Parasocial Relationships

I'd like to specify here that this video isn't a callout to anyone in particular. This video is largely about fears and feelings that have manifested in my own head, rather than specific experiences. I'd also like to apologize for the one month gap between this upload, and my previous video. Life got very complicated for a few weeks. Things have stabilized now, and I can get back to work on larger scale projects again. What was Hotline Miami all about anyways?

Pick up Hotline Miami on GOG: https://bit.ly/LeadheadMiamike Hotline Miami was a difficult game to write about. It feels like everything that can be said about it doesn't even need to be said. It seems like the game does a great job of speaking for itself, but there's some more subtle details, that paint a pretty clear picture of how exactly our protagonist got to be this way, and what it's like for him. The gameplay isn't particularly fun, if I'm being honest, but everything about the experience is so unified, and considered, all with the aim of bringing you a truly disgusting, gritty experience, and it does that so, so well. It's an experience that I can't haven't in any other game, and that alone demands that I recommend this game. The music in this video is from the Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days OST by Mona Mur

There are so many questions to answer, and I just about never hear anyone talking about them. Factor in how much the waters have been muddied by Black Mesa, the fan made remake, and the questionably-canon Gearbox expansions, Decay, Blue Shift, and Opposing Force, and you've got a game who's story is pretty difficult to talk about, but today we're going to try to put all of the pieces together. The Half-Life: Alyx Mapping Contest, and What it Can Teach Us

The Half-Life: Alyx Mapping Contest, and What it Can Teach Us

Between this contest, and with the release of the Half-Life: Alyx level editor, we've gotten loads of content for this incredibly polished game, and more coming out every day. Let's look at these contest entries and see if there isn't a bit more to learn about VR game design moving forward. I recommend joining the Alyx Modding Hub Discord to get more in touch with the community, and their content: https://discord.gg/jgWysFa To play these maps, you can subscribe to these two packages on the workshop: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2105627441 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2105647614 (Some of these maps have been updated and posted independently on the workshop. Why Half-Life 1 Is So Unforgiving

Half-Life 1, while amazing, doesn't do a great job at teaching it's players what the optimal playstyle is. It's in an awkward position where it's age obscures it's intricacies and realism. Comedy in Gaming - The Ultimate Balancing Act

Comedy in gaming goes much deeper than good writing, or good slapstick. Between prompting the player to do funny things, and a fine balance between immersion, and the intentional undermining of immersion. It's a lot more complicated than the simple joy it generates. Artistic Game Design and Outer Wilds

Artistic Game Design and Outer Wilds

Outer Wilds has a relatively simple message, but that message is delivered with about as much consistency as I've seen from any other medium. The game mechanics, the level design, the music, the atmosphere, the visuals, everything about this game points to one key phrase. Because of this, it's a great introduction to the type of content I make. Enjoy! The Wendy's 4 For 4 Changed Everything

Wendy's has utterly changed the way we think about food in an artistic setting. We all know that. However, what I haven't seen anyone talking about in all the years of discussion on forums and collegiate councils is, what I see, as the under recognized third layer of meaning to the 4 for 4 combo. How it relates to, not only the Wendy's corporation, but ourselves as individuals. As persons. The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners is The Most Powerful VR Game Yet

Saints and Sinners isn't only the darkest, most story heavy, and mechanically intensive VR game to date, it's also, from what I've played, the game with the heaviest emphasis on themes. Nobody's Ever Going to Finish Undertale

Nobody's Ever Going to Finish Undertale

Undertale is a game constructed of layers upon layers of one-upping. What starts with a few simple fourth wall breaks cascades into the game, and it's creator, having a laugh at the entire player base, who so desperately want to pick it apart until it's nothing but code. Every bit of discourse about this game online was all part of Toby's master plan. We'll never truly finish this game, because we'll never outsmart it. We won't outsmart it by save scumming. We won't outsmart it by resetting our save. We won't outsmart it by editing our save. We won't outsmart it by datamining. We won't outsmart it figuring out who WD Gaster is, and we won't outsmart it by making video essays analyzing it's artistic intent. Toby is still one step ahead of all of us, so after twenty playthroughs, can we really say we've finished the game? How VR Can Change The Art World

How VR Can Change The Art World

As with flat screen games over the past 23 years, we're about to see an artistic revolution sparked by VR. I call games the greatest artistic medium because they have the tools of every other medium at their disposal, as well as their own: ludology. Well, the same can be said for VR gaming, except now the creators get to use our fatigue, our vertigo, our stamina, and every other thing our body does as a part of their canvas. They can paint sweatiness and exhaustion onto us, in the same way that Resident Evil famously paints panic and tension with it's mechanics. Once you set aside the development costs inherent to all games, this is the most liberating artistic medium ever conceived. Metal Gear Solid 4 Was the Best Thing That Could've Happened

Metal Gear Solid 4 Was the Best Thing That Could've Happened

Metal Gear Solid 4 was not a mistake. It was the best thing that possibly could've happened to series, short of it simply ending. As fans of Metal Gear Solid, wouldn't you rather it die a dignified death? Well, that's what MGS4 was trying to give it. Before Kojima inevitably left the series, and games like Metal Gear Survive started being made, Metal Gear Solid 4 was an attempt to close the book on this utterly epic series, and pull the plug before it became completely bastardized. While, ultimately, it failed in it's mission, that mission was to stop the series from becoming what it is now: A husk of what it once was, a Kojima-less era of Metal Gear. This game was an attempt to stop this deeply personal and important series from becoming less personal and less important, and I can't think of a more noble, and courageous goal than that. The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking - Damned If You Don't

This video, naturally, was copyright claimed by Columbia Records, so while they've chosen to run advertisements on this video, it wasn't my choice, nor do I get any of the revenue. The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking is an incredibly relatable album, using a parable of a man fantasizing about cheating on his wife to describe the yearning that we all inevitably feel once we settle into a stable lifestyle. Whether we abandon our free-spirited life for one of stability, or do the exact opposite, we'll always be left wondering what could've been. The music in this video, naturally, is entirely from "The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking" by Roger Waters, with guitar work from Eric Clapton, music conduction from Michael Kamen, voice acting by Jack Palance, saxaphone work by David Sanborn, and backup vocals from Madeline Bell, Katie Kissoon, and Doreen Chante. Blood • Hitscanning Done Right

In a lot of classic FPS games, it seems like the hitscanning enemies only serve to break up the flow state that you get into when fighting projectile enemies. In Blood however, the tricks you use to fight the hitscanners become the flow state, and that, combined with the atmosphere, makes Blood my favorite game prior to Thief 2. Why Your Kids Should be Playing Halo

As a young adult who has a lot of childhood memories tied to the Halo series, I can't help but be nostalgic for the games, even as I hardly think about them nowadays, but regardless of that, it's impossible for me to ignore how much of an impact they had on my young, malleable mind growing up. I didn't see the games as a route to some cathartic violence, for me, they were a route to the majesty of our universe, and the incredible world that exists in all of our minds. They played a huge part in my development as a social presence, and as an isolated thinker, and while I'm sure I'd be much as I am today without the series, they completely colored so much of my early "philosophy", and were responsible for my transformation from a child, to a true person. While you obviously shouldn't let the games do the parenting, you shouldn't disregard the series as mindless violence, rotting your kids brain away either. The series truly is life changing in all of the right ways to a young, malleable mind. The Stanley Parable • Frustrating Players

The Stanley Parable seems like an almost cautionary tale about the dangers of autorism. You have to find the perfect balance between what the audience wants, and getting your message across. In games in particular, what the audience wants is usually freedom, which tends to only undermine the story you want to tell. The Last Guardian • A Friend in Need

Feels good to finally upload again. I'm still slowing production for my vertigo, but the next video won't be nearly this ambitious, and will therefore get out much faster. Thanks for bearing with me. Fumito Ueda's The Last Guardian pulled the *very* hard trick of getting me to cry purely at the literal events of a work of fiction, whereas it's usually the subtext that gets to me. By the end of the game, Trico felt almost as real to me as any other animal I've dealt with in my life, and the game did an incredibly job at taking advantage of that bond to deliver some incredibly powerful moments. This video also serves as a bit of a break from my usual pretentiousness, as this is mostly a surface level analysis. I don't even mention postmodernism or metanarratives once! Finite Fun, Hallucinating, and Vertigo

I know this video is incredibly low quality. it took me like an hour tops to put together, but this vertigo situation really has been that bad lately. I'm not fit to do the hokey pokey right now, much less sitting in front of a computer doing my typically meticulous editing. Here, I more or less explain the situation, with a bit of an anecdote about diminishing returns from art analysis that comes with a battle between my OCD and my ADHD, so at least there's some substance from my channel this week. And yes, I do understand the hypocrisy of saying that I don't use most graphics mods while showing footage of a remaster that the original director had nothing to do with. I've played through Shadow of the Colossus so many times that I don't really overthink it like that anymore. Anyways, even with all of this, I am genuinely excited about this next video on The Last Guardian. I think it's a pretty unique essay for an incredibly unique game. (don't watch Evil Dead 2 if you feel like I feel)

The Subtextual StereoFidelics Story

DRB_nOzOens | 16 Sep 2019

The Subtextual StereoFidelics Story

The StereoFidelics easily have the cruelest talent to recognition ratio I've ever seen. Not only is every single song they've ever produced a pure banger, but they tell a linear story about a couple that runs away from civilization together, only to find out that their goals don't line up as much as it first seemed. I'd like to apologize for the varying quality of footage used in this video. These guys were huge in 2010, so a lot of the footage was recorded with outdated cameras by drunk people trying to contain their dancing. That being said, the footage is sourced from the following: CloseShaveMusic (Youtube) The Lab in Asheville, NC (Bar) Erik Olsen (Youtube) Chris Padgett (Youtube - the bands guitarist, bassist, and synth player) The Acoustic Coffeehouse (Cafe) Here's the present to you all. The StereoFidelics' opening album, "Only Sleeping", which is *very* close to being completely lost to time. Memoirs of a Spy Main

Spy has made me laugh more loudly more times than any other mechanic in any other game. As a master of stealth whose a bit of a bitch when he's face to face with the enemy, it's impossible to not grin as you sit there blatantly fooling 6 people who could all kill you in a second. This was definitely a more simple video, and not my traditional style, but hey, I had a lot of fun making it. This is the stuff I would regret not experimenting with earlier if I ever get to a larger sub count. I admit I'm not the best at comedy editing, and using TF2's amazing voice lines is practically cheating in that field, but this video brought me a lot of laughs as I was making it. Dishonored 2 • Missing the Magic

I'm sorry this video is so late. It's been done since Saturday, but mountain internet messed up my upload 4 times now, and these things take all day to upload as is. Dishonored is, as I've said before, easily one of my favorite games of all time. It fills me with a sense of pure wonder that is hard to even put to words, even after 20 playthroughs. I love Dishonored 2, but I just can't say the same about it. I really hate to make a negative video, even if this does turn into a recommendation by the end. However, I think that making a more negative video was the release I needed after making my Planescape: Torment video. I haven't really loved a single idea I've had since then, even the videos I actually made. Ever since this video was nearing completion, I've had a bunch of ideas I'm excited about. Long story short, I'm sorry that the mood has been so dour around here lately. Next week's video will be light hearted, about something I completely love, and hopefully hilarious too. I think I'm heading out of a short burnout phase I was having. Final note: I'm sorry if you really love this game, and I spoil a bit of the magic for you. As petty as this is, I intentionally avoid negative reviews of games I love, and I really do hate to out out negativity, but the mystery of why this game didn't work for me has been haunting me ever since it came out, and I think it's a very interesting one to solve. Children of Men | An Audible Apocalypse

Spoilers! Ads are running on this video, but that wasn't my choice, an Universal studios will be getting all the proceeds. Sorry! Alfonso Caurón's "Children of Men" has a density to it that I've never seen matched. Every single frame has some sort of subtext or subtle world building that goes miles to immerse you in the world. Factor that in with the long takes, and you have a film that will practically leave you shell shocked. However, what I'm more interested in with this video is the sound design. Sure, like most great films, you can watch Children of Men without audio and still get the basic premise and themes, but the same can be said for it's bare audio track, with no accompanying images. There are a boatload of subtle tricks that this films audio uses to immerse you in the world, and I'll be focusing on some of them today. Breaking the Bank | Recommending Thief 2

This is a far cry from my normal content, but after spending a month working on a single video, I really needed a break, so I took the opportunity to play some Thief 2. In my last two videos on this game, I realized that for as much as I could talk about it, I was having a hard time actually putting what made it so great to words. Since the game is themed around subtlety, I think it's the sort of thing you have to see with your own eyes to understand. So, here's commentary over one of the cooler levels in the game: The First City Bank & Trust" Gameplay commentaries aren't a new trend for me, there will be another essay up next week, probably either on the film 'Children of Men', or the game 'Journey'. Thanks again for bearing with me while I produced that Planescape: Torment video. It really was one of those "I have to make this video before I die" situations. My brow is lead

Planescape: Torment | The Nature of Man

You'll probably get something out of this video even if you haven't played the game, though I'd highly recommend it. It totally holds up. Chris Avellone's Planescape: Torment is a deeply troubling, dialogue driven CRPG about the nature of regret and personal growth. It's influenced the way I look at my past more than any other single thing has, and is a major part of the way I think about the mistakes of myself and my peers. It has a hell of a lot to teach anybody whose willing to learn it's lessons, and I think that just about anybody with a few years behind them will be able to relate to the story of The Nameless One, and use it to reexamine their own past. I spent roughly a month away from the channel to replay the game, and produce this video because this game is so incredibly important to me. I know it's a niche game that most of you probably haven't even heard of, and that this video naturally won't be too popular, but thanks for baring with me, as again, I wouldn't be able to sleep right if I never did this video. With this, I've now covered all of my top ten games of all time. One month in the making, and I notice one mistake just a couple hours before this video is meant to go live. Chapter 4 is labeled "Chapter 3". Too late to fix it now. Longing | Recommending Planescape: Torment

While I intended to hold off on making any videos until I finished Planescape: Torment, I realized I actually get pretty down when I'm not making content, so here's a quick little spoiler-light video focusing on one scene in the game in order to recommend it. The game is full to the brim with writing with this much subtext and intrigue, and will without a doubt shake up your own perception of yourself, almost definitely for the better. There are almost no other works of art in any medium that have affected me as much as Planescape: Torment has, and while you'll probably look at this game and think it's old and impenetrable, it absolutely isn't. With very light walkthrough usage you can absolutely breeze through this game, and be making dozens of interesting decisions every hour throughout. The music in this video is from the Planescape: Torment and Torment: Tides of Numenera soundtracks by Mark Morgan. I highly recommend the track "The Smoldering Corpse Bar (Alternate)"

Industrial Issues: Dying Games

Most games coming out of the triple A, big budget gaming scene are on death row, just waiting to be erased from playability a few years down the road. This is a serious problem. Not even piracy can save most of these games from eventual erasure. As a firm believer in archival, this is a nightmare to me, and as fans of gaming, it should be a nightmare to you all too. Prey | Fictional Empathy

To celebrate the one year anniversary of the channel, July 1st, I remade my first video, 'Discussing Prey's Metanarrative'. I had zero experience editing, recording audio, or writing these sorts of essays, so needless to say I've improved a lot! See the original here: https://youtu.be/seIBqUpECSM Prey's ending reveals a subtextual story that lines up perfectly with the real world motivation behind many aspects of the games design. This is a classic example of a metanarrative, and it elevates one of the best games I've ever played just a little bit higher, giving it the artsy edge that so many great games still fail to pull off so subtly. The music in this video is from the Prey 2017 OST by Mick Gordon and Ben Crossbones Happy anniversary!

Not only that; since I made it public in the 200 subscriber video, the Discord server has been doing fantastically. Whenever my channel hits an anniversary, I'm going to be remaking one of my older videos from the ground up, starting with my very first video: Discussing Prey's Metanarrative. I'm pretty excited to get a clear comparison of how much I've grown since the start of the channel, as I had zero editing experience, zero essay writing experience, and zero voice work experience. Should be lots of fun! Thank you all! I seriously love you guys.

2001: A Space Odyssey | Human Error

As massively clever as it is even after one viewing, 2001: A Space Odyssey is full of hidden details and explanations that elevate it to one of, if not the most well thought out film of all time. Every single thing that Hal does has a logical explanation, and amounts to more than him just malfunctioning. From the very first moment we see the Jupiter Missions vessel, Hal is planning out how he's going to kill the crew if he decides he needs too, and moments later, he decides. The following points were from other peoples analyses, but we're too compelling for me to not subscribe to: Hal's "mistake" when notating his winning chess move The monolith representing a film screen Dave breaking the water glass representing the barrier between film and audience being shattered As I expected, this video was blocked before it even went live. Guess I should've addressed my opening word to Warner Bros. as well as MGM. If this video went live, it means they chickened out, and were just trying to mess with me in exchange for raving about their movie. Feel free to email them explaining fair use. Copyright claims

Naturally whenever I do a film analysis, I get a copyright claim. Some of the more evil companies like to take my video down as soon as it goes up, only to let it go live a week later because nobody followed up. That's right. They have bots just to mess with me. If I attempt to file a dispute, I get a big warning saying YouTube can shut down my account if the dispute fails. I'm not a lawyer, I'm just a fan of some of Warner Bros. movies and wanted to share that **EDIT** I decided to pick up the gun, and file a dispute. So now Warner as 30 days to respond. What will almost definitely happen is that the 30 days will pass without my video so much as being acknowledged by any humans at Warner. In which case, it'll be back up in a month. No way of telling if it would've been better to just ignore it. Guess we'll see. **EDIT 2** I actually managed to get the video back up within like 6 hours of filing the dispute. Believe me I'm ecstatic about that, but it doesn't mean that this isn't a huge problem with the way YouTube is run. I'm a totally unpaid, casual YouTuber, but there are plenty of people whose next meal depends on YouTube not screwing them over like that.

This is definitely one of my more overly analytical videos, but hey, over analysing is fun, and it gives me an excuse to show more badass Doom footage. Doom 2016 seems to comment on how much slower and more methodical shooters have become in the last two decades. Metal Gear Solid 3 | The End of War

Snake's battle with The End represents a long, drawn out conflict between an old, noble and passionate generation of soldier, and a dispassionate, uncaring generation of soldier that's quickly losing itself to it's mission, with the latter ultimately winning. Matt Bortolino's Half-Life 2 mod Research and Development does what fan campaigns are best at: reminding us of what our favorite games did best, and keeping those concepts alive long after the games release. System Shock 2 Ending - Fan Edit

Part of today's video on System Shock 2's storytelling. All I really did here was add some of SHODAN's ending cutscene dialogue to the fight, so that we don't have to see our character kill SHODAN in gameplay and in cutscene. Then I cut out SHODAN messing with Tommy as Rebecca, as it seemed out of character for her. I replaced that with footage of a shuttle leaving the station from the military tour section in the beginning, only played in reverse, and I added in SHODAN taking over the Von Braun by showing a XERXES monitor change to her face. It's a little rough around the edges, but in my opinion this is much more representative of the System Shock 2 experience than the official cutscene, while getting across of all the same information.

System Shock 2 | Constant Regret

*This video is SPOILER FREE* Part one of a three part look at System Shock 2, which will hopefully explain why it's in my top ten games of all time. This first section focuses on how it uses a vast array of understandable but complicated character build options to make you paranoid every time you have to invest skill points into your character. By having different sections of the game favor different builds, you will, at one point or another, regret every character upgrade you purchase, leading to a constant sense of dread whenever you have to level up your characters skills. The game does everything it can to tempt you into straying away from the original vision for your character build, and by the end, you're filled with regret, and lacking trust in even yourself. There will be spoilers in the next two parts of this series, so I suggest playing System Shock 2 ASAP! You won't regret it. Memes | A Safe Alternative to Sex

There's a sort of law of life that almost all life follows. We're designed to want to spread ourselves out and make our mark on the world. Everything from a dog peeing on a lamp post to somebody playing guitar on the sidewalk, to somebody blasting music out of their car at a gas station is an example of this. It's why the drunk are so prone to interrupting people, and why people like me do videos like this, and why people use apolitical bumper stickers. This behavior of course extends to sex. Offspring used to be the ultimate extension of one's self, but humans have evolved a better way of putting themselves into other people, and diversifying their presence in the world: memes. Portal, like Half-Life, is incredible at creating a hugely dense world through giving small hints that ask and answer much bigger questions. We can guess and theorize so much about the world in these games, that they last much, much longer than their run time. Bioshock Infinite | The Free Will Paradox

I recommend watching my previous video 'Bioshock: A Sea of Hypocrisy' before watching this, however I do recap the relevant points in the beginning of this one it's worth pointing out that I haven't yet played Burial at Sea, which was also directed by Ken Levine, and as a helpful Redditer pointed out, it falsifies a couple of the literal events I mention. Although subtextually, I doubt it will change my reading of Infinite much. Bioshock Infinite seems like a swan song for the entire Shock lineage. With it's ending, it seems to me that Infinite is acknowledging the formulaic plotting that was starting to become apparent around the time Bioshock came out. While every single game in the Shock or 0451 lineage is incredibly unique, interesting, and thought provoking, the broadest strokes of their plots are full of parallels, leading to a twinge of predictability even as the lore of the games takes dozens of unexpected twists and turns. By letting us peer across the multiverse and see how similar all of the different realities are, with nothing distinguishing them but cosmetic changes to the world and story, Bioshock Infinite acknowledges the "System Shock formula" that's present in its entire bloodline. Call of Duty 2 | Boots on the Ground

While they're all at least fun, Call of Duty 2 is a genuinely smart game, and as far as I'm concerned it achieves every one of it's goals by being one of the few games of it's time to generate respect for it's subject matter, rather than desensitizing me to it. While the whole game is great, The Battle of Hill 400 in particular does a fantastic job at rising tensions as your squad mates die around you and your enemy circles in closer and closer, until just when you think you don't have another inch to surrender, your air support comes in. It's a genuinely powerful battle. It starts out grim and hopeless, and it turns into incredibly hectic battle for minutes at a time, giving you just enough time to stock up and realize how few of your teammates are left between waves. Bioshock | A Sea of Hypocrisy

I think that the sheer density of Bioshock 1 urges a lot of players to just accept that there's a lot going on, while mostly only taking in the surface details. That's how I viewed the game until a couple of months ago, when I had the idea for this video, and decided to look a bit closer at this massively clever game. Essentially, every chapter in the game has a separate message, be it one based in Rapture's history, or a parabolic message looking at the story of a single character, such as Sander Cohen. The purpose of this video, then, is to take a look at each individual chapter, and see how to expand on the games meaning as a whole. And no, my name didn't come from the Leadhead Splicer, and I know that Bioshock takes place in an ocean. My Atheist Gods

This is the sort of unchecked, isolated logic that's completely fallible, but interesting nonetheless, at least to me. I know this isn't my typical sort of content, but I would like to do the occasional high school philosophy video from time to time, and this was a fun place to start, and it was a good excuse to go driving on some beautiful roads I don't visit much anymore. More sinisterly, this buys me some time to work on what will probably be my second longest video yet, and has taken about four weeks already. Dishonored | Versus the World

One of the most unique aspects of Dishonored is that it's a total stealth game, but one in which, even on the highest difficulties, you can still hold your own in a fight, and even play through the whole thing as if it was an action game, and whats more? It might just be the most fun way to play the game. The LeadChat discord is now open to all! https://discord.gg/V7sfnVj Thank you all so much! You guys have given me such a fantastic opportunity to express myself and share my thoughts with an audience that cares and listens. Every single one of you helps me press forward with the channel more than you could possibly know. I've grown so much more confident, and present as a result of your support, and every time I feel like a video or an essay isn't going anywhere, I remember that I have all of you guys backing me up, and I press on. I was going to just use the Donut County soundtrack for this video, but I was in such a good mood that I decided to play some guitar. And yes, it's just a coincidence that I say "stupid", right when I pluck the wrong string in the last song. The music covered is by Led Zeppelin Pink Floyd The Doors Rodrigo y Gabriela (Who fit Quake 3 gameplay incredibly well) The games played are: Far Cry 2 with the excellent Far Cry 2: Redux mod (I don't usually like realism mods, but Far Cry 2 comes miles closer to it's full potential with this mod), Quake 3 Arena on Nightmare (The bots can't get to the mega health, so I have a bit of an advantage)

Half-Life 2: A Larger Puzzle

Half-Life 2 does an especially good job at subtle world building and visual storytelling, to the point where I missed 90% of the most interesting parts of the game my first couple times playing it as a kid. This does amazing things like making the world feel so much bigger than what we get to see, and gives the game a longevity that hardly any other games can compete with. You Never Give Me Your Money: The Power of One Sentence

Making this video was sort of like my vacation from the channel, to celebrate how well we've been doing so far this year. As important as the subject matter is to me, this video was one of the easiest to produce that I've made yet, it was almost just an excuse to do some night driving, talk about something so personal that it almost won't be relatable, and play some guitar. I'll be back to my usually content by the time the next video goes up. You can join the discussion and play some games with us on the official Discord server! https://discord.gg/V7sfnVj You can listen to the original song that this video is about here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpndGZ71yww You Never Give Me Your Money is the only song to ever make me cry, and that's largely because of how much significance it holds to me in how I live my life. I'm not a sociable person, I'm completely awful at small talk, but the lesson that I took from this song has turned me from a total cynic, into a complete optimist, to the point where I now look forward to the tiny interactions I have with gas station clerks and other strangers. I don't believe in Karma, but I absolutely believe that you can cultivate happiness in yourself, and those around you, by making the first step and being a friendly person. I do my best to live my life by that policy, and never be rude or negative, regardless of the context, and I feel like it's made me so much happier a person than if I was still being rude to people because I thought it would be funny, such as in a multiplayer game when somebody is doing terribly. In my experience, I would get a copyright flag if I played even a short section of a Beatles song in my videos, so thanks to YouTuber caveonalmiron for uploading a demo version of the outro to this song that I could mix with my guitar playing to hopefully dodge a copyright robot's attention. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4p6rI-LfL4 I also mentioned the Beatles cover band "Abbey Road" in this video. I absolutely recommend checking out their website and seeing if they'll be in your area. Hearing them live is the only time I've ever cried because of music. http://abbeyroadtributeband.com/ I know, I'm not too good at guitar, doesn't mean I don't love it.

Snake Eater: I Am a Gun

Whenever I talk about Metal Gear Solid games, I always have a voice in the back of my head telling me that I'm reading too much into things. However, with Metal Gear Solid 2 being so open about it's desire to be read into, it was hard for me to believe that there wasn't more to MGS3 than met the eye, and I think writing this video made me realize that it is indeed much smarter than I gave it credit for. I always knew it was smart, but until now, I never considered it to be anywhere near MGS2 in terms of the subtextual aspcet that makes Kojima my favorite games director. Also, for a lot of this video, when I talk about "Snake", I'm referring to Snake as a concept, which means Solid Snake, Naked Snake, Venom Snake, and Raiden. I mention this during the video, but I just wanted to clarify that I know that they're different characters, as I say that Snake has been going on similar missions for four games now. Insert Coin: The Issue With Art Games

I'm going to be classifying some games as art, and others as toys in this video. Please understand that I don't like to draw a clear line in the sand between what is and isn't art. As far as I'm concerned, films like Paul Blart, Pixels, Unfriended, and games like Call of Duty, Street Fighter, Galaga, and yes, even G.I. Joe dolls, are all art. However, with games in particular, there's a very real spectrum, with things like Pac-Man falling closer to the toy side of the spectrum, games like Resident Evil falling somewhere in the middle, and games like Metal Gear Solid, or What Remains of Edith Finch falling on the artistic side of the spectrum. It takes a great deal of creativity to make something like Space Invaders, and even if certain arcade games were clearly following trends to get money out of kids, they are still very much art. However, they might be closer to the toy side of the gaming spectrum. I love classic arcade fun as much as anybody else. I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream: The id of AM

I'll be mumbling a bit in this video, I'd look crazy if I sounded too happy to talk about this game. Video games can have an incredibly tricky time dealing with serious subject matter, simply because they typically require more imagination to fill in the gaps in the visuals, or to suspend your disbelief. Somehow, I Have no Mouth managed to handle some of the most serious topics ever brought up in a game, in a way that doesn't undermine them whatsoever. It isn't afraid to use imagery and language that most game publishers would instantly cut from a game. You can tell that they really didn't make many compromises in their vision of creating an utterly bleak game. The type that can put you in a somber mood for days as you play it. However, it's perhaps even more interesting how they managed to work so much meaning into what at first appears to be seemingly random nightmare scenarios. Every character has a unique, and personalized torment, and the stories that feature them are full of symbolism and deeper meaning. However, the second function of all of that symbolism is to make you feel like the character you're playing as, in a totally abstract way. Tacoma: A Greedy Utopia

Tacoma: A Greedy Utopia

While it's not exactly the game's main theme, Tacoma is a great vector to talk about an interesting issue we're going to be crossing yet again in my generation's lifetime: the automation of labor. More and more, jobs are being made redundant by advances in technology, from the cotton gin, to the car, and to the newest "threat" artificial intelligence. As I'm sure you all know, technology tends to advance exponentially, and the advent and normalization of industrial AI will bring about a fundamental change in the nature of economy. By the time we have AI that can evolve, creating progenitors which can surpass the original, it won't be much longer until we have interplanetary mining operations controlled entirely by AI, and at this point, the world is at our fingertips. There will be a "gold rush" that completely overshadows all the mining that's ever been done on Earth, and with that influx of materials will come the decimation of economy. In the world of Tacoma, this change in economic structure takes the form of loyalty points. You might go to a Google University, and continue to earn loyalty points so long as you work at businesses owned by google, and the entire economy is based around these loyalty points. This is just about the worst case scenario save for complete anarchy, as switching from one company to another would be financial suicide. However, the orbital mining boom could also bring about the complete removal of economy all together, and that's the secret to bringing humanity into a Utopian state as seen on Star Trek, where all humans exist to do what they please. Some will be artists, some will be scientist, and some will sit around doing nothing. The curiosity that drives humans to invent will still be hard wired into us, but there won't be a fear of going hungry, or not being able to receive medical attention, or not get a proper education. With AI operated orbital mining, the bright future of Star Trek would be in our reach. However, we just need to get past the hurdle of corporations using that technology for their own good, rather than the good of the human race. Sorry to make such an overlong description, it's a topic i'm very interested in. I want a holodeck. New Vegas: Dig Two Graves

*Disclaimer* Unless you really know your New Vegas lore, you're not going to get a lot out of this video. Spoilers for everything New Vegas ahead. Also, this video is 100% pulled from my memory, so let me know if I got anything wrong. I'm getting close to wrapping up my most recent New Vegas playthrough, and a lot of things hit me this time around. Almost every quest in the game revolves around somebody being stuck in the past, and losing themselves because of it. Boone, Cass, Arcade, Lily, Raul, both Ed-E's, Christine, Mortimer, Elijah, House, Caesar, The minds of Big MT, Ulysses, the Boomers, the Khans, and many, many others all fit this trend. Not to mention the Courier themself, walking like a man possessed all the way to Vegas to get revenge on Benny. I think that if New Vegas has one central message, it's that you can't keep you're head stuck in the past. You have to let go, and begin again, or else you'll get the old world blues. For some reason or another, it was most natural to talk about the Courier from the perspective of a wastelander telling their story years later. Something different for me, but I think it made for a pretty fun video. Also, while I tried to only say things that were applicable to every playthrough, I made a couple of decisions set in stone to help with the flow. I also had to fill in a couple of gaps in the lore, such as Follows Chalk changing his name to Joshua, and becoming a drunk in Westside after the Courier convinces him to move to the civilized lands. If anyone's curious, I really do decorate my player home with all the trophies from my adventures. What you see in the lucky 38 master suite is exactly how it looks in my current playthrough. Spec Ops - The Line: Sorrow or Satire?

While it doesn't seem like it at first glance, Spec Ops' mechanics seemed to be meticulously thought out to do one thing: mock modern shooters. Think about how much more relatable and emotional it's story would be if it had shooting mechanics like that of the Far Cry series, rather than the rediculous over the top action it has now. Walker's descent into madness would only be more impactful, which leads me to believe that it's intention wasn't tragedy, but satire. With this in mind, suddenly a slightly tone deaf game with a tragic story quickly becomes a hilarious satire, right down to it's mechanics. Left 4 Dead: Making Friends

Left 4 Dead has incredibly tight mechanics that are all centered around making strangers work together. As a result, you can build a friends list in Left 4 Dead faster than any other game that I'm aware of. Upon getting the steam URL for this game, I checked the reviews and this was the top review: 4,495.2 hrs on record "My favorite game, in large part because of everyone I got to play with... all of you. Thank you for making this game well worth playing. I know you are all wonderful people. Be kind to one another." That just goes to show how beautifully this game is designed to encourage people to be friendly. Valve is truly fantastic at game design, and their multiplayer games are the easiest way of showcasing that. They take a look beyond balancing and fairness, and try to decide what makes a genre fun, then centering everything around that idea. Fargo: The Koi Dragon

As predicted, Fox copyright claimed the visual content in this video, and Sony copyright claimed the song "For Nikki". Fortunately, neither of them have chosen to run ads. The first season of Fargo is by a large margin my favorite thing to be made for television, and a good candidate for my favorite thing to ever be put to video. While i'm usually not a fan of symbolism that requires foreknowledge that's external to the work, Fargo does it with so much confidence, style, and grace that it's impossible not to want to learn about it's symbols, and it does it all with fantastic characters and story to boot. Yet another game that sets it's artistic sights on goals that only gaming can hit, Emily is Away instantly took me back to the middle school and high school years of vigorously following dozens of unspoken rules regarding how to format texts. It's an incredibly scary time for everybody that age, and when conversations inevitably started to get dull, it was way too scary to try and point out that something was wrong with the friendship, so all we could really do was just hope that we moved past it. That's not how it happens though, friendships fizzle out, and rather than ending in a fight, modern friendships end in a "seeya" and and "Emily is away". Soma: A Life Worth Living?

I couldn't fix that audio skip in the beginning. Sorry. Soma creates a unique kind of horror by forcing us to answer questions that we couldn't possibly *know* the answers to. Then making us live with our answers, and constantly having us questioning our philosophy that led us to them. If horror is the fear of the unknown, then Soma is the fear of what can't be known. Team Fortress 2: Taking it Easy

These past few years I've gotten away from playing many multiplayer games, with one exception. Team Fortress 2 is one of the most well designed games I've ever played, as evidenced by the fact that it still has a relatively strong player base after 11 years and countless changes. The whole reason, for me at least, is the fact that it's a casual game at heart. There's always room to mess around and do rediculous strategies that tend to work out surprisingly well. You can do well in Team Fortress 2 without just doing the same couple of strategies over and over, like in other multiplayer games. Above all else, though, you can relax while you play it. You're not gritting your teeth on the edge of your seat like in CSGO or other competitive games. The Beginner's Guide: What Right do I Have? (OUTDATED)

The Beginner's Guide is now the second game I've ever cried at. I never thought I'd be having ethical dillemas with my YouTube channel until I played this game. This can be seen as an unplanned follow-up video to my Metal Gear Solid 2 essay. If MGS2 was the reason I started this channel, than The Beginner's Guide is the reason I might one day quit. Like Metal Gear Solid 2, it seems like it was written specifically about people like me, and YouTube channels like mine. It seems to almost be the antithesis of MGS2, suggesting that viewers don't have the right to share their ideas about works of art, and that they taint them by doing so. Not only that, we also tend to create our own ideas about a creator based on how their work speaks to us, which in reality, has more to do with us than it does the creators. Separate the art from the artist. Fallout 76: What Could Have Been Great

Fallout 76: What Could Have Been Great

Fallout 76 had a ton of potential to be a totally unique game while still being Fallout to the core. Bethesda chose to take it in more of a shoot and loot, and that's fine. But I think that you could make a true multiplayer role playing game using, essentially, only the assets that we already have in Fallout 4. All it would really take is careful balancing, and a higher emphasis on base building and factions. With some of the ideas suggested in the video, Bethesda could've capitalized on the Ark Survival Evolved crowd, and changed that games mechanics to dial down the grinding, and dial up the interesting faction politics and battles in a universe we all know and love. I really try to stay away from negativity on my channel, and while I know this video is inherently negative towards Fallout 76, there's just so much potential in a multiplayer Fallout that I couldn't resist making this video. I don't *want* any game to fail, and I'm sad to see Fallout 76 disappointing so many people, but as someone who loves the Fallout 1, 2 and NV, it's hard to ignore that Bethesda's pushing the series to it's limits as far as mainstream appeal goes, and I'm worried they've broken it in the process. Metal Gear Solid 2: Subjective Truth

*Spoilers ahead* Metal Gear Solid 2 is, undoubtedly *the* most important work of art of all time to me in how it relates to my life. It tells me to have faith in my own ideas and perspective, and not to let someone else's ideas change mine. There will never be a 100% objectively 'right' analysis of MGS2, or any work of art for that matter. Art as a whole is about the inherent subjectivity of human thought, not about finding out exactly what everything is *supposed* to mean. Because of this, the only person who can disprove your subjective ideas about the world is yourself. I can't believe I finally managed to get this one out after countless iterations of the essay, and at least 30 hours of recording and editing. Thanks for sticking with me guys. Hopefully the video itself will serve as evidence, but I can't express in a mere description just how important this essay, and this game, was to me. If you want to buy the PC port of MGS2, I would recommend the PS3 port in the big boss collection or the MGS HD Collection. Both can be found on eBay.

The Simpsons: Fun for the Whole Family

The Simpsons is the perfect ice breaker because it appeals to so many different senses of humor, giving people who usually wouldn't like the same shows something to watch together. Whereas something like Rick and Morty or South Park is more aimed at a specific audience, The Simpsons is enjoyable to everyone thanks to it's skillful, all inclusive writing. I'm only referring to seasons 1-7 in this video. I've heard that the show starts going steeply downhill after that, so I haven't bothered to watch it. Seven seasons is plenty for me. Metal Gear Solid: What it Means to Play a Game

Metal Gear Solid focuses on the inherent disparity between player and player character that runs contrary to the supposedly escapist nature of games. Essentially, it's saying "you can't escape real life, you know this is fake, and so do we". However, it spends a considerable amount of time lulling the player in to thinking that it's a typical military action game before springing the outlandish story beats that Metal Gear's now known for. Deus Ex: Fight or Flight

Deus Ex has an amount of player agency that's only ever been matched by Prey (2016) in my book. For that reason, I decided to do two playthroughs consecutively, one almost entirely non-lethal, and another that was needlessly lethal any time that killing people would be even slightly convenient. What I realized is that whether you're going lethal or non-lethal, there's a huge variety of gameplay scenarios and tactics you'll need to use to progress smoothly. A lot of games can get pretty repetitive if you're going perfect stealth or entirely non-lethal, but Deus Ex has almost as many non-lethal options as it has lethal options, and you'll need to use all of them in both combat and stealth to progress. Disempowerment in Gaming

MTVuzASHyso | 14 Nov 2018

Disempowerment in Gaming

No matter what you're designing - be it an arcade game, a text adventure, an RPG, or an action game - a fine balance needs to be maintained between disempowerment and empowerment. In some games, this is done narratively by giving your mission a bit of moral ambiguity, and in others, it's done by having you die over and over before a few easier sections that keep you feeling like a badass, and theres a huge spectrum of ways disempowerment is used in gaming in between those two. Even the power trip that is Doom 2016 needs its share of disempowerment to keep players hooked. Inglourious Basterds: To Kill a Nazi

Inglourious Basterds: To Kill a Nazi

**THIS VIDEO SPOILS INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS** Through subversion of the tropes of World War II media, Quentin Tarantino manages to test the public perception of Nazis as ethically justifiable cannon fodder. Where many games, movies, and shows paint Nazi soldiers as one dimensional villains in both their dialogue and their deaths, Inglourious Basterds is happy to show the vulnerable, passionate, human side of Nazis, before brutally killing them as if they were the cannon fodder they're often portrayed as. Seemingly, Tarantino wanted to test our hatred of Nazis as a response to their portrayal on most media that features them. I don't mean to offend anyone with this video, and the things I say in it don't necessarily reflect my personal philosophy. Everything I mention here is simply my interpretation of what Inglourious Basterds is trying to say. It's okay to talk controversially about a controversial work. You can join the discussion and play some games with us on the official Discord server! https://discord.gg/V7sfnVj It's worth noting that my new GPU still hasn't come, but I was able to cobble together a video about a film without it. In order to avoid over saturating my channel with videos about films, I won't be making another video until I have my new card, and can resume making videos on games. I've been having a tough time with a seller on Mercari, so once my cancel request goes through, I'll be ordering it from Newegg and should be back in commission by the end of the week. The music in this essay is from the Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater OST and the Inglourious Basterds OST Since this video contains footage from Inglourious Basterds, it will almost definitely be copyright claimed by either Universal Pictures or The Weinstein Company. They have every right to choose to run advertisements on this video. I'd just like to note that I don't intend to run ads on any of my videos, and that I don't make any money from ads on copyright claimed content. And no, the title isn't a play on "To Kill a Mockingbird". That's just an unfortunate coincidence I didn't notice until after the video was live.

The Beauty of Dishonored

The Beauty of Dishonored

The first Dishonored is easily the most beautiful game I've ever played. It forgoes the slightly more realistic art style of Dishonored 2 in favor of a wholly imaginative oil paint art style. By utilizing cel-shading it's able to deliver more stylistic visuals that will age much better than games that try for nothing but realism, and will without a doubt always look fantastic no matter how much technology advances; just look at Team-Fortress 2 or Wind Waker. Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/LeadheadYT Discord: https://discord.gg/8KAACDb Second channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaT56xLbqk35gMS3KdDsWVg Playable Teaser for my game: drive.google.com/file/d/1cTdHEt9CcmhEGoxfawhycyMySE0VRZ8g A minor correction: out of the games mentioned, only Wind Waker and Breath of the Wild use cel-shading. The other games just use a style that's visually similar, but with more realistic lighting. Dishonored included! It's worth pointing out that I was using cheats in order to more quickly get the footage I wanted. I have 177 hours on Steam, and have played through this game every way imaginable countless times, so you know. Dishonored sure is interesting with infinite blink distance. I'd totally recommend people who have played through dozens of times like myself do a cheat engine playthrough, I recommend the Wemod trainer. PSA: Dishonored is completely playable, comprehensible, and navigable without HUD. Even if you're doing a full frontal assault playthrough that forgoes any notion of stealth, I totally recommend playing without HUD. It just further emphasizes the still unmatched art direction discussed in this video The music in this video is from the Dishonored soundtrack by the late Daniel Licht You can buy Dishonored on Steam. https://store.steampowered.com/app/205100/Dishonored/

Thief 2X: Modding The Metal Age

*DISCLAIMER* This video really didn't want to be made. Firstly, I wasn't able to record footage of Thief 2X with Shadowplay, probably because of the menus being in 800x600 while the game was still 1080p. None of my other recording solutions worked either. I ended up having to recycle footage from my previous Thief 2 video. Sorry about that. Secondly, the ending audio just didn't seem to want to work properly. You'll notice a small skip right as the credits music stops, and believe me, it was much worse before I spent some time trying to fix it. Sorry about that too. Mods are the purest way fans of a game can express their love for it. They give the developers the opportunity to show off everything that they think makes their favorite games special, while iterating and expanding on the ideas that those games present. When game devs have moved on to new projects, mod teams are the only ones keeping the spirit of classic games alive and fresh. Tyranny: A Glimmer of Hope

*SPOILERS FOR A DISFAVORED-CENTRIC PLAYTHROUGH* Few games focus on stirring negative emotions in the player, but those that do are often the most memorable. Typical western RPG's serve as a bit of an ego-trip when doing pacifistic or diplomatic playthroughs, while Tyranny takes those diplomatic characters and forces them to do terrible things. It makes for an incredible surge of conflicting emotions that actually made me put down this game my first time trying it. Upon revisiting it, I can say whole-heartedly that the violence isn't taken lightly as in so many other combat-centric RPG's. It's always a bit awkward doing video essays about text based games. I try to avoid using subtitles in my videos because I always get distracted reading them, and tune out what the speaker is saying. I also try to use footage that's relevant to every point I'm making, and it's difficult balancing those two things in a game where the context of each scene is explained via the text. The Bear, The Bull, and The Leech: A Look at Mojave Politics

*Minor spoilers* Fallout New Vegas essentially revolves around each groups answer to the question: "what should and shouldn't be carried over from pre war civilization to post war". Each faction showcases a different answer to that question, and this video is essentially a look at the advantages and drawbacks of the governing styles of each of the main powers in the struggle for control of the Mojave. The ulterior motive of this video is to showcase just how incredibly rich and detailed the world of New Vegas is. discussions like this one are just the very tip of the iceberg. The Walking Dead: Friends and Family

SPOILERS FOR SEASON 1 OF THE WALKING DEAD, AND A VERY MINOR PREY SPOILER TellTale's first season of The Walking Dead is one of the most tightly written narratives I've seen in gaming. It utilizes dialogue, course of events, and visual framing to ask thematically important questions about how much family matters once the world has gone to hell. If you'd like to skip to the second part of the video, which discusses how much branching narratives should branch in different games, it begins at 7:24 This video was copyright claimed by the owners of the song "Horse Steppin", and they've chosen to run adverts on it. They have every right to do so, but I'd like to note that I don't run ads on any of my videos by my own choice, and that if you see any, this is why. I've got family at my house riding out Hurricane Florence, and I haven't gotten much time alone to record. Ultimately I had to record in a smaller room than usual, so if the sound quality is a bit worse than normal, my apologies. The music in this video is from the Hotline Miami sound track. Thanks for watching, and for all the support. I'm utterly amazed by how quickly this channels been growing, with fifty subscribers just around the corner. I've had a great time making these videos, and that's in no small part due to this kind of support backing me.

In both Shadow of the Colossus and Ico, the music and camera both conflict with the gameplay in order to conjure up the thoughts of self-righteous immorality that give both games an interesting and unique loop of thoughts, stirring distrust in your companions, and in yourself, while pressing you to go on. A State of Mind's "The Jade Amulet" has a creative integrity and consistency that's practically unpredcidentded in hip-hop, and pretty rare in music as a whole. The Big Lebowski: How it Feels to be a Stoner

Very few stoner comedies seem to actually be about being a stoner on anything more than a surface level, wanting instead to focus on the act of smoking weed. In The Big Lebowski however, we see an excellent portrayal of the mindset and lifestyle that smoking weed every day for a decade can lead you to. Everything about the events of the movie, and The Dude's personality points to this idea. Star Trek - The next Generation: The Perfect RPG

Each episode in TNG reminds me of a quest in a really well written RPG, and the Enterprise crew is going for a pacifist playthrough. It scratches that same itch I get when I'm not in the middle of an RPG, and I've never seen film, especially in sci-fi, that does that. It's one of the few pieces of sci-fi that focuses on the positives of evolution, rather than using it to reflect on the problems of modern humanity. The music in this video is from the Star Trek Next Generation score This video has been copyright claimed by CBS, however they haven't placed ads on it. Far Cry 3: Snake Eater

In my second video, I discuss how I think Far Cry 3's repetitive, and somewhat dry, emotionless gameplay experience could have adopted some of the original Metal Gear Solid trilogy's design philosophy to help it's gameplay match the tone and feel of it's great story. Discussing Prey's Metanarrative (Outdated)

Remake: https://youtu.be/GkVXw4LfkQc Prey (2017) wears the inherent disconnect from reality that all games have on it's sleeve. I know my delivery's a little dry, so that's something I'll have to work on in future videos. Background music is from MF DOOM's 'Metal Fingers Presents: Special Herbs Box Set" I borrowed a couple pieces of footage for parts I had trouble recording from the following Youtubers: 'jsc' https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCV-lG6OUgOSDGellS8Cw5w 'Requiem of Solace' https://www.youtube.com/user/blastergames1
