Japan' has 3 million tourists a year brining in a lot of suitcases so Japan Airlines and Sumitomo created a Rental Clothing service for tourists. Yes, you can leave your clothes at home, leave your big suitcase at home and have your clothes sent to your hotel in Japan. It seemed like an interesting concept to me so I decided to try it out - Any Wear, Anywhere - on a trip to Hokkaido. I ordered a Spring / Autumn set and a Winter set. The Japanese Square Watermelon is rare to find, they only make 200 to 400 a year depending on the harvest. Promising round watermelons are places in metal and glass boxes, bolted in and grow for 2-3 weeks until the corners hit the ends of the box. The success rate for growing square watermelons is low, 10-25% for many farmers. The history of the square watermelon traces back to Zentsuji, Kagawa where Yamashita-san wanted to make a watermelon that was easy to transport and also fit nicely in a refrigerator. He succeeded but the fruit was too expensive and only lasted about a week after harvest. The plan to market them changed in the 1970s when he cut them unripe with low sugar content to keep them from decaying. Now they're ornamental or display fruit, like art! 00:00 Start 01:26 Square Watermelon Farm (Zentsuji) 02:23 Time Lapse of Square Watermelon Growing 02:58 Opening the Metal Box 04:38 Square Watermelons in Tokyo 05:27 Cutting it Open & Eating 06:00 Why Not Sold Ripe 07:18 History of Square Watermelon 08:20 New Generation of Farmers 09:05 Square Watermelon Success Rate 😳 10:40 Square Waterelon Harvest Day 13:02 Boxing Square Watermelons for Sale 13:47 Press Conference with Media 14:37 Future of Square Watermelons 15:19 John on Japanese News 15:43 Conclusion That you to Zentsuji City, JA Kagawa, Yamashita-san & family, Sugimoto-san and the hard working farmers of Zentsuji 全通寺 🍉 Where is Zentsuji? https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZYqsxdNbTHshrEJg8 An hour from Okayama Station on Shikoku Island, Kagawa prefecture. #watermelon #Japan #squarewatermelon

Eating out in Tokyo is an adventure, especially in Shinjuku - Tokyo's busiest area with over 3.5M people going through Shinjuku Station daily! There are over 1500 restaurants around the station serving food like Sushi, Wagyu Beef, Yakiniku & Shabushabu, Tempura, Yakitori, Ramen and with so many options, it can be very hard to pick a good one, especially if you don't speak Japanese. This time, I'm with Sho of Magical Trip who will share his local knowledge on Shinjuku and its restaurants, Japanese cuisine and the deepest parts of the city. Shipwrecked on a deserted volcanic island in the Pacific, a 14 year old fisherman from Kochi, Japan, survives to live a life that helps change the path of modern Japan! The story of Nakahama "John Mung" Manjiro is one of the most unforgettable ones, from his rescue after months on a deserted volcanic island to being the first Japanese to live in the USA. Because of the policy of Sakoku, Japan closed to the world, Manjiro cannot return home to see his mother without being executed for leaving Japan, but like all adventurers, he tries to find a way! The bond between Manjiro and his rescuer, Captain William Whitfield of Fairhaven, MA is inspirations and from this American and Japanese relation starts the relationship between the two governments when Perry's Expedition of Black Ship Squadron to Edo (now Tokyo) ends Japan's 220 year isolation. Manjiro's experiences in America, as a Samurai employed by the Shogun in Edo, shapes the relationship and friendship into the Meiji Era. Today we're at a Vintage Japanese Toy Museum in Hokkaido exploring the innovative toys that changed our world! Toys from Japan have always been creative, from the 1954 Godzilla movie on, character toys sparked the imagination of generations. From cinema and TV, the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s brought us Kamen Rider, Ultraman, Super Sentai and many others still popular today. The 80s also brought us the Nintendo revolution, a company that started selling cars and paper models to the Ultra Machine and Ultra Hand, it broke out with the Family Computer (Famikon) in 1983 and the NES in 1985 in the USA then the Gameboy which put it all in your pocket. The 2000s is really the digital age, less toys - more about nostalgia with toys sold as much to adults as kids. The future looks mostly digital and I'll be back for Part 2! Thank you to Matt Alt for making the trip to Hokkaido with me to check out Wakaki-san's store and museum. 80% of Japanese High School students prefer uniforms. It's the opposite to western countries - but why? Japanese School Uniforms are an important part of the country's culture - students associate it with their youth. But why do school have different styles, how have uniforms evolved the last 100 years? How much do school uniforms cost in Japan and what do students need to buy? What are the rules for Japanese school uniforms? We'll visit the KANKO Uniform factory in Okayama for a tour inside as they make a Sailor Fuku outfit from factory to classroom. High school students also like to wear uniforms outside of school and there is a market for non-school uniforms for their cuteness and style. We'll join some uniform models in Harajuku, Tokyo and ask them what the latest Japanese youth trends are as well as why they prefer school uniforms to their own clothes. 00:00 Start 00:55 Inside Japanese High School Classroom 01:20 What's so special about uniforms? 01:42 Girl's Sailor Fuku Uniform 02:15 Boy's School Uniform in Okayama 03:27 Why some don't prefer uniforms? 03:51 Why Japanese Love School Uniforms 05:35 School Generational Divide on Uniforms 06:48 Inside School Uniform Factory 07:05 Sailor Fuku Uniform History 10:35 School Uniform Costs in Japan 11:10 Uniform Production Schedule 11:46 School Uniform Trends 12:16 Harajuku, Tokyo - After School Uniforms 12:44 What's in fashion now? 13:23 She likes Ribbons! 14:19 Gakuran, Student Uniform 15:28 Japanese School Uniform Rules 16:04 USA & School Uniforms? 16:49 What do you think? #schooluniforms #onlyinjapan

Gyoza dumplings are a Japanese food I can eat anyway, every day! They're more than a snack, they can be the main meal and in Miyazaki City, it's so popular, they're no.1 in Japan in the Yaki Gyoza Rankings, for 3 straight years. What makes their gyoza the best or most popular in Japan? Gyoza has the image of being a side dish, I ask Cody of Ramen Guide Japan if that's the case. The answer: never mind! I think Gyoza is better than Ramen and I am sure viewers will let me hear it in the comments. Hiroshima's modern history is well known, the atomic bomb dropped at 8:15am on August 6, 1945 destroying nearly everything in a 4 mile (7 km) radius. It also took out 108 of the city's 122 street cars run by Hiroshima Electric Co known as Hiroden. Believe it or not, only 72 hours after the bomb was dropped, Hiroden had repaired 3 stations near the bomb's hypocenter and was running service to passenger on August 9th. We'll ride Tram no.653 and examine Tram no.651 which was derailed and burned out, now back on the street shuttling passengers, the grandchildren of Hiroshima residents. We will also talk to the then 14 year old conductor who is not 92 about her experience, surviving the bomb and going back to work just 3 days after the Atomic Bomb. It's an unforgettable story and a new way to learn about the tragedy of Hiroshima during WWII, through the eyes of its public transportation. The Hot Food Vending Machine Park in Sagamihara is one of the best places to see Japanese Vending Machine history - machines range from the 1950s to today. The owner, Saito-san has been collecting and repairing old vending machines since 2016 to please waiting customers at his tire business, and his hobby has become a treat for everyone who wants hot food served from a vending machine. Japanese Hot Food Vending Machines are becoming extinct. Since its peak in 1985 when 250,000 food machines were all over the country, it's rare to find one these days. The reason: Convenient Stores. The quality and price has gotten to the point where the machines are obsolete. Where is the Sagamihara Vending Machine Park? The world's most beautiful tree is a 1,000 year old Japanese Sakura - Cherry Blossom tree. The Benizakura variety or "Pink Weeping" Sakura changes colors in spring from pink to white. This tree is on a hill, easy to see. The town has made a path around it to see every angle. In the fall, resident volunteers ready it for the winter snows so it's not damaged. Japanese Wagyu Beef is one of the most tender steaks in the world, A5 ranked Kobe Beef may be the most famous Wagyu brand in the world, this Snow-aged Wagyu Beef from Niigata may have it beat. There are 350 Wagyu beef brands through Japan's 47 prefectures and this time we'll focus on another aspect of Wagyu that impacts the eating experience - aging. There's Wet aging which is the most popular in Japan. There's dry aging which is rare with Wagyu because it requires cutting away a good percentage of the meat which is already quite tender. Then there's snow aging which aged in a Yukimuro - Japanese Snow Cellar - for a month. High humidity, constant 1℃ / 34°F even in the height of summer. The snow packed around the storage unit is preserved until the next packing in March. How does Snow-aged Wagyu Beef taste? How do you cook it? Is it really better? Japan's country roads are scenic and memorable, especially when you construct a road with grooves to play music when tires go over it at 60km/hr! Melody Roads メロディーロード (Musical Roads) were invented by Shizuo Shinoda in the 1980s and the first one constructed in East Hokkaido's Nakashibetsu Town. I traveled out there to meet him and drive his amazing invention, the Melody Road. It was a crazy idea that he made a reality as an invention to bring happiness to drivers. There are 30 melody roads around Japan. We look at 4 of them in this episode. Japanese Macaque aka SNOW MONKEY bathing at the Jigokudani Hot Spring waters of Nagano is one of Japan's most iconic sights. But there is more to this story than just monkeys in a hot tub. This park has a special mission: to protect the resident monkeys and care for them through the hard winter. Staff have been doing that since the park opened in 1964, but it was in 1970 when LIFE Magazine put the Japanese Snow Monkey on the front cover that curiosity for the Japanese Macaque really grew. Despite being in a remote area of Japan, it gets many visitors from around the world. The Japanese Macaque’s life here is dedicated to a 4 season cycle. SPRING: babies are born, monkeys start shedding their winter coats SUMMER: a lot of activity, playing in the mountain forests FALL: monkeys start mating, bathing food and growing out their coats for winter. Female monkey pregnancy lasts for 6 months. If babies were born in the winter, they wouldn't survive so the cycle of life to give birth only in spring is essential for the whole troupes survival here in the mountainous north. This is the only place you’ll find Japanese monkeys bathing, soaking. The Japanese Macaque is the northern most primate besides humans and they have significance spiritually to Japan for thousands of years. "A5" Graded Wagyu Beef is considered the best in Japan ー but what does that score really mean? We'll go inside to talk to the Wagyu Beef inspectors on the job at the Yonezawa Meat Processing Center to learn how they do it using the BMS (Beef Marbling Standard) and Beef Yield. After inspection and grading, we'll see them cut and distribute the beef to restaurants and supermarkets and try some of the A5 Wagyu special dishes famous in Yonezawa like its Gyu Nabe -- also known as Sukiyaki. Japanese Wagyu Beef is quite different from other beef around the world and within Japan, there are so many regional brands. It's hard to know what the difference is between Kobe Beef and say, Yonezawa Beef other than the branding, but there are factors that can change the taste like climate, elevation, feed, housing conditions, treatment of livestock, and water. 00:00 Start 00:53 Meat Inspection 01:42 Wagyu BMS - Beef Marbling Standard 04:48 Cutting Wagyu 06:18 Cutting for Supermarkets 10:15 Butcher's Shop Pricing 11:05 Sukiyaki Lunch 12:45 Wagyu Farm Cattle Ranch 14:08 What do Wagyu eat 14:34 Biogas in Japan 15:58 Yonezawa Beef Dinner 18:27 Yonezawa Station Shinkansen 🥩 Read more about Yonezawa and its beef: https://japantoday.com/category/features/food/yonezawa-gyu-a-tender-tasty-treat Other WAGYU stories from Japan: Snow-aged Wagyu Beef: ▶︎ https://youtu.be/SeUr6jYnmtM Japanese Wagyu Omi Beef farm to table Story: ▶︎ https://youtu.be/B8FDP9ZNNPY Places Visited in Yonezawa: 📍Where is Yonezawa? Ginzan Onsen Hot Spring Village in winter - with the snow falling - may be the most magical sight in Japan, especially at night. It has become one of Japan's most popular hot springs and the Ryokan, Traditional Japanese Inns lining the Ginzan River are all top notch accommodations with Kaiseki dinner course and breakfast. WIth the snow falling, we'll first stay at Kozankaku's riverside room, visit the nearby Shirogane-yu public bath. We'll end with 2 nights at Notoya Ryokan, welcoming guests since it opened in 1925. It looks like a scene from a Ghibli-film after dark. HISTORY of Ginzan Onsen ♨️ Ginzan was originally a silver mine in the 16th century until the silver was mined out. It changed to a hot spring town in the 17th century, hidden in the mountains, a long one-day walk from Obanazawa. In 1913, a flood destroyed the town but with local investment, they quickly rebuilt into the village we know today. It has maintained it's Taisho era feel with gas lamps and old wooden architecture, foot bridges crossing all along the Ginzan River. In Japan, cleaning is more than a job, it's part of the culture, like an art. Anyone who has been to Tokyo knows it's one of the cleanest cities in the world and to keep it that way, it takes a team of dedicated professionals who are often un-noticed - meaning they're doing an excellent job! We'll take a detailed look at how JR East Environment Access (JEA) keeps JR Ueno Station super clean and safe for the 180,000 daily passengers and it's a microcosm of how the entire city stays so clean. Ueno Station is a stop for the Shinkansen and platform 13 1/2 is where the Train Suite Shiki-Shima departs. The jingles and melodies you'll hear throughout the station, the announcements and trains rolling through is super nostalgic. Japan makes some of the world's best fireworks including record breaking giant sized shells like the Yonshakudama! We'll head to a prestigious fireworks factory in Akita to see how they're made. The process includes 1) Milling 2) Granulation 3) Loading 4) Pasting The secrets of the trade are passed down from one generation to the next, family businesses that have been producing fireworks since the Meiji era. The larger the firework shell, the longer it takes to grow the stars or black pellets needed. They start as ceramic balls the size of a sesame seed and grow day by day, taking a month or more to make a Shakudama 3cm star. The Shakudama is a 18.5kg / 19 lb beast that you'll see launched at festivals outside Tokyo and urban areas. They get larger than that! Japan's Extreme North in Hokkaido is home to some super frigid towns like Kitami, Rikubetsu, and Abashiri. In the middle of winter, at night, one town has a massive meat festival -- and it's outdoors in below zero temperatures. It's the world's coldest BBQ festival with over 2,000 people attending together to grill Kitami's famous pork short rib cuts called Karubi and other meat like wagyu, horumon and sausages. I drove north from Sapporo to experience it and eat as much local barbecue as my stomach could hold. On the way, I stopped in Rikubetsu and spent a night at the town's roadhouse where temperatures dropped to -27C / -16.6F at 11pm. The coldest record night here is -38.4 Celsius or -37.1 Fahrenheit on February 7, 2019. Note: The coldest temperature recorded in Japan was -41 degrees Celsius (-42 degrees Fahrenheit) in Asahikawa in January 1902. When the Tokyo Summer Games were cancelled in 2020, I was very upset because as a resident of this city, many of us had been looking forward to the seeing our Tokyo shine on the world stage and the greatest hosts ever. One year later, in a situation many consider to be worse than a year before, the city and the IOC went ahead to plan the world's biggest sporting event in the most challenging situation possible. For residents of the host city, what would be left to experience since spectators to venues were banned, events canceled, the city in a state of emergency. Japan's Bullet-train or Shinkansen is super fast, traveling at speeds of 350km/hr through wide landscapes of rice paddies of north Japan. This is the Tohoku-Hokkaido Shinkansen and in this episode we'll ride from Tokyo Station to Shin-Aomori in regular and GRAN CLASS cars eating 7 gourmet ekiben, Japanese Train Food. Joining me on this adventure is Peter von Gomm and we'll be eating our way across Tohoku. ★ What is an EKIBEN? It's a Bento (Japanese gourmet boxed lunch) sold at express train station to be eaten on the Shinkansen or special rapid trains. It is always prepared fresh using local ingredients highlighting the regions gastronomical attractions. This variety of sushi is a lost art and unknown outside Japan. The elaborate designs and use of the ingredients create beauty from food. This is SAIKU SUSHI and was quite popular in the Showa era but has sadly disappeared. Today, Yuki Sugeta and his sushi apprentice Issei Meguro from Takasago Sushi in Tokyo will prepare over a dozen designs of sushi in the shape of seasonal flowers, fish and animals like 75 years ago. When you eat sushi, you're not just eating raw fish on rice - you're eating the years of experience each chef has practiced their craft, perfecting it so you come back for more. Tokyo's Sushi restaurants are competitive, I'll be back not just because the sushi is excellent - it is - but because the chef is friendly - and speaks a little English too :) Where is Takasago Sushi? https://goo.gl/maps/ZKQJF3fS4k2GBN8w9 Call ahead for reservations - takeout is available. Japan is a very active earthquake country and in Tokyo, the fire department is making sure residents are ready for the next one. This Japanese condiment, spicy-salty citrus is still unknown to many will change the way you enjoy your food forever. Yuzukosho (柚子胡椒) is by far my favorite Japanese condiment or seasoning, better than wasabi and Japanese mayonnaise. It's found in Kochi prefecture on Shikoku Island and I traveled there to see it farmed and made at the factory. Yuzu Kosho is a simple recipe of fermented Yuzu rinds, salt, green chili peppers without seeds and Yuzu juice added to taste and consistency. The salt content also helps preserve it longer. ▶︎ What foods does Yuzu Kosho go well with? Japanese Green Tea has a lot of health benefits, but did you know the water temperature can change a lot of those - and significantly alter the taste? This time, I travel to Fuji City in Shizuoka to visit 2 green tea masters called “cha-shi” who will tell us how to make the perfect cup and how to control the taste with temperature, explain the benefits – and how to get the most out of each drop! Varieties of Green Tea in Fuji City ① Sencha 煎茶 (1st flush, Japan's most popular tea) ② Fukamushi Sencha 深蒸し煎茶 (Steamed sencha) ③ Kukicha 茎茶 (Twig tea) ④ Bancha 番茶 (2nd flush of Sencha) ⑤ Genmaicha (Added popped rice to Bancha) ⑥ Houjicha ほうじ茶 (Roasted Bancha) Note: Gyocha 玉露 (Matcha 抹茶 is stone ground Gyocha) are typically grown in Kyoto. ★ What is the perfect temperature for the perfect cup of green tea? Sencha, 70C / 158F for 2-3 minutes If you want more caffeine and a bitter cup, use 100C boiling hot water. Less to no caffeine, use warm 50C water - it'll be sweeter too. When a train crossing meets an 18 meter tall Buddha statue 150 meters away, the scene comes together to make a very unique image. From the right angle, the horizontal red signals line up to make a pair of goggles or sunglasses for the Colossal Buddha of Hotei in Konan city near Nagoya along the Meitetsu Inuyama Line. What makes Japan's top wagyu beef brands so popular? Kobe Beef. Matsuzaka Beef. Omi Beef. These are the top three wagyu brands in Japan historically but in the last 20-30 years Japanese Wagyu brands have really increased. This episode starts the Omi Beef, a Kuroge Wagyu Story. We track the beef back to the ranch in the Omihachiman area near Lake Biwa. Japanese Wagyu Beef has a long history dating back to the Sengaku Period when European missionaries brought their beef eating culture to Japan. During the Tokugawa Shogunate or Edo period, eating 4-legged creatures was banned, but when the Meiji Era (1868) ended the Shogunate, western culture was adapted and gradually Japanese returned to eating tasty wagyu beef in the cities. 🥩 Other Japanese Wagyu Brand episodes: Snow-aged Wagyu Beef Cellar to Restaurant: ▶︎ https://youtu.be/SeUr6jYnmtM How Wagyu Beef I Graded | YONEZAWA BEEF ▶︎ https://youtu.be/HG8f0TX1Zn0 Contents: 00:00 Start 00:59 Kyoto Station to Omi Beef Country 02:09 Map & Drone shots 03:08 Omi Beef Ranch Restaurant 04:26 Wagyu Beef Cattle Farm 07:58 History of Wagyu Beef in Japan 10:50 Inside Meat Locker 11:56 Dinner is served! 12:57 Farm to Table talk w/ Kevin Riley 14:40 Wagyu Sukiyaki 16:55 Leaving the Restaurant - comments Kevin Riley, chef of Kuma's Kitchen joins me for this Farm to Table story. Something to cool you down this summer, a trip to one of the coldest festival in Japan's north, Hokkaido. This is the Noboribetsu Onsen (Hot Spring) Festival and you've never seen anything like this before! Men in thongs throwing water at -10C / 14F temperatures at night. It's a surreal scene and one I got to participate in. History: The event has been taking place since the 1970s as a way to give thanks to the nature around them for the hot springs that provide the local area with jobs. The men battle like Oni in a Cavalry War, one guy riding 2 or 3 others to get the flag or headband. Of course the use of Hot Water which keeps us warm makes the event fun and also a reminder that it also keeps us warm. Fundoshi are traditional Japanese thongs worn in festivals and cultural rituals for many centuries. My name is John Daub, a YouTube creator and reporter in Japan living here for over 23 years. Welcome to the new ONLY in JAPAN (John Daub) Channel which is a continuation of a series I created after the Great Tohoku Earthquake om March 11th, 2011. It was from this disaster which impacted the lives of so many people in Japan that I felt a strong desire to create a show full of positivity and stories about the country I've called home since 1998. It's not easy to start a new channel and I know it will be a real challenge but I feel it's the right thing to do. This particular channel was created in September 2011which traces back to my roots and desires to make this the no.1 show about Japan on YouTube. Thanks for joining this community!
