Check out https://drinklmnt.com/Brent for a FREE 8-count sample pack of their electrolyte mix with any drink mix purchase. Check out their new carbonated cans. They're awesome! In this video, I take a beautiful trek to a mine that once produced a mineral that they called "more rare than gold!" It was a mineral that was only commercially mined in this location in the entire world, yet it was responsible for somethign that is part of our everyday lives. I love going on hikes like this and hope you enjoy this trek! Here is a link to win the handmade coin from this video. It's FREE to enter: https://kingsumo.com/g/1ggqrj1/win-a-handmade-cerro-gordo-coin In this video, we dive deep into the Zinc Era of Cerro Gordo. A period of time that doesn't get near the attention as the silver era, but was longer, and in many ways more productive. I head down to the 700 level of the Union Mine to retrieve some smithsonite, refine the smithsonite all the way down to zinc, and use the zinc for it's most common uses. Along the way, we learn a lot more about the history of this famous mining town. Join me as I spend 12 hours mining inside Cerro Gordo's Union Mine! The miners back in the day would get paid $3/day for an above ground shift and $4 a day for an underground shift. A day would be a 12 hour shift. So in this video, I'm going to do the same amount of time down in the mine, and see how I do! You can see all the listings for the minerals here: https://www.ebay.com/usr/cerrogordo1865 The current total for the 12 hours = $170. Thank you all so much for your support and subscribing! Check out my book 'Ghost Town Living.' The best stories, untold history, meditations on life at Cerro Gordo. Check out https://drinklmnt.com/Brent for a FREE 8-count sample pack of their electrolyte mix with any purchase. LMNT definitely kept all the runners going on this brutal run! We are back! For the 2nd annual Cerro Gordo Silver Run. This year was bigger than ever with 230 runners trudging up our 8 mile dirt road to the abandoned mining town of Cerro Gordo. Along the way, they gained almost 5,000 feet in elevation. A big thanks to our other sponsors HOKA, Pit Viper, La Columbe, and more. Check out https://drinklmnt.com/Brent for a FREE 8-count sample pack of their electrolyte mix with any purchase. LMNT definitely kept me going on this hike, check it out! This week I set off on a 50 mile hike to 4 different mining camps, lost to time. The hike was brutal with over 25,000 feet of elevation gain and 25,000 feet of elevation loss. The reward was a look into history that few have had since the towns shut down. Each place tells a story that is related to Cerro Gordo, and that greater understanding makes my world that much better. Hello there! This is a video I dreamed of for a very long time. The American Hotel has risen from the ashes and is now framed in. Losing the original hotel was one of the most devastating days of my life and made me question the entire project, my life's path, and more. But thanks in big part to the support of this channel, we are seeing the American Hotel stand once again. Thank you all so, so, much for all the support over the years. 2024 is going to be the best year yet at Cerro Gordo, and I can't wait to share it with you all! Special thanks to each and every volunteer who came up here over the past few years and put work into this place. This wouldn't have happened without you. Another special THANK YOU to Kyle and Andrew at Southern Sierra Framing. They did amazing wood work raising this thing. My time up here has taught me so much and I have another very exciting announcement to make - I wrote a book! I have been working on this for almost two years now and I am SO excited to finally announce it. I put my put my heart and soul into this thing and really dug deep on making sense of these past 3+ years living up here. The book has all sorts of new stories, insights, and history of the town. I think it’s the best content I’ve ever made. If you've ever got anything out of this channel, I hope you'll consider pre-ordering the book. We have been getting some winter weather up here at Cerro Gordo and I wanted to show a bit of what it is like living up here during the winter. It's a challenge, but also the most beautiful the town ever is. I'm hoping to add more winter activities as the winter continues. What should I add next? Maybe a rope lift to do some skiing? Let me know in the comments. I'm trying to get better at snowboarding through all this as well. Thank you all so much for the support through the years! Hey guys! I cannot believe it has been another year up here. What a wild ride this journey continues to be. This past year has seen a lot get done, along with the hiccups that come with any big project like this. Thist past MONTH has seen some fun new updates - my best bottle find yet, a new cabin project, new history I've never know before, and even a mine mapping project that I'm very excited for in 2023. Thank you all so so much for all the support over the year(s)(!)! It truly means the world to me. If you aren't already, I hope you subscribe as I'm sure 2023 will be another wild ride! This week, I headed to check out an abandoned CASTLE in Texas. A castle that a couple just invested their life savings into! When I heard of this, I had to take a trip down. So in this video, I packed up my stuff from Cerro Gordo and headed to see what this castle was all about! This was a HUGE few weeks at Cerro Gordo. Finally. Finally, after nearly 2 years of battling concrete, the hotel for the American Hotel is DONE. Once again, we found ourselves in a place where no concrete companies would bring their trucks to our town. It was too dangerous, and there were easier jobs elsewhere. So instead of sitting back and letting someone else dictate whether a dream happened or not, we got to WORK. In the end, we broke open and mixed 1,500 ninety pound bags of concrete and got the job done. It was one of the craziest few days up here at Cerro Gordo. I have to give a HUGE shoutout to everyone who has helped out these past few weekends to make this possible - Aaron C, Scotty, Trevor, Phil, Pat, Craig, Dave, Jim, Marty, Aaron S, Hans, Christy, Paul, Daniel, Sabin, Elias, Damien, Richard, Andrew, Victoria, Chris K, Richie, Juan, Freddy, Elliot, Corbin, Jeff, Connor, James, Travis, Jake, Olmo, Brian, and many more!! https://betterhelp.com/ghosttownliving check out today's sponsor BetterHelp to get 10% off your first month of therapy. Well...it happened, again. Twice in a month our road has been completely washed out. This has halted progress on the American Hotel and everything else. It's been a very trying time, but if I've learned anything in the past 2 years or so, it's that the only way forward is through. So we got back after it and went about fixing the road, once again. Along the way, I took two side trips that really inspired me and helped keep everything in perspective. I visited the graves of the 1872 Earthquake victims as well as the Burro Schmidt Tunnel. Both really helped me this week as all this was happening. The stories for both are really interesting and I hope you took as much away from them as I did. Check out https://drinklmnt.com/Brent for a FREE sample pack with any purchase. LMNT has been a huge supporter of the town, I use it every single day, so I hope you'll check it out! Hey guys, this week was a hard one up here at Cerro Gordo. A "1,000 year flood" hit Death Valley right by us and completely washed out our road. Short term, it made it impossible to get up or down the road. Long term, this will mean we cannot get the trucks up the road needed to continue progress on the American Hotel and many other projects. This is an absolutely devastating blow in the series of devastating blows that seems to come with living up here. The future of many projects is completely up in the air right now and may push the timeline into the winter, which would mean at least 6-8 months of no progress. BUT we're doing everything we can to push through. More photos: https://www.instagram.com/brentwunderwood/ To support the town! We have Cerro Gordo T-Shirts and more. Hey guys! This week was INSANE up here at Cerro Gordo. We brought the largest water tank to ever be up here to town thanks to the help of Heavy D Sparks and Diesel Dave and crew! 40,000 gallon tank measuring over 47 ft long and 13 ft around. This will provide the water for the American Hotel sprinkler system. A HUGE day in Cerro Gordo's history...but it's not done yet. Hey guys! In this video we sampled ore from all over Cerro Gordo. It will take trips 500 ft down a mineshaft, down treacherous hills, and much more! This week I take the long trek into an abandoned Death Valley mining town that was discovered by bandits hiding out - Panamint City. It would grow to become known as 'the next Cerro Gordo' as it became a boomtown. Some of the same characters that helped build Cerro Gordo made their way over to Panamint City. Hello everyone! This month marks TWO YEARS that I've been living in the abandoned mining town of Cerro Gordo. It's truly hard for me to believe that. I came up here in March of 2020 to escape the pandemic and spend time in this town I love. That has led me on the journey of a lifetime. Since then I've explored abandoned mines, hiked in beautiful settings, rode my dirtbike all over the place, rebuild cabins, and fully fallen in love with this town. I want to thank all of you so much for the support and following along over these past two years. This has been a journey with a lot of ups and downs and I think going into Year 3, this town, and myself, are prepared for the long journey ahead. Hey everyone! This week I am back after my longest break yet with some happenings from around town. As always, I was in the mines, exploring on my dirtbike, and even had a visit from someone very important to Cerro Gordo's past and future! Thank you all so much for the support as I try to find a better balance of release schedule. Hey guys!! This week I hiked into the abandoned gold mining town of Beveridge. Beveridge was established in the late 1800s, and is tucked far away from anything in a canyon. I had heard rumors of the town since I moved to Cerro Gordo, and finally got the nerve to attempt it myself. Because of the extremely remote nature of the town, I was told that it was very well preserved. The hike was said to be a very difficult one, which definitely proved to be true! Hey guys! Metal detecting is something I've always wanted to do at Cerro Gordo. I've tried many times during my stay here, but never fully got the hang of it. But given that Cerro Gordo had so many people living here over so long, there has to be things in the ground!! So to try to unearth any of those artifacts a bit quicker than I could on my own, I invited out 50 viewers of the channel! It was an absolutely amazing weekend and one that I'll remember for a very long time to come. I hope to have many more group events in the coming years! Cerro Gordo was once the biggest producer of silver in the state of California. When it was at its peak, the town had almost 5,000 residents, all centered around the mining activity there. I have been living in this ghost town for almost 2 years now, and have been increasingly curious about what life was like back in Cerro Gordo's heyday. In this video, I explore the mines and the town to try to give a clearer picture of what the life of an 1800s silver miner was like. == You can follow my journey on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brentwunderwood/ Cerro Gordo T-Shirts and more: https://store.cerrogordomines.com/ You can send me mail at: PO Box 490, Lone Pine, CA 93545

This was my 20th month living in the abandoned mining town of Cerro Gordo! Almost two years! This week I visited the abandoned mining town of Bodie, CA. Bodie was a gold mining boom town in the 1800s that shared some similar characters to Cerro Gordo. Bodie was taken over the the State of California in 1962 and has since remained in a state of 'arrested decay.' I went there this week to learn a bit more about the town, it's caretakers, and the efforts they go to in order to preserve Bodie. There is a lot to learn from the experience at Bodie that I can translate back at Cerro Gordo! If you aren't already, I hope you'll considering subscribing to this channel. I've wanted to make pure silver as long as I've owned an abandoned silver mine. This past week, I found a book published in 1886 that walked through all the different steps. It was raining, so what better thing to do than read up and try to make the first batch of Cerro Gordo silver in a VERY long time. I went back in the mines, collected galena, and set off to take it all the way down to silver, the way they did it back in the 1800s. Turns out, making silver isn't the easiest thing, but it did bring me a LOT of appreciation for all the miners, smelters, and assayers who called this town home back in the 1800s. Special thanks to Matt P, a volunteer who read this book too and helped make this happen! The base bullion bar is given away, but enter to win a Cerro Gordo ring! Made of pure Cerro Gordo silver! When it was completed in 1913 it was the steepest tramway in the country brining salt from Saline Valley, up and over the Inyo Mountains, and down into Owen's Valley. The tramway started at 1,100 ft in elevation, rose to 8,700 ft in elevation, and dropped back down to 3,000 ft in elevation. The hike from the summit station down into Saline Valley is a brutal hike that goes over shale, sidehills, dry waterfalls, and a lot more. For me, it was one of the most difficult hiking days I've ever had and one that didn't quite go according to plan... Thank you all so much for the support! This week I went to the very bottom of Cerro Gordo's Union Mine - the 900 level! This is a level I've been wanting to explore since I first purchased Cerro Gordo but was just looking for the right moment. What better time than reaching 1,000,000 subscribers? Getting down there is easier said than done and was full of all sorts of surprises, hiccups, and tense moments. This was the busiest month yet! at Cerro Gordo! Tons of progress around the town this month. I officially broke ground on the American Hotel thanks to a lot of support, salvaged a ton of wood from a neighboring ghost town, took the scariest trip down the Union Mine yet, and a lot more! The day is finally here! Almost on year to the date after losing the American Hotel, construction has begun again. This was my most exciting days at Cerro Gordo yet. After months of trying to figure out how to get concrete here, Heavy D Sparks came through with his crew and made it happen! We had a great week getting the site ready, sneaking in some mine explorations, and a lot more! Show Dave's channel love here: https://www.youtube.com/c/HeavyDSparks/ Thank you so much to all the volunteers who came out to help Cerro Gordo and make this happen. It's amazing to think this channel is helping rebuild this town. I truly appreciate every person who has come out, watched a video, and in all ways supported this town. This week, I take on a mine exploration I've been planning for nearly a year - the Newtown Mine. This part of the mine is only accessible by a 300 ft vertical shaft and hasn't been explored in a century. I've never been one for heights so the thought of lowering myself down a rope 300 ft prevented me from exploring this sooner. I finally decided to face my fears and headed down this week! It was the scariest exploration I've done to date, but did leave me much more comfortable for future adventures. There are TONS of great videos coming up. A lot has been happening around Cerro Gordo recently, so if you aren't already, I hope you'll subscribe to the channel! It's free and that way you can see all the progress going on up here. This week I head back to a mine I first stumbled upon 6 months ago. At the time, I was busy getting somewhere else, but since then I've read up on the mine and couldn't get it's beautiful views out of me head. So this week, I headed back to explore the mine, build a structure to stay in overnight, and enjoy the views of Death Valley National Park. This mine was full of the most beautiful crystals I've ever seen! This week I'm headed back down the Union Mine here at Cerro Gordo to the 700 ft level. That is where the only water source for the whole town is. The pump stopped working again about 6 months ago and I had to wait out the cold weather to go back down. But now, I need water for more than just cleaning up. I need it to make the concrete for the American Hotel. So this week, I headed back down to fix the pump...and do a few hours of exploring. This might be my favorite level of the Union Mine and I was surprised how much there was to explore. Thanks so much for following along and subscribing! It means a lot to me! It's been 13 months up here at Cerro Gordo now! It's almost impossible for me to believe. I remember the craziest idea ever would be one year alone up here. Now, I'm a month past that and it's made me think more about my future up here and the projects I want to focus on. This month I completed a few building renovation projects I've been wanting to clear up, took some epic explorations, and continued some ongoing projects. I really, really appreciate everyone who has taken the time to check out this channel. It's made these past 13 months the best 13 months of my life. THANK YOU! This week, I head over to Nevada to explore the Bonanza King Mine! Currently on the market for $40,000,000! This gold mine was first worked in 1868 with the open cut mine that is still visible today. Eventually a shaft was put in down to the 300 level. Over the years a variety of crews worked the claim until operations were shut down in 1910. Since there, there have been a few studies done on this mine. The most recent exploration told to me was in 1993. The explorer that day studied 3 levels of the mine, the 50 level, 75 level, and 100 level. Upon returning, he called the owner, sat down to write up a full report, and died at his typewriter. Nobody has been into the mine since. This week, I packed my bags to go explore this abandoned mine. - Follow along on Instagram for more photos! https://www.instagram.com/brentwunderwood/ Mailing Address: PO Box 490, Lone Pine, CA 93545 Thank you all so much for your support and for subscribing!!

Thank you all for one of the best years of my life! One year in an abandoned mining town. I could have never imagined 12 months ago what the town had in store. Now I sit here a year later and am filled with gratitude. This year has taught me a lot and brought all sorts of amazing people into my life, because of this channel. So thank you! For more photos around the town, check out my Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brentwunderwood/ Once upon a time, Cerro Gordo was the largest producer of silver for the state of California. Miners pulled over $500 million worth of minerals out of this mountain. Close to 4,000 people called it home in the late 1800s. By the 1940s the town was out of minerals, out of water, and mostly abandoned. I moved up here March 2020 to try to bring life back to this forgotten town. It's been a year of ups and downs. A year of learning self-reliance, new skills, and much more. Thank you all for following along and make sure to SUBSCRIBE because I'm headed into Year 2 up here! A lot more adventures in store! Hey guys! This week I took a quick adventure to Nevada to check in on two mining towns I've wanted to go to for a while. Gold Point, Nevada and Goldfield, Nevada. Both were important mining towns back in the day. Both provide inspiration and ideas on my efforts at Cerro Gordo. On the way back, I stopped by the Bristlecone Pine Forest, home to the oldest trees in the world! It was a nice day off the mountain that gave me all sorts of new ideas. I'm rapidly coming up on my 1-year anniversary of being at Cerro Gordo full-time! I'm putting a lot of work into a recap video and can't wait to share that with you in a few weeks. This week I'm searching for a mine - the Silver Spear Mine. This was at one point the main mining operation at Cerro Gordo...and I knew nothing about it until Christmas this year. That's when a family sent me their grandmother's journal. She was the caretaker at Cerro Gordo from 1939-1942. These are years that aren't covered in the history books up here. Inside the journal, she often referred to the "Silver Spear" mine. So this week, I decided to try to find and explore that mine... It took me 12 hours to walk all of Cerro Gordo's former tramway, but I'm glad I did! This aerial tramway was how ore was moved from Cerro Gordo to Keeler below. It stretched about 8 miles up and over peaks and valleys. Miners used to ride the tram back up the mountain from Keeler after a day at the bar. A lot of the tramway was far away from any road, leaving it relatively unexplored. My hope was to find artifacts to return to Cerro Gordo's museum. These days, mining tramways are a thing of the past. As mining changed to open pit mining and large trucks and more efficient road building became available, they became obsolete remnants of the past. The timbers will eventually decay away and the wire rope will rust into dust. And all the history and innovation that went into these beautiful structures will be lost on future generations. So hopefully this video will give you an idea of the magnitude of these systems, without you having to make the 12 hour hike yourself! Thank you all for the support for the channel and town so far! Water! That's been the missing puzzle piece at Cerro Gordo since the town was established in 1865. There have been many attempts at securing running water here, but none have worked in the long run...yet. This week I dive into the past, present, and future of the water problem here at Cerro Gordo. Cerro Gordo was once California's largest producer of silver. The town produced nearly $500 million of minerals during it's heyday. It was also a lawless town. During it's peak, the town averaged a murder per week and a local judge described the population as "lawless ruffians who with murder in their hearts and the implements of death strapped upon their persons, congregate in public places, ever ready to discharge their death-dealing weapons upon the unoffending and unarmed citizens." Even so, Cerro Gordo was an important town in the American West. The prosperity of the town contributed to Los Angeles's early development. This video is a brief overview of the town's past, present, and future. If you're looking for more photos from around town, follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brentwunderwood/ If you haven't already, please, PLEASE subscribe to the channel. It would mean a lot to me. Mailing address: PO Box 490, Lone Pine, CA 93545 THANK YOU!! == Brief History: Cerro Gordo was first established as a mining town in 1865 by Pablo Flores and several companions. The first large-scale mining operation was set up in 1866 by Jose Ochoa, who was extracting about 1.5 tons of ore every 12 hours. At the time, silver ore sold for about $300 a ton. The quality and quantity of ore that Cerro Gordo produced attracted a lot of interest statewide including merchant Victor Beaudry, who thought Cerro Gordo has the potential to be far more than a typical mining town. Beaudry opened the first general store in Cerro Gordo in 1866. In 1868, Beaudry teamed up with Mortimer Belshaw to expand the mining operations in Cerro Gordo. The same year Belshaw brought the first load of Cerro Gordo silver to Los Angeles. There he pitched Egbert Judson, president of the California Paper Company on the potential of Cerro Gordo. Judson was impressed by the pitch and the ore that Belshaw brought to LA and agreed to finance the Cerro Gordo operations. The trio formed the Union Mining Company. Armed with the finances, Cerro Gordo started an era of unequalled prosperity in 1868. The mine started regularly sending silver bullion to Los Angeles in December of that year. Each ingot was 18 inches long, weighed approximately 85 pounds, and depending on the silver content worth $20-$25. By the end of 1869, more than 340 tons of bullion has been pulled from Cerro Gordo and transported to Los Angeles. Cerro Gordo silver became the most common silver in Los Angeles, proudly displayed at the best hotels and banks, as well as many of the businesses along Main and Spring Streets. In 1869, The Los Angeles Times praised Cerro Gordo for helping expand Los Angeles and outlined the city’s dependence on the mine, “What Los Angeles is, is mainly due to it. It is the silver cord that binds our present existence. Should it be uncomfortably severed, we would inevitably collapse.” The rapid expansion of Cerro Gordo’s mining operation meant the rapid expansion of the town. By 1869, just three years year after operations began, the town’s population had increased to 1,500. In 1871 the two-story American Hotel was completed (which still stands today), as well as other permanent structures. The silver output had expanded to five tons per day by 1871. In 1874 Cerro Gordo delivered more than $2,000,000 worth of bullion to Los Angeles. By 1874, 3,400 tons of supplies were shipped into Cerro Gordo annually to support the town’s population eventually grew to more than 4,500. In the coming years, the price of silver plummeted and a lot of the mining operations were shut down or moved to different towns. By 1888, the town was all but abandoned, with only 30-40 people still living there. In 1905, the property was purchased by the Great Western Ore company. The company had created a new smelting device designed to extract zinc and silver at a cheaper price. The success of the company brought a new wave of activity and prosperity to Cerro Gordo. The town again grew to a few hundred residents as they mined silver, zinc, and limestone.

The town was originally established in 1865 and by 1869 they were pulling 340 tons of ore out of the mountain for Los Angeles. The silver from Cerro Gordo was responsible for building Los Angeles. The prosperity of Cerro Gordo demanded a larger port city and pushed LA to develop quickly. The Los Angeles News once wrote: “What Los Angeles is, is mainly due to it. It is the silver cord that binds our present existence. Should it be uncomfortably severed, we would inevitably collapse.” In total, there has been over $17,000,000 of minerals pulled from Cerro Gordo. Adjusted for inflation, that number is close to $500,000,000. It’s been a wild ride so far owning a ‘ghost town’ and we’re having a lot of fun figuring out what to do with it. The type of things that might lead you here are interests in ghost towns, abandoned mining towns, abandoned cities, California history, the zombie apocalypse, ghost stories, scary stories, nature, death valley, lone pine CA, mines, exploring, overnight challenges, exploration, urban exploration and yes theory. #CerroGordo #GhostTownLiving #Abandoned #Offthegrid

The mine system at Cerro Gordo is sprawling and complicated. The Union Mine Shaft is the main artery to accessing many of the mines, but the problem is that it's an elevator that requires a team to operate it, so I'm always on the hunt for other ways to get into the Union Mine system. I recently purchased a book that lays out all the geological information of the mine system at Cerro Gordo and I found a few possible access points to get into the main mine. Two of those were through the Bullion Tunnel, so I got Johnny to come mount up and get ready to explore with me on what he called "our dumbest" mission yet. == You can follow my journey on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brentwunderwood/ You can send me mail at: PO Box 490, Lone Pine, CA 93545 THANK YOU!!

Halloween Special! I hope you enjoy this dive into the history of paranormal at Cerro Gordo! Cerro Gordo was one of the deadliest towns in the American West. At it's peak, the town had a reported murder per week. A local judge described the residents of the town as: "lawless ruffians who with murder in their hearts and the implements of death strapped upon their persons, congregate in public places, ever ready to discharge their death-dealing weapons upon the unoffending and unarmed citizens." Because of all the death, the town has a rich history in paranormal activity. In this video I tell the story of the famous 'ghosts' of Cerro Gordo, and try to find them. If you own a ghost town with reported paranormal activity, you have to go hunting for ghosts at least once. == Thank you for your support and for subscribing. I decided to push the limits a bit here and go down the main mine shaft at Cerro Gordo overnight. The way the mine works, I had to take the cage down and get picked up the next day, so there was no way out. If the idea itself wasn't crazy enough, I made it even harder on myself by forgetting key pieces of equipment above ground, which I only realized hours into my time down there. I heard voices throughout the night and kept seeing flashes of light. I don't draw that much continued attention to that side of it in the video, because I don't like overplaying 'haunted' or 'creepy' side of it. I think that can be overplayed easily and not what I want the channel to stand on. But hope you enjoy my experience down there! You can follow my journey on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brentwunderwood/ In this video, I go exploring the most dangerous mine I've been in, and probably the most dangerous mine at Cerro Gordo. This was not just an exploration, we were searching to see if the 200 level opened to the outside, because there were theories that cold air was coming into the main shaft and freezing the water pipes. The mine itself was completely boarded up, so Johnny and I had to dig in from above through tight squeezes to get into the 200 level of the Union Mine. This shaft was deemed too dangerous years after the deadliest mining disaster in Cerro Gordo's history took the lives of between 8 and 35 miners in the 1870s. “Cerro Gordo’s deadliest mine disaster struck in the early 1870s when a cave-in killed at least eight and as many as 35 Chinese miners. They were mining in limestone below the 200-foot level and failed to shore up the tunnel with timber, former Cerro Gordo mining foreman Fred Fisher told a Times reporter in 1950. Their bodies were never recovered.” - LA Times March 12, 1950 THANK YOU!! I moved to Cerro Gordo in March 2020 because of the pandemic and to relieve our longtime caretaker so he could be back home. If you'd like to see more behind the scenes photos, follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brentwunderwood/ I live in an abandoned mining town about 30 miles from the closest store. The final 7 miles to get here is up a steep dirt road where you go from 3,000 ft in elevation to 8,500 ft in elevation. The road is not plowed or maintained unless it gets extremely bad. People asked in the comments how I get my supplies living so far away from everything. Hopefully this gives a little insight into how I do that. I use a Polaris to get down/up the final 7 mile dirt road so I can go faster. Then I have a truck in Keeler which I transfer to. THANK YOU!!

For more photos of what I find in Cerro Gordo, check out my Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brentwunderwood/ This is the coolest thing I've found at Cerro Gordo. It was wrapped in a blanket in the general store, in a room nobody had been in decades. When I opened it I found the highs and lows of 3 different miner's lives. Love letters, divorce decrees, mining leases, bankruptcy lawsuits, and even one letter than contained a map hand drawn, leading to where the author believe a rich ore deposit to be. I'm going to track down where the map says to go and see if there is anything there. I'd also love to find some living family of some of these miners. Curious if they knew they were up at Cerro Gordo and their experiences here. Thanks as always for the support!

Around 2am June 15th, 2020 the American Hotel burned down at Cerro Gordo. The American Hotel was the crown jewel of Cerro Gordo. It was my favorite building. It was almost everyone’s favorite building. You couldn’t take a picture of Cerro Gordo without the American Hotel. It’s where we gathered, laughed, entertained, and basked in an iconic piece of American history. It was a place I couldn’t wait to show off visitors when they came. I even would sketch the front of the building when I wasn’t there, thinking of it. I’m beyond devastated and haven’t really slept since but did want to get an update out. The cause is believed to be faulty electric and/or rodents by an electrician we had out today. The buildings up here are extremely old and the wood very dry and fires have always been an issue. Here is GoFundMe in case you're interested in supporting: https://www.gofundme.com/f/cerro-gordo
