Kolkata Sector 5 is the telephone scam capital of the world. Although I've reported lots of scam call centers there, nothing seems to happen. So what could be better than turning up at these call centers armed with (harmless) devices which will get the attention of these scam groups and hopefully the rest of the world. Thanks to the engineering skills of Mark Rober and the to Trilogy Media who made the trip to India to confront the scammers themselves, we managed to film a set of pranks via the scammers' own CCTV cameras. Although this is having some fun at the expense of scammers, this is a serious problem. Millions of dollars are lost to these scammers and the police in Kolkata do very little to shut down these call centers, so it would be great if people shared these videos and tweeted @KolkataPolice Let's hope we can make a "shut down" video before long. If you show your relatives any of my videos, this is the one to show. It's possibly the most dangerous scam that there is: it will wipe out your entire bank account if you fall for it. I've had to hold back for over a year before I posted this video because the UK police had to investigate the woman featured here. So you got a fake virus message, but how did it get on to your computer and who is responsible for these messages? PC Protection Help LLP create these fake messages. Not only do they create them, but they periodically log back into the PCs of the people they previously scammed in order to scam them again with yet more popups which the sneakily place on the browser. Unusually, this group are in Jaipur (66/114, Pratap Nagar, Sanganer, Sector 11, Pratap Nagar, Jaipur, Rajasthan 302033, India), but they have a connection in the US. The owner's name appears on all invoices and he pays for their phone services. I teamed up with Scammer Payback and Ownage Pranks to wind up and take down another scamming group. This one is a little unusual because I teamed up with a couple of YouTubers who would wind them up as I watched the scammers' computers. I persuaded a scammer to reveal the tactics he uses in his scams by showing him his own photograph when he connected to my computer. His photos also had a geo-location tag and they were taken from his own apartment in Ghaziabad (East of Delhi). This was enough to convince him to make a video with him breaking down the various aspects of his own scam. I hope this proves interesting. This group of scammers send fake Paypal invoices and try to convince their (usually elderly) victims to login to their online bank whist they have remote access. And it usually ends badly for the victim. This time around however, I managed to find out who they were and I slowly dismantled their scam. This group of scammers have set up 10 fake websites and have managed to get these websites to list high up on Google's search engine thanks to some black-hat SEO operations. But unusually, they also have online chat enabled on these websites. That gave me an idea to flood them with junk chats and I was able to record their reactions... Scammers love gift cards because they're almost untraceable. I noticed that this group of scammers had conned someone into buying $2,000 of Best Buy gift cards, so I took some action to stop prevent them being used and ultimately return the money to the person who was scammed. These messages are designed to alarm potential victims and is a ruse to gain access to people's bank accounts via remote access software. I got an 'invoice' email telling me that I had paid for a $3800 laptop. No links... just a phone number. It's a real shame that these scammers emailed me because I was able to find out exactly who they were and where the were. Enjoy! I witnessed an attempt to scam an elderly man of £32,000 (around $40,000) by a scammer from Kolkata in India. They tried to convince him to go to his local Santander Bank and transfer money to another UK bank account. This video describes their techniques for persuading him to do this and the coaching the gave him to ensure that he complied with their demands. This is one of the most sophisticated phishing scams I have ever seen. The people behind this one are not your average cyber criminals. I hope you find it interesting. *UPDATE* Apparently, the app was created by a Russian scammer by the name Evgeny Semenak, It targets Russians, Chinese & English. The app it seems, checks for several banking apps on your device and, no doubt, steals lots of personal and bank data. DO NOT RUN THIS APP ON YOUR PHONE. HaloTeck.net are scammers from New Delhi (IP: 43.230.105.92) who only want the more vulnerable of victims. Here, I take out one of their scamming machines and contact a large number of victims. These scammers don't make it easy to reclaim your their ill-gotten money though.... In the UK, this video cannot be seen because of a 'defamation' complaint raised by someone claiming to represent Micro PC Support. I am currently fighting this because the video does give an accurate representation of what I experienced on 28/03/2018. It's a pity that YouTube have sided with a scammer! Unusually, these pop-up scammers allowed me to pay by cheque (check in US). Big mistake! When they made their 'fixation' on my PC, they not only made the security worse but they revealed personal details of some of their other victims. Another day, another tech support scam. This time, a UK Freefone number (08000588296) appeared on a fake virus pop-up. I couldn't resist calling them I do my usual thing of letting the scammers access a safe playpen (a virtual machine isolated from my real machine) and record their network activity using Wireshark. The 08000588296 number and the U.S. number +1(844)525-6095 routes to Jaipur in India. Shame that 'Kevin' still insists he's sitting in California :)

I set up a virtual PC to capture the IP address of a scammer then used this IP address to identify the people behind the scam. Sorry for the abrupt ending; I really only intended their ISP to use this and react quickly, so there's little explanation of what I'm doing. The IP address is confirmed to be the 'Ariba Call Center' and they are a customer of MeghbelaBroadband in Kolkata, India. Part 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jllY-8oBsso) describes how I got from the IP address to the Call Centre. 'Ariba Call Centre' is located at 22 Ashutosh Chowdary Ave, Ballygunge Park, Ballygunge Kolkata, West Bengal 700019 India‎ Direct phone number: +91 33 6503 3033 Email: [email protected] Web: http://www.aribacallcenter.in Their website was taken offline for a day after I published the name of the call centre. They claimed that this was for "renewal" reasons. When it reappeared, they removed the links to their directors accounts Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social media. I've reproduced these links below. The site changed again the following day to remove yet more details about the company directors and to remove details of their (legitimate) customers. I guess they fear that this exposure will damage their revenues. So here is a reminder of the original website: http://imgur.com/a/ZHpzW#0 (or just use a Google cache) Their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/aribacallcenter was also removed this once their scam was rumbled on 14/04/2015. Copy of their FB pages here: http://imgur.com/a/9Ag1r#0 Ariba seem to be a real call center with legitimate customers, but their employees seem to enjoy a scamming sideline and have set up sites like http://techconsultancy.services and http://TheTechnicalz.com (note that the latter is identical bar the logo and domain name). I'm sure it's a sheer coincidence that the Technicalz site became unavailable at exactly the same time that Ariba took down their own website and Facebook entry, however the domain registration tells its own story: http://who.is/whois/thetechnicalz.com (look at the history just in case Ariba re-register the domain). Since I published their details, Ariba have carefully removed the UK and US phone numbers from their http://techconsultancy.services site. The phone numbers were UK: +44 116-318-4211 and US: +1 551-226-6078. Related phone numbers are +44 116-318-2304 and +1 212-456-7893. You can still see the numbers looking at the HTML source, a Google cache or this snapshot from 13/04/2015: http://imgur.com/gallery/7eVxBq1 If you look below at the comments, you'll see a reply from Ariba Call Center. Needless to say ACC did not respond to my evidence nor did they answer any questions. They claim that "our IP is being hacked and used by someone else to do fraud activities". Instead of thanking me (if it was a 'hacker' like they claim), they chose to remove all social media the links to their directors, remove their Facebook pages, remove the phone numbers from their scamming websites and accused me of "stalking" them! Bear in mind they phoned me. I'll let you draw your own conclusions as to their responsibility for this scam. They removed their comments in June 2016, but I archived this too: http://pastebin.com/FKPnxPp3 Full audio, video and wireshark traces available to any authorities who need them. Another YouTuber has reported capturing the scam from another IP address in the Ariba Call Centre (223.29.202.248 on 20/05/2015), so the scammers are still up and running :(

I discovered the IP address of an Indian Call Center fraudster who was trying to 'refund' me. They called following up an ammyy scam (you know the one where my computer was reporting a problem etc). I deliberately let them access a honeypot PC which I had set up to record the traffic source. Instead of giving a refund, they use Western Union to _charge_ the victim's credit card. I've reported this to their ISP and to the Indian authorities but this has got nowhere. I think this type of fraud is only aimed at people who fell for the "your computer has reported a problem" scam, but I'd be interested if other people have received calls like this one. The original calls came from a scam outfit called "websupport247.com". See my other videos for the original scam. As of 7th June 2015, I have heard nothing from the police, so I have to assume their bribe worked and no further action is being considered.

Capture of the fraud from a cold call from an India-based call centre. This call was from smartsupportguys.com who make fraudulent claims that my PC has an infection and that I need to pay £169.99 for unnecessary software and support. If you're from a law enforcement agency or have been scammed and need more evidence about this firm's activities, I have make the full recording available. This version just highlights the scam at work. I used an expendable virtual machine and allowed them to remotely access the machine so no personal data was at risk; I've had a few similar companies who attempted to delete stuff once their scam was rumbled.
