We're always playing language games, whether it be with a stranger, where we try to make our meaning as obvious as possible, or with a friend, where we use inside jokes, phrases known only to the other person. 2: There are many reasons comedy is walking on eggshells, I want to be clear, this isn't the only reason. But the other reasons have been beaten to death by everyone and this is one cause that I believe has been hardly explored at all. 3: I say comedians "used to be untouchables". I mean that in the context of the audience. Comedians weren't untouchable to police, who arrested the greats such as Carlin and Bruce, but comedians usually didn't have to fear the crowd. Now comedians aren't scared of the police for saying naughty things, they're scared of the online mob.

Even now, the word "multilevel marketing" is being distanced from, the new new word is "direct selling". Look at the lobbying group Direct Selling Association who is heavily funded by MLMs. I couldn't find the words Multi-Level Marketing anywhere on the website. All this to say, don't let other people control the language of the discussion, otherwise you've lost half the battle. Besides the links I've placed which breadcrumb my research process, there is also a great NPR piece called Good Cop/Bad Cop, I think it's similar to this video, focused on the weird dichotomy between real interrogations and how they actually are carried out. A huge part of it hinges on the idea that a cop can "tell" when you're lying, which is the justification for applying so much pressure during the accusation portion. In recent years this claim has fallen under a lot of scrutiny. Body language isn't as reliable of a signal of lying as we thought. This is one of many criticisms of the Reid technique. Q. Should I ever talk to the police? A. Only during a traffic stop, where the cops can let you off with a warning if you cooperate and they're feeling generous. In every other circumstance, talking to the cops can ONLY hurt you. Don't talk to the police!!!

As with most things, a simple view of cause(camera)-effect(fracturing of art/loss of trad value) is great for seeing the big picture, but it of course lacks nuance. So, I wanted to say here: the reason that art has changed throughout history cannot be snapped into a single narrative in 5 min, it's contains many different factors, *one of the larger ones* being photography. And photography's effect on art also cannot be summed as "good" or "bad", it just changed things, some things positively, some negatively. For example...Photography has actually helped many artists do their realism work more accurately. There are thousands of moments, which you, a modern human, can now freeze with a camera, such as a crashing wave, or a sprinting horse and use for art. Without photos, it's really tough to recreate moments like that in your mind, but now artists can just look at a photo to find beauty in frozen moments that only last for fractions of time. No matter how you look at it though, the art world was forever changed by the camera and all the implications that cheap photos would produce. Why anyone would laugh *that* hard at that show is beyond me, nevertheless, I kindof insinuated that, that show would be nothing without the laugh track.. but it turns out the show would be *different* without the laughter because of the fact that they wouldn't have to do those awkward pauses.
