getting a new lease on life. Many are anchoring downtown redevelopment projects as well. Why did we build high-rise public housing projects?

Why did we build high-rise public housing projects?

In the spring of 2007, the Chicago Housing Authority demolished the last of the 28 buildings in the Robert Taylor Homes housing project. Robert Taylor Homes is one of several high profile housing project demolitions, from St. Louis’s Pruitt-Igoe to fellow Chicago project Cabrini Green. The demolitions serve as an admission that high-rise public housing wasn’t a good idea. The housing that replaced them are all low rise projects better integrated within existing neighborhoods. So why did anyone back then think it was a good idea? Why did housing authorities build these high rise projects in the first place? Resources on this topic: Hunt, D. B. (2001). Residential streets are too wide. Here's why.

Residential streets are too wide. Here's why.

In many places in the United States, residential streets were as wide as busy city streets. I understand why urban streets might need to be wide — parking, buses, traffic, and bike lanes all need the room. But why do quiet residential streets need to be so wide? Why do they need parking when all of the houses on the streets have garages and driveways? Why do they need wide lanes when most of the traffic is just cars and minivans? Why are we building residential streets as wide as big city streets? Resources on this topic: I based this video on my Master's thesis, which my advisor and I turned into a book chapter. Why don't more U.S. cities have metro systems like New York?

The subway was my favorite part of living New York. The New York subway has more stations than any other metro system in the world (472), meaning I could just pop up just about anywhere in the city and live there entirely without a car. It was great. When I moved away, I couldn’t help but wonder — why do so few U.S. cities have subways? How did smart growth become politically divisive?

I do three things in this video. First - I explain what Agenda 21 REALLY is. Second, I describe smart growth, the city planning concept that Agenda 21 promotes. And finally, I give you my explanation for why smart growth became tangled in a conspiracy theory that also relates to climate change denial and fears of a one world government. Urban Sprawl: Which U.S. City Sprawls the Most?

Urban sprawl — we’ve all seen it — the strip malls, residential subdivisions, clogged streets. But which U.S metro area sprawls the most? Is it Los Angeles, a city built around the car? Or is it another sunbelt city like Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Antonio, or Atlanta? Resources on this topic: Ewing, R., Pendall, R., & Chen, D. (2003). Measuring Sprawl and Its Transportation Impacts. The Alaskan Way Viaduct: How Seattle chose the Bertha tunnel alternative

The Alaskan Way Viaduct: How Seattle chose the Bertha tunnel alternative

In April of 2017, Bertha, the massive tunnel-boring machine successfully completed digging a nearly 2 mile deep-bore tunnel under Seattle. The tunnel will carry traffic from the Alaskan Way Viaduct, which had been damaged and deemed seismically unsafe after an earthquake. The tunnel will be much less intrusive than the wall-like Viaduct structure, which cuts Seattle off from its waterfront, and the tunnel, new surface street, and transit will take care of the Viaduct’s 110,000 vehicles per day.Why did Seattle move the highway from above ground to below ground? What we're the replacement options considered? How did Seattle settle on the deep bore tunnel, one of the most expensive options possible, as a replacement for the Viaduct? What was that process like? Savannah's mysterious historic plan

MbyuNHCDdNM | 13 Apr 2017

Savannah's mysterious historic plan

There’s an ongoing mystery that planners and urban historians have been trying to solve for over 100 years. How did an amateur planner forego centuries of established city design and implement a pattern that resulted in one of the most charming, walkable historic centers in the U.S.? For many, it’s just too hard to believe that he designed it out of thin air — there must’ve been an obvious precedent. Scholars have been searching for this precedent to solve this mystery since the 1800s. Why do so many U.S. cities have gridded streets?

Many U.S. cities were founded with a street grid. Why? This video describes the historic factors that contributed to the adoption of a grid. This includes influential city designs from Versailles, London, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, and Reno.
