Sounds like something from a sci-fi movie but some cars actually use LEP technology: Laser Excited Phosphor. In this video, I take a closer look at one of these headlamps. After figuring out how to light it up without destroying the laser diode, I measure how strong the used laser is. Can you guess how strong it is? I was surprised! Can a Class 1 laser remove hair? I was faced with this question when I found an old hair removal laser in a thrift shop. It is labeled as class 1 - the safest of all laser classes. Being sceptical, I bought the laser and will in this video test its wavelength on a spectrometer and its power on a laser power meter. Can you guess how strong it is? And is it a safe class 1? Time to power up my most expensive lamp. Due to a wrong delivery, I have three power options to choose between. In this video, I test and compare how well they light up the low-pressure sodium-vapor Philips SOX 135W lamp. Which is better? The ballasts BSX 91, BSX 135 or the leak transformer L4135? One of them is not really meant for a 135W lamp, but it is the most modern and perhaps the best option? Let's find out in the most comprehensive test I have ever performed! Why does a flicker-flame lamp flicker? And why is the beautiful gas discharge not taking the shortcut between the closely spaced electrodes? In an attempt to figure out how such a specialized light bulb works, I will test my only flicker-flame lamp. One that seems faulty, but still turns out to be stunning when slowed way down. Having efficient light bulbs is great. It saves energy which gives you lower electricity bills and lower impact on the environment. So why have we stopped using the very energy-efficient low-pressure sodium vapor lamps? In this video, I take a closer look at this vintage technology and compare it to modern, state-of-the-art LEDs. Handheld, yellow lasers do not exist. That is my experience after I last year tried three that were advertised to emit some shade of yellow. None of them looked yellow to me... In this video, I give it another try. Can I fill the yellow gap between red and green with a new laser that should emit a wavelength right between the ones I have tested to be closest to yellow? Is it true yellow? How powerful is it? What is its true wavelength? How does it work? Will my camera recording in RGB (red green blue) even film it right? Let's find out! Welcome to what may very well be the most informative video on yellow lasers online. Simply because there aren't many yellow lasers around - making videos about them even rarer... After 25+ years of collecting lasers, I finally should have some too. Two new colors, supposed to be 561 nm and 591 nm, in the yellow gap between red and green. I will test their color (wavelength in nm) and power output. Are they as specified? Are they even yellow? This may depend on the eyes of the beholder. What do you think? Time to beat my all-time laser power record! The latest and largest LaserCube should be the strongest laser I have ever tested. I will use a laser power meter and spectrometer to hopefully verify its specs. I will also open it up to see its inner workings and figure out the laser beam paths inside it. Quite complicated! This also means I can include instructions on how to open it up - for example to change the rechargeable battery after years of use. Perhaps the first time this has been published? Anyway, this was meant as something special to celebrate reaching 750,000 subscribers! Thank you so much! Why must halogen lamps always be used with a piece of glass in front of them? Because they are hot to the touch running hotter than ordinary incandescent bulbs? Yes, but the heat causes other, less obvious, even invisible issues that you need to be aware of. Issues that the glass protects you against. In this video, I take a closer look at them. I have always wondered how the inexpensive magnetizer-demagnetizer tool works. What's inside it? And why are there stairs inside the demagnetizer opening? According to most sources the stairs are important, but the explanations are vague at best. In this video, I will do some investigation and open the tool to finally figure out how it really works! And show how you don't need the tool if you have a bar magnet... Lasers are just getting stronger and stronger, but sometimes you want to lower the laser beam's power. For example when measuring beam divergence or setting up an optical system safely. I wonder what the best and easiest way to lower a laser's power output is? I have used an ND filter earlier, but it is not without issues. Could I simply switch to rechargeable batteries in stead of alkalines? They have 20% lower voltage after all. And how well does my ND filter work in reality? Like specified? I will also demonstrate how to test the strength of an unlabelled, mystery filter. The grade of a magnet is important. It tells you how strong the magnetic material used for the magnet is. The higher the grade, the more expensive and powerful the magnet. However, measuring the grade is not easy. I have successfully tested it on 70x20 mm disc magnets, but what about my largest magnets: the monstrous Ø200x50 and Ø150x100 mm disc magnets? Let's find out! If you use high-powered lasers it is not necessarily enough to use safety goggles. Especially Class IV lasers need some extra attention: a beam dump to stop the beam and the reflections from the laser dot. In this video I show you how to make one and I test it using lasers up to 1500 mW. An easy and inexpensive build that will be a major safety upgrade for your laser collection. Green lasers have both advantages and disadvantages. For safety reasons I have so far focused on telling about the possible infrared leakage from some types of green lasers. To a point where it seems like I wouldn't recommend green lasers at all... But I do! They have a big advantage that makes them awesome and maybe even safer to use than other lasers: lumens. I explain how in this video. Is it possible to measure the grade of a magnet? Even if you 'only' have a gaussmeter? It is interesting to know, since neodymium magnets are expensive and it would be nice to know, if you get what you pay for. In this video I attempt to confirm the grade on some magnets before trying to determine the grade of a questionable, cheap N52 magnet. Time goes by so fast. I uploaded my first video in March 2009, and here we are 10 years later. Thousands of hours put into making videos, but man has it been worth it. It is a pleasure to make these videos, share them with you, get your feedback for good or for worse and just grow for every video. This video features clips from most of my videos for the first 10 years. I wonder how many of you remember them all... Thanks to all who have made this epic journey possible for me: viewers, subscribers, commenters, patrons, sponsors, donators, collaborators, subtitlers, license granters, musicians (especially Kevin MacLeod), coworkers, friends and family for their patience with me, YouTube's staff and all I may have forgotten over 10 years. Never realized how much this would change my life for the better. Thank you all very much. In some clips you shortly see donated products: Magnets, ferrofluid and magnetic dough from supermagnete.de. Big magnets from magnetportal.de. Compressor from implotex.de. The server guy is Morten Hjorth from My Playhouse. Never thought I would unbox a magnet bigger than my monster 6x2", but technology is evolving and I love following along. Luckily, magnetportal.de was kind enough to donate the magnets featured in this video. They are not cheap! The biggest one alone contains around 3 kg of the rare earth metal neodymium. Here's where you can find the magnets and a lot of smaller ones: https://www.magnetportal.de/neodym-magnet-magnete-scheibe-gross-ab-30mm/a-873/ The website is German, but I have communicated with them in English and Chrome can translate the website to your language, so don't let it stop you. Wanna try ferrofluid yourself but don't want to pay the premium price? In this video I show you how to make your own very easily and cheaply! I couldn't get the common DIY recipes found online to work well but in desperation found another way through my own experiments. I call it ferripaste since it isn't as fluid as the commercial stuff - but that only makes it even more interesting to play with. It will behave in a more varying ways to a magnet than just spikes like the ferrofluid. Hope you can use it to make you own amazing ferripaste experiments :) FULL MUSIC CREDITS Timestamp: 0:01 Immersed - Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ ISRC: USUAN1600010 Timestamp: 0:40 4:18 9:55 Perspectives - Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ ISRC: USUAN1300027 Timestamp: 7:40 Fluidscape - Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ ISRC: USUAN1100393 Timestamp: 11:20 Peace of Mind - Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ ISRC: USUAN1200099 Also includes royalty-free music mixed together using Triune Scores: Trailer Pack Vol 1 and Triune Scores: Cinema Toast Crunch Vol 1

Another original video that I don't think anyone else would make... I have collected quite a few standard neodymium magnets, but these ones come with a story I had to tell. Thorned spikes? This time my 6x2" neodymium magnet meets something unusual, a magnetic fluid. The Macho Set from supermagnete is a unique set. So I'm not surprised you wanted to see a video about it :) Available here, but only for European shipping: https://sumag.net/mag-sets-x01 Is a similar set available for US shipping? Please let me know and I'll add a link here (and probably buy the set and make a video about it...). So far I've only been told about this little set: http://www.supermagnetman.net/product_info.php?cPath=59&products_id=431&osCsid=36d1ec06a3c3ced51768b26e9cdef150 Not a competitor for the Macho Set, but the small magnets could make a good starter set. Neodymium magnets are so powerful that you should watch this before buying one. I give guidelines for size, shape, grade and coating. In this way you hopefully will have a good start with a nice beginner magnet. Lin to video with the Macho Set: https://youtu.be/Dh1S9kgz6aw Link to detailed safety sheet: https://www.supermagnete.de/eng/safety.pdf Link to shown sample sets (European shipping only): https://sumag.net/mag-sets-x01 I have no personal experiences with magnet webshops outside Europe. For US/Canada it seems that http://www.magnet4less.com has the best selection at very fair prices. I haven't found any sample sets in their webshop though. Another cheap source for neo magnets are scrapped hard disk drives. It can be tricky to open the drives though and the magnets are specialized. Glow-in-the-dark. How does it work? In this video I show a bunch of phosphorescent samples and explain the difference between fluorescence and phosphorescence. Link to my video about fluorescence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blv1KxYLhc0 If you are interested in more you should search for chromium-activated zinc gallogermanate (Zn3Ga2Ge2O10 : 0.5%Cr3+). They glow invisble in near infrared but can glow for up to two weeks in the dark! Hopefully the scientists will invent something similar that glow in the visible range for so long. I would definitely pay well for a phosphor that could glow on my watch for such a long time. Ions of uranium, europium, neodymium, terbium and lots of other stuff can fluoresce. In this video I show a lot of them and also try to explain in simple terms how it works. Full music credit: Kevin MacLeod www.incompetech.com All under CC license. Tracks used: 0:30 - 0:50 3:03 - 3:43 4:59 - 5:15 'Darkness is Coming' ISRC: USUAN1100584 1:53 - 2:08 'Night Cave' ISRC: USUAN1100446 4:30 - 4:58 'Bathed in the Light' ISRC: USUAN1100308 Bonus info: I use a generic 18 watt longwave UV-blacklight in this video - not the dangerous shortwave UV even though it could give even better results. Lots of the stuff can be bought on eBay, like Onyx Metall http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/onyxmetall The little test tube with quinine in the beginning is a sample of tonic water that I tried to boil down to concentrate the quinine more. It didn't work out well - lots of sugar in the drink so it just turns into a brown syrup and doesn't really fluoresce more. Be careful with most of the stuff in the video. Always search for the MSDS for a chemical before you buy it. Especially Rhodamine B is dangerous and can ruin your eyes - wear safety glasses and gloves or even better: stay away from it. The radioactive minerals also needs to be treated with respect. It is often the outer most electrons that can be excited - the valence electrons. In the rare earth metals it can happen with inner electrons though - like in neodymium. All the europium samples are europium oxide. I believe the LEGO pieces are not only fluorescent but also so-called LISA plastic. LISA is short for 'licht-sammeln' which is German for 'light-gathering'. It is plastic with high internal reflection so the light is transmitted inside the plastic and send out of the edges - like optical fiber cables. But LEGO likes to keep their secrets so it's just my guess. Almost all transparent LEGOs are made of polycarbonate - which LISA plastic also can be. Normal LEGO is made of ABS.

Can metals be melted in hot water or just by the heat of a human hand? Some can and in this video I melt a bunch of them! Here's where I bought the samples if you are interested in trying this yourself: (it's much better in real life than on video ;) www.crystalgrowing-shop.com (German site, most is available on eBay too) - Rose's metal - Wood's metal - Bi-Pb-In-Sn-Cd (in rare cases called French's metal) www.smart-elements.com - cesium - gallium in vacuum ampoule www.eBay.com - gallium - Field's metal The mercury is from antique mercury thermometers. Link to the Hg-Tl pictures I use with written permission: http://www.periodictable.ru/081Tl/Tl_en.html If you are interested in elements you should check out the rest of his website. His thorium sample is the best I have ever seen! There are only few sources about the very specialized Na-K-Cs alloy. I have since the making of this video found another source that mentions these compositions and melting points: 12% Na, 47% K, 41% Cs = Melting point -78 C 3% Na, 24% Na, 73% Cs = Melting point -76 C So no doubt that Na-K-Cs is the metallic alloy with the lowest melting point at around -78 C, but the exact composition is a bit of a mystery... I definitely need to redo the rare earth metals from part one with the scale! ~The long clips with no magnetic reactions are quite boring... = I've kept the clips shorter this time and actually bombard you with information. You may need to pause sometimes in this video or watch it several times to catch it all :) ~You should color-code the elements in the periodic table after their magnetic properties. = Done! Green to red means the element is attracted to a magnet with increasing intensity. Blue means the element is repelling a magnet. ~Where did you buy that element and how much? = I don't really like when my videos turns into commercials but since this is the most common question I have included the data in this video. Here's my submission to Bionerd23's contest for Chernobyl souvenirs. This was a special challenge to me because I usually spend months on brainstorming, filming, editing, recording voiceover, spell-checking, re-shooting, crashes in my video-editor, close-captions and so on before I have a video ready for polishing before the final upload... The contest was announced 21. nov. 2012 and the submission should be uploaded before 2. dec. 2012. My first thought was that with my pace I would never make something useful in such a short time so why bother. But I took the challenge because it's about an interesting subject and kept it short. So here it is. A little messy and with some easy or half solutions but overall I'm pleased with the outcome considering that I only had a week to come up with ideas and film/edit the whole thing while still taking care of my dayjob and the Christmas dinners that have already begun in Denmark... The video should 'be creative about nuclear physics'. I've always had an interest in radioactivity although it's considered controversial by many people. People usually turn dead serious about this subject because radioactivity only reminds them of cancer and death. But those are the extreme cases from extreme doses. There are other sides to radioactivity that I try to show in this video in a... less serious way... I tried to put some humour, unusual twists and an unpretentious feel into the subject in the most creative way I could come up with (bording to madness...). I hope to win one of the Chernobyl items that really would fit in my collection of radioactivity. It is such a remarkable piece of radioactive history: a tourist souvenir from Chernobyl. I doubt we will see the same with Fukushima in twenty years? Should I win I would prefer to receive: 1) baseball cap, SIGNED on top of the stiff eyeshade 2) black shirt size large 3) fridge magnet, 'yellow' Thanks to Bionerd23 for giving us all a chance to win the items and of course for the educational and interesting videoes about radioactivity and The Zone's unseen areas. I have had request for showing my collection of neodymium magnets. I had trouble figuring out how this could be done in an interesting video. It also gives me a chance to show that bigger isn't necessary better - at least not worth the extra price for all applications. Closed captions in English are available.

Eddy currents are a fascinating phenomenon that can be used for some stunning experiments. In this video I try to show a variety of experiments utilizing eddy currents. My imagination is limited so feel free to comment with other experiments that you have tried yourself. I probably should warn the ones that invests in copper bullions: Copper is a soft metal and the nickel coating on the neodymium magnets will easily scratch the copper! I don't mind the scratches since the copper bars were bought specifically for magnet experiments. I bought the copper on eBay.de. The large one was around 80€ (100$). This is a video focusing on the little detail of putting a spacer between magnets or not. I highly recommend using a spacer - as the magnet factories also do when delivering large quantities of magnets to the retailers. In this video I try to show why.

I believe this video is unique. I haven't found a video on YouTube showing so many different metals and their effect with magnets. I dream of getting all the available elemental metals and make updates for this video series. I have had quite a lot feedback suggesting that I should have put the magnet on a string or scale so smaller effects would be visualized. I use this in newer parts of this series: Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gB775y4FbE Part 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-ex-CAjQhY Part 4: https://youtu.be/I2pmV_jjC7c Part 5: https://youtu.be/sJ_SIOxMZ9E Part 6: https://youtu.be/Z63TdhDyWGo I may at some point redo this video with more sensitive setups, but with 41 metals it is quite a large project :| Music is by Kevin MacLeod from http://www.incompetech.com. This video is part of my series on how to handle neodymium magnets safely. This is a more advanced lesson on how to make a matrix of magnets with the poles in a checkerboard pattern. This is what you need to make a piece of diamagnetic pyrolytic graphite levitate. I will also give you some hints on how to take the matrix apart again. Here are the captions in case the combination of my lousy microphone and danish accent is hard to understand (also available: danish and english closed captions - just press the CC button under the video): Hello there, this video is part of my series on how to handle neodymium magnets safely. In this video I am showing you how to safely put together magnets with the poles in a checkerboard pattern that is suitable for levitation. What you see is pyrolytic graphite being repelled by four neodymium magnets. So let's start with some tiny ones. These can be arranged by hand alone but don't for a second think they are weak. Just one of these will hold over a kilogram of iron. The only tool I recommend for these tiny magnets is this simple locking-board. The iron plates underneath locks the loose magnets in place - or at least dampens the acceleration when putting the magnets together. These thin magnets are very fragile and will easily break if just thrown together. Alright. Here's the checkerboard pattern of north and south poles I am going to make. Let's go ahead and take the first magnet of the stack and place it on the locking board. The next magnet you need to turn 180 degrees before putting it on. The poles of the magnets can't face in the same direction since only opposites attracts. Continue doing this and remember to turn every second magnet upside down. There you go... And now just some hints for restacking the magnets without breaking them. OK - what you've seen so far may be basic to most of you so let me raise the ante. These are tricky little bastards. They are just the size where they don't look impressive like a huge one in some of my other videos but these will draw blood if you get pinched by them. Who said nerds don't work out? :) I have marked the north poles on these cube magnets with dots around the edges so I always know which two surfaces are the poles. Let's build a checkerboard: take the first magnet of the stack using a splitter tool. Put the magnet on the locking board with one of the pole surfaces pointing upwards. For the next magnet you need a large wedge to slide the two magnets safely together. Remember to turn the next magnet upside down so you've got opposite poles attracting each other. I will make a 3x3 pattern so let me just put another one on - mind the poles. Repeat until you have three of these 3x1 bars. Remember to keep them far apart so they don't smash together. Take one of the bars and mind the poles. Take the next bar and put it upside down on the locking board following the rule of attraction between opposite poles. Bring the bars together with the wedge in between and make sure the bars are aligned. Finish the project with the last bar. There you have it: nine powerful magnets put together with no loss of blood. And here's what they can do. Now for some hints on how I restack them. As always: Mind the poles... Bye bye for now.

In this video I fool a little around with the Ferrari of handheld lasers: Laserglow Hercules. I have the 400+ mW version which peaks at 489.6 mW and average 424.8 mW over 10 minutes. The prize on this has dropped A LOT since I bought it second hand 3-4 years ago. Current prize as new is 1389$ (August 2011). It used to be 2989$... And speaking of fun: in this video we're gonna fool around with the Laserglow Hercules-400. Just for size comparison: here's your standard Mag-Lite®-copy flashlight for 3 D-sized batteries and a Mag-Lite® flashlight for 4 D-sized batteries and here's the Hercules laser. No, no, behave Hercules! You big bully :) Sorry about that. Here's what I wanted to show you. The Hercules is larger than a flashlight with 4 D-sized batteries. With over 400 milliwatt the beam is very visible even without smoke or fog in the air. Here it's in daylight inside at night and in the darkness. Well - it's never really dark with a Hercules turned on. With a little smoke in the air the beam is way to bright for the camera. Watch how the smoke creeps closer to the laser and overexposes the camera. It will of course do the usual tricks that you see a burning laser do - like lighting matches... and popping balloons. With a little focus it will even light metal in the form of steel wool. Too close... out of focus... there you go!

I have been collecting radioactive items and minerals for almost two years now so it is time to share it with you and all the other collectors on Youtube. A good source of other radioactivity videos is Bionerd23's channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/bionerd23 Best radium based collection I have seen on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/ALARAiswise#p/a/u/1/bcbSGoQ7Hg0 Captions to help you understand my danish accent :o) : OK - after that disclaimer let's take a look at my radioactive collection as of July 2011. It contains small samples with relative low activities but I still take precautions with these because of the radioactivity. Mishandling these can be dangerous and even lethal in long terms. Let us start with the thorium-based part of my collection. This includes thoriated welding electrodes and gas mantles, euxenite, polycrase, thorite in different sizes, aeschynite and iron rich thorogummite. Here I use my Gamma Scout to measure the activity of the thorogummite. I have set the alarm quite high at 50 microsieverts/hou so the Gamma Scout will start to tick over this level. This time it peaked at 89 microsieverts/hour. My normal background level is .12 microsieverts/hour so this piece of thorogummite measures 744 times normal background level - not bad. Next I'll show you my special thorite sample which is cut like a gem stone. If the grim reaper ever were to wear jewelry this would be it. Dark and deadly - but quite beautiful actually. The camera doesn't do it justice. The seller did point out that this is not suitable as jewelry. He wasn't kidding... Next up is the radium based part of my collection. These are radium painted watch hands. I hate them. They caused so many deaths amongst the women that painted them, they emit a lot of radon and even a tiny speck of paint that falls off these loose spare hands is highly active. Much safer are the sealed vacuum tubes used in radars during World War II. I have a single Westinghouse 1B45 and two Western Electrics 1B22. It is the 1b22 tubes you see in the video. As you can see one of the boxes is still sealed. It has remained unopened since June 1945 - that's over 66 years. Moving on to the americium based sources. I have a total of 9 americiumoxide discs in various stages of the extraction process from smoke detectors. Three with an amount of 37 kBq and 6 with 33 kBq. When I turn on the ticker in the Gamma Scout it starts screaming from all the alpha-particles hitting it... and then it passes out. Too much for it to handle. Luckily with only the alarm turned on it manages to get a proper reading. The radiation is almost entirely alpha-particles which can't even penetrate the outer layer of dead cells in your skin so it is relatively safe radiation. Last but not least: my colorful uranium based collection. What you see is uranium glass, phurcalite with zippeite, betafite, uraninite, torbernite, samarskite, boltwoodite, autunite, samarskite with ytterbium, uraninite with gummite and more torbernite. I also have some of the famous uranium glazed pottery. This is not the Fiesta Ware brand. It is marked GMBC and the other ones in my collection are from Vernon Kilns. They are actually orange in real life but my camera picks them up as red - sigh. Here is a ½ gram sample of the infamous depleted uranium. It emits almost only alpha-particles which are stopped by the glass so I'm not picking up that much activity from it. I am not taking it out of the ampule though since it's also toxic. Sorry for the bad lighting but it peaks at 2.0something microsieverts/hour.

Many people have wondered how a 6" neo-magnet is shipped. In this video I show you how. This is not an unpacking video since I unpacked the magnet a long time ago but I have kept most of the original packaging as an easy way of storing the magnet relatively safe. Captions in case you don't understand my english with a danish accent: Hello. Since I published the video with my monster 6" neodymium magnet a lot of people have been interested in how this magnet was delivered without sticking to everything. Since I kept the original packaging as a storage for the magnet I can now show you how. The magnet comes in a surprisingly small box but there is a little trick involved as you will soon see. The box had 4 plastic strips around it as seen on the marks where I point. Under an initial layer of styrofoam the little trick is revealed. The box has a thin sheet of iron in the top and bottom to shield - or rather redirect - the magnetic field from the magnet. The sheet is pulled strongly towards the magnet so I have to be careful not to get cut. Now I place the sheet far away from the magnet to avoid it flying against the magnet and through me with its sharp edges. The next layers are made of pieces of plywood which can't be compressed like the styrofoam. After digging through more layers of styrofoam and plywood we find the magnet wrapped in plastic and paper. When delivered it came in vacuum packed plastic and paper wrapping like shown here with a much smaller magnet. It takes a little persuasion to get the magnet out since it is attracted to the sheet of iron in the bottom af the box. But there you have it: over 6½ kg of raw magnetic force. So.. is it really shielded? No. Only enough for the postman to get it out of the van but still have some 'What-da-f**k'-experiences. Yeah... he hates me...

I just had to make a new video to welcome all my new subscribers. I experienced a sudden boost in subscribers when one of my magnet videos somehow got featured on College Humor's website under the headline: "The only thing stronger than the magnet is his commitment to uncool things". 2010 have been a great year on Youtube for me. A lot of new subscribers and friends which I want to thank with this video. I also put some previews of what I expect to make videos of once in the future. Hopefully most of them in 2011 but who knows. I'm just a hobby amateur spending my short spare time on making these videos. I love to film and edit videos but often my job requires a lot of my time. But hey - without the job I couldn't earn money to the gadgets featured in the videos and the equipment to make the videos. So I hope you understand why it sometimes takes half a year between my uploads. Thanks for subscribing! The more subscribers I get the more I feel engaged to make new videos.

This video is part of a little series of videos I'm making on handling neodymium magnets safely. In this video I will show you how to determine the poles on disc, cube and sphere magnets. Knowing your magnets polarity is very useful for safely combining large magnets as shown in one of my other videos in this series. Music is by Kevin MacLeod (from his website incompetech.com) and Nick van Man (from his website music4yourvids.co.uk) used under Creative Commons license. Tracks used: 0:00 - 0:06 'Supernatural' by Kevin MacLeod ISRC: USUAN1100397 0:06 - 5:40 'Watching the sun go down' by Rick Van Man Here are the captions in case you don't understand my Danish accent: - Hi. In an earlier video I showed the advantages of knowing the polarities of your magnets. In this video I'm gonna show you how to determine the polarities of your magnets. Where is the north pole? - The professional way is to buy a dedicated pole detector. With just a click on a button it will tell you whether it's a north pole or a south pole you are pointing towards. - This is my favorite method. Use an old-school compass. - Let's start with a disc magnet as these are the easiest to determine. The poles are on the large flat surfaces. I let the magnet stand on its side so the poles are pointing towards the compass. Now I spin the magnet until the south part of the compass needle - which is actually a small magnet in itself - points towards the disc magnet. - With magnets opposite polarities attracts so now I know the north pole of my disc magnet is pointing towards the compass. I mark the north pole of the magnet with an N. And double check just for good measure. If I spin the magnet with no poles pointing towards the compass the needle doesn't move. This is valuable information for our next challenge: The cube magnet. - On a cube magnet you can't tell by the naked eye on which two surfaces the poles are. So you just have to put it randomly down. In this case I was a little unlucky and put the magnet down with its sides pointing towards the compass. Because the compass needle is not spinning along with the magnet. Therefore the poles of the magnet must be on the top and bottom surfaces and I have to tilt the magnet 90 degrees. Now the poles are pointing towards the compass and I do exactly the same as with the disc magnet. - With south pointing towards the magnet I have found the north pole of my magnet. Right here. I mark the north pole of the magnet with an N. - And now for the real challenge: The sphere magnet. Where are the poles on this one? - With a magnet that can roll in all directions it is very hard to get a steady and exact reading. The solution is to put the magnet on what I call a security board. This is just a thin wooden plate with a metal plate glued to the backside. On this board the magnet will always align with one pole pointing directly into the board and the other pole pointing directly upwards. - By now you should have figured out how to find the north pole. - The final method I am going to show you is to use the magnet as a compass in itself. In this case I'm going to use two small magnets from a play set. By hanging them on a long tension-free line the magnets will act as a compass and align with the Earth's magnetic field. I cannot force them to point in another direction. Eventually they will stop pointing in the same direction everytime. Make sure there is not metal close by - just like when you use a compass. - Here I point towards the geographic north. By definition the north pole of a magnet is the pole pointing towards the geographic north so northpole on a magnet is short for northpointing pole. That means I can mark the pole pointing towards north as the north pole. - Another version of this method is to float the magnet on some styrofoam in the middle of a waterbath. It takes a little more preparation but has much faster response time as shown. - Once you have determined the polarities of one magnet you can use it to determine it on all other magnets. The south pole of the marked magnet will stick to the north pole of your unmarked magnet.

Can you see the beam from the Dealextreme 200 mW red laser? A lot of people have asked me this and in this video I'll try to show you the answer. It highly depends on the conditions. It's never as bright as even a low power (20-30 mW) green laser but this is because of the human eye. Our eyes are not very sensitive to red light compared to green light so if you are looking for maximum beam visibility in clear air you should always go for a green laser. Hope this video clarifies even though it's hard to show you how it looks in real life. In real life it looks way better with its intense red color. And yes, I misspelled the website in the end. A lot of people have asked me: Can you see the beam from the 200 mW red laser from Dealextreme? The answer is: Well... sort of... It depends on the circumstances. Let me clarify. On their website they claim it to be visible in daylight. But it isn't. Just watch my first video. You can't see the beam in daylight. So what about in less powerful artificial light? Well... No... Not really. Okay. What about without light? Yes, you can see it but it's faint. Now let's try it with smoke in the air. Just a little puff from a very cheap smoke machine. I think the pictures spoke for themselves. There even was a reflection in the cabinet doors. Now I'll just leave you with a bonus clip. See ya later

Can you combine two large neodymium magnets without killing the magnets and yourself? For safe and compact storage you might want to combine magnets despite the dangers. In this video I show you how without ruining your magnets or your health! I have decided to make a little series of videos about safe handling of neodymium magnet. There aren't many videos on Youtube on this subject. I'm not an expert on this subject but I do have practical experience and have learned a lesson or two the hard way. In this video I put together two magnets with a spacer inbetween. I have a lot of magnets. Storing them individually with a safe distance would take a lot of space and make my home a ticking bomb of magnets ready to fly together. Combining them with a spacer makes a safe and space-saving storage. Watch my video 'Spacer or no spacer' for more details about the advantages of a spacer: https://youtu.be/9Q8qqUsNf-U Link to my video where I separate them again: https://youtu.be/ybY_wdQ5MSc How to determine polarities on the magnets: https://youtu.be/5I8gMmYLs30 This video also forced my into trying something new in my videos: voiceover. Since my danish accent may be hard to understand (and I had a cold while recording the voice-over) I have put English and Danish subtitles in the video. Just press CC under the video.

This video featured my largest neodymium magnet back in 2010 which also happens to be one of the largest in the world today. I hadn't seen neodymium magnets larger than 6 inches for sale (I had heard about some that were 8 inches in one dimension). Now, www.magnetportal.de has a D200 mm x H50 mm for sale. Check my video unboxing it here: https://youtu.be/yM4Xe2c0B8M Music credit: Royalty-free music from RickVanMan: http://Music4YourVids.co.uk Tracks used: Lonely Piano1 Film - Atmosphere FAQ: A lot of people ask what the magnet costs. The normal price for this magnet used to be €349 which was around $470 (February 2011) but neodymium has exploded in price since: [Update August 2011: The price is now 799€. I guess neodymium is getting very expensive very fast!] [Update January 2013: It's getting cheaper again: € 599 or $ 785] [Update March 2013: It's getting cheaper still: € 530 or $ 700] Another commonly asked question is: How do they ship this magnet? I show you this in another of my videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zO9nWgI_LY The text on the magnet is german: 'Die stärksten magnete der Welt' which translates to 'The strongest magnets in the world'. This was my first HD-video on Youtube. It was shot with a Canon HF10 in 1920x1080i AVCHD and edited on a Dell Studio XPS with Pinnacle Studio HD Ultimate Collection (version 14). The recorded sound is not so good in this video because of a lot of background noise. This is not the video camera's fault. I had to shoot this video with the camera far away from the magnet and then zoom in. This is to avoid any damage to the camera from the strong magnetic field, flying shrapnel etc. In more recent HD-videos I have recorded in 1080p, since Youtubes compressor hates interlaced formats and adds the digital artifacts you see in this video.

This is a video with my big neodymium magnet (which is no longer my biggest, watch another of my videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVv8qWZ8xzw). A powerful, yet dangerous magnet that can do amazing tricks. I've tried to make some original tricks in this video instead of just showing how much this magnet can lift (which is around 200 kg under optimal conditions). This video is really old so I had to change the audio at some point when the copyright claims started rolling all over YouTube.
