Slide-show Shuffle - Rollin' Rascal (Demo Version)

Tiny jam session volume 2 - Red Coin Challenge (Super Mario Sunshine)

Tiny jam session volume 2 - Red Coin Challenge (Super Mario Sunshine)

Here's a new tiny jam session, an extremely hectic one! It's the theme for timed Red Coin challenges in Super Mario Sunshine! Listening back to the original, I had never noticed that the tempo actually increases in the second half, before settling back down as it loops. That's what really kicked off making this arrangement, where you'll find the tempo changes pretty often! You can download the track on BandCamp: https://scruffymusic.bandcamp.com/track/tiny-jam-session-volume-2-red-coin-challenge-super-mario-sunshine If you enjoy my music and educational work, you can support my channel on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/scruffymusic Instruments used: • Steel Drum - Logic Sampler • Electric piano, fretless bass, & marimba - samples from Waffles's Instrument Hoard • Synth bass - Logic Alchemy • Bass clarinet - East West Hollywood Woodwinds • Drum kit - East West Stormdrum Multisamples • Latin percussion - Logic Sampler

Necessity is the mother of invention: I realized early that a baritone like me couldn't come near Ted Poley and Tony Harnell's original, effortlessly in B major. But if I transposed it down a couple half-steps and slowed it down a bit, I could just hit it at the top of my range. The tempo change got me thinking about the style, and I listened to some Beatles, Sam Cooke, Ricky Nelson, the Teenagers, the Tokens - somehow, oldies rock clicked for this arrangement! So I hope you enjoy it! *Instruments used:* • Live vocals • Live electric guitar • Live snapping and clapping • Bass - Logic Studio Bass (Upright) • Piano - Logic Studio Piano (Upright) • Drums - Logic Drumkit Designer

Tiny jam session volume 2 - Mario/Luigi/Yoshi Circuit (Double Dash!!)

Here's a new tiny jam session, and something about it really sounds tiny this time around! It's the Circuit theme from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, carrying the torch of where Tiny Jam Session began. It starts with Driftveil Village, a hypothetical historic version of the city, now that Pokémon's Legends games have set the precedent for exploring those. I based it a lot off the vibes of Jubilife Village in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, and it provides a nice contrast with the chic, jaunty modern-day version in the second half! I hope you enjoy it! We both started realizing its similarities to Salmon Run from the Splatoon series, so we started crafting a Splatoon/HELLDIVERS crossover: SHELLDIVERS! It was so fun to conceptualize that I arranged the HELLDIVERS 2 theme in a Splatoon-y style, and DPC drew the album artwork! Picture Inklings and Octolings in drop-pods launched from orbit, entering the fray to eliminate encroaching Salmonids from a host of planets colonized by Grizzco, which is now an interplanetary authoritarian megacorp that trumpets propaganda about defending liberty and democracy... although it's clear they're really after those golden salmon eggs. One such piece of propaganda is this crossover resident idol band, Democra-sea, depicted here in the album art! Grouper on the left plays horn, and Taimen on the right plays snare drum, and together they keep morale and obedience at an all-time high among squid kids. So I hope you enjoy this fun little arrangement! After all, it would be treason against Grizzco if you didn't! *Instruments used:* • Live electric guitar • Live five-string electric bass • Live vocals (through heavy filters) • Drums - East West StormDrum Multisamples • Synths - Logic Alchemy • Horns and trumpets - East West Hollywood Brass

Scruffy Plays Pikmin 4 - Episode 26 (Finale)

Pikmin 4 is here! And I'm recording my playthrough so I can chronicle my thoughts and reactions as they happen! This is it: the finale! I wrap up the enormous final expedition and the final area, and offer some retrospective thoughts on the completed game. There will still be supplemental episodes coming up where I narrate the troves of flavor text in this massive game, but otherwise, this is the last of our adventure through Pikmin 4! I'd like to thank all of you for supporting and enjoying this fun endeavor and this experiment with recording gameplay and commentary. Now I'll be back to work on what I do best, What I Love videos and music, and it'll probably be a good while before I try something like this again. But I really enjoyed putting this together for you, and it's become a dedicated journal of my thoughts on the game... so suffice it to say this likely won't be the last game I'll record! The music used at the dedication at the end is me performing a bit of "Namida Ga Afureta" by Strawberry Flower.

Scruffy Plays Pikmin 4 - Episode 14

Pikmin 4 is here! And I'm recording my playthrough so I can chronicle my thoughts and reactions as they happen! I can't shake my curiosity about the game's 4th area, and it turns out it also features its share of caves—difficult ones with fascinating new gameplay mechanics to add! Between that, a night mission, and a Dandori challenge, I'm constantly on my feet this episode. Music used at the dedication at the end is an excerpt from "Lament" composed by Malcolm Williamson, performed by the Northern Sinfonia.

It's time to try out some night expeditions, which, surprise surprise, turn out to be a fair shake more difficult than day expeditions! In between them is a more peaceful daytime exploration of the 2nd area. Content warning: Oatchi gets downed during a mission in this episode, around 53:15. Since this tune features samples of a big band, I had some fun and wrote a bit of a love letter to several big bands I've absorbed over the years, by taking tiny samples of them and collaging them into a part in this arrangement! We also may visit more Sonic-series mountains than just the Sweet variety with this melody... *Instruments used* • Small samples of various big band recordings, including (in the order they appear in the arrangement): - "Nutville" from "The Roar of '74" - Buddy Rich - "Watermelon Man" from "Act Your Age" - Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band - "Jump Up, Super Star!" from "Super Mario Odyssey" - The Super Mario Players - "Backwoods Sideman" from "The Roar of '74" - Buddy Rich - "Let's Play Live! This game is all about teaming up as companion pieces of paper, clipping each other into the right shapes for charming little quests across many levels. And the music is so much fun, this might be the most fun I've had arranging a piece of video game music so far. Even with its original charm and lovely melodic composition, I still found ways to have fun with the orchestration and style. I couldn't go this one alone, so I got my friend and brilliant guitarist Mattmatatt to seriously elevate what I had, many kudos to him! I'm really happy with the result, sometimes it leans toward Tigran Hamasyan, other times toward Queens of the Stone Age, but all orbiting around a battle with the notorious Furies! *Instruments used* • Live electric guitar by Mattmatatt! • Live electric five-string bass • Piano - Keyscape Yamaha C7 • Lutes - Logic Sampler and 8Dio Lute • Drums - Logic Drum Kit (Heavy) • Synth textures - Retro Synth, Sculpture, and Alchemy patches • Synth melody - Logic ES2 custom patch • Cajón - Logic Studio Percussion • Tambourines - East West Hollywood Percussion • Shaker and Riq - Logic default loops

It's certainly a complex theme: mainly in 13/8 time signature with an angular dialogue between piano and synthesizer, but not always! Not to mention, my own arrangement has some jazzy fun with it on top of that complexity. Major bonus points to anyone who happens to recognize the obscure musical reference starting at around 1:45 in this arrangement... my hint is that it has nothing to do with the Legend of Zelda! *Instruments used* • Live egg shaker • Live bongos • Piano - Keyscape LA Custom C7 • Synth melody and sound effects - Logic ES2/Sculpture custom patches • Bass sample synths - samples from Waffles' Pik Pack (Shakuhachi, Jaw Harp) • Bass guitar - Kontakt Factory Selection • Contrabass - East West Hollywood Strings • Low brass - East West Hollywood Brass • Bass trombone - Logic Studio Horns • Solo strings - Kontakt Factory Selection • Bagpipe - East West Ra • Cymbals, tubular bell - East West Hollywood Percussion • Daf - Logic Sampler (Indian & Middle Eastern Kit) • Drum set - Logic Drum Kit

My friend and fellow composer rud co-wrote this hourly theme with me, and he performs the accordion on it! After the stranger parts of the late night, it's time to settle back into the feeling of early morning approaching, with a more somber, hopeful, and altogether tired tune. Sometimes it's hard to get to sleep for the night. There are some Junctions that, while perhaps not active all day, are still open 24/7. And you might be able to find some friends there who can help the time go by without feeling too lonely, until you're all tired enough to call it a night. Harvey, for instance, can be found hanging out in one of the nature-themed Junctions at night, and he's always willing to share some sticks for roasting marshmallows. *Instruments used* • Accordion - live Weltmeister accordion, played by rud! • Keyboard - Keyscape Wurlitzer 200A • Tuned Gongs - East West Ra • Music Box - Keyscape Celeste, SonicCouture Music Box

Perhaps it's a good theme for figuring out what to do now that you've decided to stay up late. Some Junctions are open 24/7, such as the all-important post office! Pelly takes the day shift, and Phyllis takes the night shift, so any time of day you can stop by to mail letters, send packages, and even help with the delivery service! This is one of the "easiest" Junctions, since not only is it open at all hours, but it only takes one visit before you can start setting up mail services in your town. I totally came from the original Animal Crossing with these ideas, there are even a few direct homages to its 12 AM theme (such as that wind singer sample). Now that you've crossed the "have a good night" threshold and are planning to stay up, Animal Crossing can explore a bit more expressive or even weird vibes for the earliest part of the morning. You've technically made it through to a new day—congrats!—but it might not feel like it just yet. It's dark out, but if it's a clear night, why not pay Celeste a visit at her observatory Junction? She's got plenty to teach you about the night sky, constellations, the Moon, and other things you might observe in the night sky... if you find a shooting star, make sure to make a wish on it! Helping Celeste with her research enough will clue you in on when weather patterns, big meteor showers, or other celestial events. I'm currently out of town visiting friends for the majority of August, but that doesn't stop me from making music! For a lot of players, hours like 10 PM would be the last ones before they head off to bed. So, I like the idea that around this time, the music wishes you a good night, whether you're offline after this, or whether you're crossing the threshold into late night. You've done quite a bit today... at any time of day, you can get in a bed or a hammock or any comfy spot to lie down and rest. If the bed is in your own house, you can dream of other towns using Luna's dream services. Or, you could choose just to close your eyes and space out, and listen to your radio, record player, the night ambience.... But for those who aren't set on falling asleep yet, there's plenty more to do even well into the night in Animal Crossing: Taking Root... I'm currently out of town visiting friends for the majority of August, but that doesn't stop me from making music! Animal Crossing music is generally rather relaxed, but night time is when you really start to notice the contrast from more energetic daytime themes. There are a few hours that try to wish players a good night, just in case they pack it in early. While some Junctions close at night, others are open 24/7 and switch out hosts! For instance, Nat hosts a bug-collecting Junction with a lush little ranch to attract all manner of insect life. But Nat's only around during the daytime: at night, Flick takes over the Junction and rearranges the ranch to accommodate insects that are more active at night. The sort of activity on offer at a 24/7 Junction may change a bit throughout the day, so try mixing your schedule up every now and then! *Instruments used* • Keyboard - Keyscape Rhodes • Drums - Logic Drum Kit Designer • Marimba - Logic Sampler (Marimba) • Acoustic guitar - Ample Guitar M II Lite • Electric guitar - Logic Sampler (Sunburst Electric) • Bass - Logic Sampler (Muted Bass)

This one is an inversion of 8 AM: the clarinets still hold the melodic motif from 8 AM, but the contour of the melody is upside-down. The orchestration is also more laid-back, suggesting the evening has really arrived. At 8 PM, some shops in the downtown plaza Junction settle in for the night, such as the Able Sisters tailor. However, that doesn't mean friendly vendors like Mabel and Sable just disappear for the night! If you visit Junctions within a while after they've closed, you can visit the special characters there while they're off-duty. It doesn't yield anything for your town, but sometimes it's nice to have a conversation without a counter in between the two of you! And sometimes, perhaps you'll receive something sweet in the mail for being more than a customer. *Instruments used* • Live clarinet • Piano - Keyscape Yamaha C7 • Celesta - Keyscape Celesta • Drums - Logic Drum Kit Designer

Originally, this hour was going to be even more relaxed than 6 PM, but as I worked on it, the direction changed little by little. I eventually realized I wanted to swing back around from the more relaxed mood of the previous two hours, to make the bona fide evening a bit more lively before the town gets sleepy. The sun's nearly down, but that doesn't mean the day is over! There's plenty of fun to be had in the evening, from sports to bug hunting to smaller games, like board games! If you have any board games laid out or any sports arenas plotted, you can invite villagers or other players to join in! Villagers excel in different activities depending on what type of villager they are: for example, your friend Pashmina excels in games of strategy like checkers. But they can improve over time at any game if you keep inviting them. Some villagers might even have their own house rules, a spin on the game that they apply when you play with them in particular. Not to mention some board games or sports are playable at Junctions, so you can play with any villager who visits. The ultimate ice-breaker! *Instruments used* • Drums - Logic Drum Kit Designer • E. Piano - Keyscape Wurlitzer 200A • Violin pizzicato - East West Hollywood Solo Violin • Melody - Dexed Yamaha DX7 PIPES 3 patch • Saw bass - Logic ES2 • Sound effect - General MIDI percussion, from Waffles's Pik Pack

New Leaf has some of my favorite tracks when it comes to the "mid" evening, past 5 PM but not extremely late yet. So I've taken plenty of notes from there to create a track that winds things down, welcomes you home, and prepares you for a calm evening. The sun is really beginning to set now, and the best place to watch it kiss the horizon is the west shoreline. While you're there, might as well do a little fishing! Fishing works the same as always in Animal Crossing: Taking Root. But if you visit the pier Junction and talk with Chip or CJ, they can help you improve your fishing rod and tackle, identify and categorize fish, and schedule up fishing tourneys in your town. Those tourneys would still run until 6 PM, because there's no need to rush yourself at this beautiful time of day. *Instruments used* • Live electric guitar • Live ukulele • Acoustic guitar synth - Dexed Yamaha DX7 GUITAR 6 patch • Drums - Roland CR-78 • Bass - Logic Synth E-Bass (the G.O.A.T.)

My friend and fellow composer rud co-wrote this hourly theme with me, and he performs the accordion on it! It's a laid back bossa that aims to celebrate Animal Crossing as a whole. And with it, we're halfway through the compilation! Even with gardening, cooking, Junctions to visit... what would Animal Crossing be without its welcoming, wholesome sense of patience? There's no rush to do anything, all debts to Tom Nook have no deadlines, and even special single-day celebrations can be made up if you happen to miss them, just talk to Isabelle. In the meantime, there's always time to just find a cozy spot and relax. You're likely to have a friendly villager join you! *Instruments used* • Accordion - live Weltmeister accordion, played by rud! • Live acoustic guitar • Live mini nylon guitar • Live five-string electric bass • Synth melody - Logic ES2 (sound sculpted by rud) • Electric piano - Keyscape Suitcase Rhodes • Drums - Logic Drum Kit

Drawing a bit from Wild World, except I wanted to play especially with rhythm here, creating some musical gestures as though they were modules, and then piecing them together like a puzzle until it all felt complete. The final sound resembles Nintendo digital fusion, but I'd like to think with my own twist on it. After some Junction visiting, it's nice to come back home and relax for a bit to process everything you've gotten done! Perhaps you've visited Franklin's restaurant Junction, and learned more about how to cook any ingredients you've been gardening! Feel free to set up a kitchen space to cook dishes at home, or even an outdoor space to make it a cookout! Wherever you set it, you can invite villagers to come by and have a taste of what you make. Maybe you'll find some of them have pickier palates than others, and maybe you'll find that some dishes have more steps or require more time than others. Either way, the more you cook with friends and neighbors, the more recipes they'll share with you, and the more renowned you'll be as a local chef extraordinaire! *Instruments used* • Piano - Keyscape Yamaha C7 • Synth - Dexed Yamaha DX7 PIPES 2 patch • Marimba - Logic Sampler • Woodblocks - East West Japanese Woodblocks • Drums - Logic Drum Machine Designer

Another instance of branching out which instruments I used: I wanted to try both a classic choice of clavinet, inspired by GameCube's 3 PM theme, and a new choice of bassoon! Decorate your town with all sorts of items you procure from exploring Junctions! Let's say you went to a ski lodge Junction, where you could participate in a little skiing activity. Your ski coach would first reward you with little items, maybe a snow globe or some ski gear to keep. As you keep returning, the rewards might turn larger, like decorative slalom flags or moguls, or even a way to customize your town's trees and grass with perpetual snow! And if you really developed a penchant for skiing, your ski coach would allot you the largest prizes: perhaps an alpine background or home design to set your town's scene, and your very own installable ski slope so you can ski in your town! And that's just one Junction, you can mix and match the items you receive from any of them! *Instruments used* • Drums - Simmons SDS-V • Bassoon - East West Hollywood Woodwinds • Clavinet - Keyscape Vibanet • Horn Synth - Dexed Yamaha DX7 HORN SEC.A patch • Electric piano - Keyscape Wurlitzer 200A (my favorite)

Brewster is here to get you a fresh coffee, or to show you how to make it if you're interested! You can even work behind the counter with him as a barista, if you can figure out the menu and give customers their favorite varieties of coffee! This one comes from the sparseness of New Leaf's soundtrack, but with warm acoustic instruments to pass the time after noon. Here's an example of a Junction you can visit: meeting Blathers at an archaeological dig site! If you talk to Blathers, you can sign up for a timed fossil hunt, in which you unearth fossils with a trusty shovel, assess what kind of dinosaur part they are, and then have to reconstruct the dino or dinos in the proper order! For completing a skeleton, or even just for participating, Blathers will reward you with items unique to this Junction—for instance, pottery that's been unearthed, or fossil-themed fashion items. If you keep returning to this Junction to really show you're passionate about these dinos and archaeology, then Blathers will eventually agree to visit your town, setting up a fossil museum and showing you that fossils can be found there. It's all optional! If you want it in your town, check out the Junction for it! *Instruments used* • Live clarinet • Live Excelsior accordion • Live ukulele • Electric piano - Keyscape Rhodes • Drums - Logic Drum Set

It's another one heavily inspired by the unique style of the GameCube title. It also gives the apex of the day a more active tempo and rhythm. All aboard! Porter returns in Animal Crossing: Taking Root to let you board one of the most important features of the game: the train. (Or bullet train, or tram, or several customizable options!) You use the train to visit Junctions, little stations based off a certain activity, like a sport or a hobby. When a Junction is open, you'll probably find a special character there who can teach you the activity and sign you up to try it. You'll probably find some other interested villagers there as well! There are many Junctions, but they rotate which ones are open, so you won't be overwhelmed with things to get done in a single day. Though, you can visit some Junctions in their off-hours, if you prefer to just hang out and see the sights. Just ask Porter if you need help! *Instruments used* • Bass - Dexed Yamaha DX7 STRINGS 8 patch, and a sample from Waffles' Pik Pack • Melody - Dexed Yamaha DX7 FLUTE 2 patch • Drums - Roland TR-606 • Kalimba - East West Ra • Woodblocks - East West Hollywood Percussion • Triangle - sample from the Waffles Pik Pack

Here I'm showing a little love for the more modern sound of Animal Crossing, with a bit more complex harmony, but still the laid back brush drum set that keeps everything feeling very friendly. Well look who it is! In Animal Crossing: Taking Root, Isabelle has been promoted to mayor of this fine town! She's had a little experience as acting mayor before, but she still knows what a big undertaking it is full-time, so she can often use your help adjusting to mayoral duties! From small things like how formally she's supposed to dress, to big things like how much space her office takes up in the town! You could make this a big town with a town hall, or advise Isabelle to keep it comfy in a home office. She could even be a hands-off mayor and just visit on special occasions. However she runs the town, she trusts you and gets you the permits to construct and decorate the town to make it a vibrant, memorable community! *Instruments used* • Piano - Keyscape LA Custom C7 • Guitar - Ample Guitar Lite • Tuba - East West Hollywood Brass (Solo Tuba) • Drums - Logic Drum Kit (Speakeasy)

The GameCube title's soundtrack in particular inspired this one, there's something rather quaint about these relatively "small" sounds coming together. But I also freshened up this tune with a few little meter changes here and there. A town isn't a home without a community to share it with! You'd start off with a few villagers who would've wanted to return from their island tours, such as the friendly but staunchly Cranky villager, Wolfgang. But to really make this town something special, you'll want to make some more friends and invite them over! Just note that you don't necessarily have to customize the town to exactly the interests of your neighbors. Who knows, maybe there are aesthetics or activities Wolfgang and company never even knew they'd enjoy! *Instruments used* • Organ - Dexed Yamaha DX-7 E.ORGAN 1 • Bass - Logic Synth E-Bass (the G.O.A.T.) • Logic standard marimba • Drum machine - Roland CR-78

It's time to start dipping into the quirkiness that made classic Animal Crossing music so charming. I gave this track a curious mood to inspire more exploration around one's town, while keeping it a laid back bossa vibe. The overarching goal of Animal Crossing: Taking Root is about "taking root" in this older town back on the mainland, and getting it back on the map. And of course, the Nook family is happy to help! Provided you're willing to help with finances, of course... Timmy and Tommy would run Nook's Cranny once again, although the scope and look of the shop will change as the town gets more talked about. This early in the day, you might find one of the two cleaning outside the shop while the other runs the register inside. Plus it looks like they've set up a little attraction to keep the shop feeling friendly: today it's a game of garden quoits! *Instruments used* • Live log drum • Live djembe • Live electric guitar • Guiro - Logic Latin Kit • Synth - Dexed FM synth xylophone patch

I really wanted this one to feel like a "waking up" theme, as I imagined this would be the threshold after which most villagers are definitely active. With the sun fully up, it's time to start today's activities. One of the first of many things you can do in this new-but-familiar town is set up a garden! Design it how you like, plant or transplant all sorts of decorative plants or crops, give them some care every day, and eventually, you'll have a beautiful garden to enjoy. And perhaps you'll harvest some fruits, veggies, herbs, seeds, nuts... all the ingredients you need to cook some lovely garden-variety dishes! Who knows, maybe someday you could even talk to Leif about installing a greenhouse, if you're set on expanding your garden! There are many possibilities with how to use the space in this town... *Instruments used* • Live clarinet • Drums - Logic Drum Kit • Castanets - Waffles' Pik Pack • Bass - Logic Sampler • Accordion - Dexed FM accordion patch • Chords - Sculpture synth • Played in the key of F major, A ≈ 450.

This one introduces an instrument essential to the Animal Crossing sound, in my view: the Rhodes. It was all over Wild World, and it's provided a warm wash of color ever since. Your surroundings seem as though they're waking up, filled with color from the early morning sunlight. Trees bear decadent new fruit, and some insects are active while the day is nice and quiet. In fact, it's a fair bit quieter than the time you remember on the island... maybe today could go toward finding a bit of company? Stopping by a friend, or making a new one? It's only 7 AM, there's so much potential for what the day could bring... Also, fun little detail I thought of while painting this. In this game, trees would not grow fruit perfectly symmetrical by default. They'd grow with some natural randomness in position and rotation, making an orchard look a tiny bit more natural. You'd need to water and tend to a newborn tree for it to grow perfectly positioned fruit... which could yield a chance of a particularly high-value fruit growing. *Instruments used* • Live whistling • Rhodes - Keyscape Rhodes - Classic • Live shaker • Conga - East West Ra

Picture the sun just starting to rise in the east along a misty orange horizon, painting the water's surface with early-morning flecks of sunshine. This rendition of Animal Crossing sees you moving back to the mainland after spending time with the Island Getaway package, in a sort of sequel to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. So this view of the sea would be a little look back at where you've been, while the sun rising from it beckons a new beginning! *Instruments used* • Live ukulele • Piano - Keyscape Classical C7 Grand • Drum machine - Roland TR-606 • Bass - live electric five-string bass

Square Breathing - Extended

bMzdAVqnK0k | 29 Dec 2020

Square Breathing - Extended

Square Breathing is a meditative exercise in which, at a slow tempo, you inhale, hold, exhale, and hold your breath, creating a "square" pattern of breathing. This video and its music are designed to guide you, changing every 4 seconds to signal when to advance to the next step in the cycle. Do not continue with it if this method of breathing begins to feel uncomfortable. However, if it does feel comfortable enough, or if you'd like to simply listen to the audio itself and loop it seamlessly, you can find this track on BandCamp and download it for free: https://scruffymusic.bandcamp.com/track/square-breathing-extended-10-min

But then it transitions into the theme for Lavender Town's claim to fame, the Pokémon Tower. While the town is known for creepy, off-kilter Ghost-type Pokémon, there's also an air of lamentation over Pokémon that have passed, especially in the graveyard within the tower. So I made the music a bit wistful and macabre, and I included some Pokémon calls that you would hear there. Finally, I infused some Javanese gamelan into the melody. I've fond memories of playing in a gamelan ensemble, and these melodies seemed to lend themselves to the style! Thanks for listening!

I often think about contemporary music, especially for a solo instrument, as a representation of some imaginary landscape. Hopefully this the first in a series of musical topographies. B Flat Gym - Pokémon Bass and Treble Concept

To play with the compositional style of the Pokémon franchise, and test out some virtual instruments, I've arranged/composed some music under the story of a fictional Pokémon game, Pokémon Bass and Pokémon Treble! The game would take place in a region inspired by a Louisianan bayou, and feature gameplay and new Pokémon based off of music and musical instruments. This is a composition for the Water-type Pokémon gym; I composed the melody in the angular style of one of my biggest jazz piano influences, Thelonious Monk. Big thanks to DavoGato for creating the gym building concept design!! And thanks to Silvia Winter (@SilviaWinterArt on Twitter) for surprising me with these wonderful logos! Video games offer unique challenges to crafting sounds and music, because timing them is dependent on a player's actions. I recently finished my first main-line Pokémon game: Pokemon Emerald Version, and I was charmed the whole way through! The Ballad of the Wind Fish - Arranged as 3 Different Legends

I'm very excited for Nintendo's new take on The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. I like to consider it a retelling of that legend, which inspired me to arrange one of its wonderful melodies in three different styles, based on retold legends! In the first, I tried to remain somewhat faithful to the original instrumentation, as though you're hearing it from a secondary source. In the second, it's a legend from the old American west, told perhaps at a campfire. In the third, it's a more modern urban legend: I got inspired by the themes of movies and TV shows that deal with otherworldly legends and myths. The big game concept is called Super Mario Symphony, and all the worlds are based around genres of music. Beatburg would be based both on electronic music and chiptune music, and thus gameplay would revolve around rhythm-based obstacles, note blocks, and 2D pixellated sections akin to Super Mario Odyssey. What Do Microwaves Hum?

New year, new trivia video! Wear headphones for the full experience. Hello! I'm Scruffy, and today I'm going to show you some trivia about your microwave oven! Specifically I'm looking at some special traits of the various hums it produces, and what makes it hum in the first place. The new year and the science tour Brain Candy Live inspired me to try a science video, I hope you enjoy it! None of the visual figures in this video are to scale except for the multi-frequency metering at 2:47. Sounds were recorded personally or public domain on freesound.org. I Heard Royal Thunder - An Eclipse Poem

I was fortunate to witness last week's solar eclipse in totality, and I thought I'd share my thoughts about it in this poem with original visuals and experimental sound effects! I hope you enjoy it. The sound in the background is all taken from a field recording I made during totality. Here are the words: The clouds looked like plastic bags. Synthetic and grey, lighter around the edges, sagging with air pockets. But today the forecast ignored the overcast. I stepped outside to find the Sun veiled with this polymeric shield, already half-eaten but still blooming with glare. The square and the rooftops overflowed with scientists, photographers, vendors, spectators, and honoraries of each. Finally we could all rediscover these dancing satellites, finally we could exploit the rules about where in the sky our eyes can turn. Or did the sky beg to differ? The plastic piled and folded, ballooned and billowed, not with the pristine clean little squeaks and squeals, but with a growing growl. Lightning flashed, eclipsing the celestial grasp of attention. I heard a woman exclaim, "God says He's in control. I heard royal thunder. I ask for a drum call, and he gave us thunder." And the storm drew in, and the light went out… In the dark, the illusory dark, with the tempest looming above. Only after the last sliver of sun was swallowed did the world slow to a dim crawl. It wasn't quite dusk, but it certainly wasn't the warm diffusion it had been. The sky, the storm; the moment was precisely frozen in time. Stilled, enclosed, bounded, crystallized. Humbled. The naked eye could discern anything, it could chart a panorama of heavens and earth, clear and cold. But it would find everything motionless, all breath simultaneously held for this grand fermata of shadow. Abruptly a crumb of sunlight corrupted this stasis, reminding time, space, and people to breathe. To breathe a roar of applause. To breathe the rumble of thunder. To breathe a wistful sigh for that moment when everything was cold, when the day was comatose and minutes didn’t matter. No one cried, not even the clouds, that such a dream had to end. All eyes just looked away, their ceremony submitting to instinct, and estranged the crescent sun. Hands packed up towels, glasses, masks, and compartments of luggage. Feet clamored for the crosswalks and coffee shops by the hundreds. Minds thought of rain, wind, and lightning, but all were overshadowed by time. Time was the true precipitation, it doused us with a cloudburst of commotion. After all, to see the sunlight, even behind a sheet of atmosphere, is to see the day passing you by, right? Drag-Select Bird - Test Animation

Today I wanted to show you a 2D animation test I made in Blender. I'm trying out a new stylized approach to animation based on "drag-select," or shaping rectangular planes using a single vertex. So I decided to drag-select-animate a little bird minding its own business. I hope you enjoy it! This was also an exercise in Blender camera tracking, so technically this was a rotoscope of stock footage. Footage used under Creative Commons License with Permission: Mountain Bluebird by KyZaK Media. I hope to develop this style more as I continue exploring animation possibilities in Blender!

Awakening Wood 80's Pop Remix - Pikmin 2 in First Person! Soundtrack

A bit of the soundtrack I arranged to my Pikmin 2 in First Person video! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTrt3MVANpk) It's an 80's pop reimagining of most of the Awakening Wood theme from Pikmin 2. I studied quite a bit of 80's pop to come up with these synthesized sounds and their orchestration, as well as several VHS videos and the soundtrack to the indie horror game "Tattletail" to come up with the distorted bit at 1:34 (which I used to introduce the program Dolphin in the video). It may be a weird set of resources, but it all informed this retro mood. I hope you enjoy it!

The first part is just a ballad with a similar form to the original tune, while the second is a strange waltz I decided to arrange because it sounded nice and airy. In this extended version, I end up mixing the two genres! Instruments in the order they are introduced: Pad synthesizer Electronic drum kit Electric ukelele Bass melodica "Electric guitar" (0:46, actually that's me doing an impersonation) Medieval flutes Hammer dulcimer

It's all a loose arrangement using the Wistful Wild melody. Over #2 it's a funky ballad, enough said. Over #3 it's more lively, including a bit of music about normal textures inspired by Indian raga music! Apparently the Wistful Wild melody works in a raga musical mode, called a "thaat." Specifically this is Thaat Bhairavi, which is equivalent to the Phrygian mode. That was a pleasant surprise! Here's my take on one of the creepiest tracks from the Pikmin 2 soundtrack, the Submerged Castle theme. I hope you enjoy it, if you dare... ...and I hope you have a happy Halloween!

Pikmin 15th Anniversary Theme

In collaboration with Pikipedia, I arranged a medley of memorable themes from the three Pikmin games to celebrate Pikmin's 15th anniversary. I hope you enjoy it! See the anniversary video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9u1qh0L1So Hajime Wakai composed these amazing themes, and I cannot thank him enough for his work on the Pikmin series. I also used an excerpt from the tribute concert Symphonic Legends - Music from Nintendo, arranged by Hayato Matsuo and performed by the WDR Rundfunkorchester Köln. I also sampled a string section excerpt from Super Mario Galaxy, which was composed by Mahito Yokota and Koji Kondo.

Pikmin 2 Sound Effect Trivia

I'm back for another dissection of Pikmin 2! This time I'm explaining 7 points of trivia about the sound effects in the game using a raw dump of internal sounds. I'll cover the voice of Pikmin and how you can achieve it, unearth some inside info on the chirps and calls of beasts, and even engage a very tenacious Gatling Groink in a soundalike contest. I hope you find it interesting! I couldn't have found how to extract these sounds without the help of my friend Espyo; you can find his Youtube account here: https://www.youtube.com/user/srb2Espyo/videos Instructions on extracting the sounds and more cool notes about the innards of Pikmin 2 can be found here: https://tcrf.net/Pikmin_2 https://tcrf.net/Notes:Pikmin_2 Espyo and I edit on Pikipedia, your one-stop wiki for everything Pikmin. If you ever need a Pikmin question answered, look no further! http://www.pikminwiki.com/ I also used some sounds from other Nintendo games in this video, thanks to the help of The Sounds Resource, a site dedicated to extracting sounds from video games. Give the site a once-over if you ever need some video game foley! http://www.sounds-resource.com

Pikmin Forever - Mycelial Burrow

Pikmin Forever - Mycelial Burrow

A mellow cave theme for the Mycelial Burrow, along with different mixes for facing enemies or carrying items. Mushroom Pikmin are discovered here; the whole theme of the cave is fungi. It was all made using one acoustic bass guitar, with heavy effects on plucking, producing harmonics, bowing, slapping, and strumming the tuning peg portion of the strings. I hope you enjoy it!

Pikmin 2 Title Screen Quirks

Pikmin 2 Title Screen Quirks

This video demonstrates some of the interesting parameters used in the title screen of Pikmin 2. I hope you find them interesting! At 1:13, I look at parameters for the title screen in general. At 5:37, I look at more specific parameters for the Pikmin that form the logo of the game. At 8:07, I look into BOID parameters, which govern the flock-like movement of Pikmin when they aren't stationed in their logo. I hope to demonstrate how much effort was put into making this title screen not only detailed, but able to work under many Boids scenarios.

Pikmin Forever Day 1 Tutorial

A quaint theme for the first day, in which Olimar relearns how to control Pikmin. Its melody contains a hint of Forest of Hope, transfigured in many different ways. The softer section of electric piano is for when Olimar is explaining something through monologue.

Pikmin Forever - Lipidon's Theme

Pikmin Forever - Lipidon's Theme

A weird theme (and combat, item, and task variations) for a weird enemy, the Lipidon. It's a fatty Breadbug that just swallows items instead of dragging them to its den. I took a lot of inspiration from the style of cave music in Pikmin 2, as well as the look and sounds of the Giant Breadbug. I hope you enjoy it!

An electronic composition I designed after messing around with a simple square wave sample and fluent tempo change. It has at least two distinct parts; I suppose you could call them "movements." I hope you enjoy it!
