Philippine Merchant Marine Academy Since the Orientation Period is almost over and the Oathtaking will be held in a few days, I have decided to give you guys a sneak peek of the first few days of the Probies' training. For those who think this style is too much for the merchant marine, you are right. But this is a government school and by law it requires the cadets to be commissioned as officers in the Naval Reserves, hence the training. Some of the graduates also join as regulars in the Coast Guard and Navy. In the merchant marine, the PMMA's consistent track record for producing world-class officers are unmatched in the country. This is the first installment of my latest project, a series of videos about the routine of the cadets from the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA), the premiere maritime institution of the country. This series will be a big help to those who are aspiring to enter the Academy so that they could have an idea of what to expect in case they qualify. Chief MAKOi Seaman VLOG On a side note, military training is part of the training program of PMMA because the cadets are required to be commissioned as officers in the Philippine Navy Reserve. This was patterned after the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kingspoint. And even before that, military training was introduced to the school way back when it was handled by graduates of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis.

The Water Search and Rescue Training was conducted at the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy for the PMMA-PCG Cadets. This course teaches the basics of life-saving at sea and prepares the cadets for their upcoming Coast Guard Officer Course which they will need to complete after graduation.

It was a busy port stay due to a scheduled Internal Audit. But we did get to go on shore leave, however, since it is a city, there weren't many nice places to go except just to eat and shop a little bit. I did get a massage thanks to a businessman who sells massage accessories.

It's about 2 hours drive including traffic and doesn't cost much. So of course we went there to see the famed Sultanahmett or the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia. Here's a timelapse of our voyage from Paldiski, Estonia to Martas, Turkey. It took us a little over two weeks to complete the voyage. I'm still practicing taking timelapse and nightlapse on the GoPro. It doesn't really do well in low light. Chief MAKOi Seaman VLOG 032 All Work and No Play : No Shore Leave at Paldiski Our vessel arrived at our second loading port: Paldiski, Estonia. We only had three days of port stay. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go ashore due to a lot of maintenance jobs. Plus there's nowhere nearby to go. The only place worth visiting was Talinn City but to get there, I would have had to walk about 2 km to the train station and ride the train for 1.5 hours. Chief MAKOi Seaman VLOG 013 Arrival at Columbia River Anchorage After crossing the Pacific, we finally reached the entrance to the Columbia River, which will be our route going to Portland, Oregon. We were scheduled to go in on the next day so we had to stay at the anchorage area overnight. The harbor pilot came onboard our vessel via a helicopter which landed on our helipad. I managed to record it just in time. I almost didn't catch it but luckily I did.

Chief MAKOi Seaman VLOG 014 Arrived at Portland, Oregon Our two-week voyage from South Korea to Portland, Oregon came to a close and our vessel was safely berthed. We spent the whole day transiting the Columbia River. I recorded a few awesome sights along the way.

At the end of the route, we passed through the Unimak Passage. It is a corridor surrounded by a few islands which look a bit like frozen wastelands but beautiful in their isolation.

Renamed during the American occupation as the Nautical School of the Philippine Islands in 1899 and again as the Philippine Nautical School in 1900. It was closed in 1907 due to lack of budgetary support from the Insular Government but was re-opened in 1913 as the Nautical Department of the Philippine School of Arts and Trades. In 1918, it was re-established as the Philippine Nautical School and transferred to its own campus at Roberts Street in Pasay. In 1963, it was converted into the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy by virtue of RA 3680. The Academy was transferred to Fort Bonifacio in 1968.
