When a ship sinks, the first priority of any rescuer is to actually locate the vessel in distress. It may seem easy, but in comparison to the size of an ocean, its not! That's where an EPIRB comes in. An EPIRB is an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, and it is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment that is carried. It transmits the location of the distress to satellites orbiting the earth, allowing rescuers to find you. Strange as it sounds, ships can be described as either Right or Left Handed. It has nothing to do with which hand they naturally write with, but it actually tells us which way their propeller spins and the effect that it has on ship handling. You may have heard the terms propeller walk, or transverse thrust before. These both describe the effect itself. Right handed and left handed is just the terms we use to know what was a ship's propeller spins and consequently what she will do when you run astern. Controllable, or Variable Pitch Propellers are just one type of propulsion used on ships. Controllable pitch propellers vary the angle of each blade to control the amount on thrust produced by the propeller. They contrast fixed pitch propellers which vary their speed, keeping the angle of the blade fixed. This video explores the controllable pitch propeller and shows you how they vary their pitch to provide thrust to the vessel they are powering. Do you look at enormous ships out at sea and wonder how it is possible that they can float? This video explains how big ships float, giving an introduction to both buoyancy and flotation. The basic concept is quite simple. Ships need to displace enough water to counter their own weight. If they weigh more than they displace, they will sink. If they displace the same as they weigh, they will float. Why did Costa Concordia capsize? I use the official accident investigation report to explain the capsize - from a stability perspective. Costa Concordia was navigating near the island of Giglio when she made contact with a rock. How did that contact result in the vessel capsizing and laying on her starboard side against the island? With thanks to OpenSeaMap (map.openseamap.org) for the chart that I used in the video. -------EQUIPMENT I USE TO MAKE VIDEOS------ Microphone: Samson Go Mic (GB) https://amzn.to/2rXaDHM (US) https://amzn.to/2k7HLsT Mic Stand: Desktop Stand (GB) https://amzn.to/2rXVzto (US) https://amzn.to/2Leed9r Computer: Dell Inspiron 7000 Gaming (GB) https://amzn.to/2k8TVBL (US) https://amzn.to/2GAUugM -------------------------DISCLOSURE-------------------------- This description contains affiliate links.
