Part 5 of the best and most dramatic car, truck, semi and tractor-trailer loss-of-control slides, spins, bumps, jackknifes and close calls during intensive news coverage of freezing rain, snow, sleet, frost and other winter weather during the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 winter seasons in the USA. Filmed and copyrighted by cameraman Dan Robinson. From Dan: Thank you all for your continued viewership and support over the years! Stay tuned to this channel for new clips from the upcoming 2024-2025 winter season! Frequently Asked Questions: Did you shoot all of these clips? Yes, I personally shot every video on my channel on-the-scene with my own camera equipment (4K video cameras, drones and dashcams). None of it is from traffic cameras or other sources. Most of my winter storm coverage expeditions are 12 to 36 hour marathons shooting outside in harsh conditions (not including the travel time to and from the storms). Where is Icy Road Madness 4? You might have already seen some of these clips in the 4th part of the Icy Road Madness series. For an unknown reason, Youtube stopped showing Part 4 to viewers shortly after it was uploaded. So, Part 5 contains the clips from Part 4 along with new captures from the 2023-2024 winter season. Were your drone flights legal? Yes, I have an active Remote Pilot Certificate (Part 107) with the FAA and my flights comply with all airspace, lighting and operating regulations. Where can I learn more about icy roads? My winter driving web site Icy Road Safety has everything you need to know about keeping you and your family safe during winter weather. I saw your video somewhere else. Please let me know if you see any of my videos on other web sites, channels or social media accounts. Nearly all of those are stolen copies, and they cause significant harm to this channel by diverting viewers away. Click over to my Storm Highway site and read the DMCA and copyright article to learn more about how big this problem is for me and my fellow photographers!

A rare winter storm brings icy roads to Houston, Texas on Sunday and Monday. As is typical with far-southern US winter weather, accidents occurred mainly *after* the storm as drivers began venturing out with the roads only partially clear. In this 4K video, watch as St. Louis experiences the full impact of what light freezing drizzle can do Friday, December 16, 2016. Barely measurable precipitation created treacherous icing all over the region, causing gridlock. Trips that normally take minutes instead took hours, and many had to spend the night away from home. This video shows the conditions as they arrived in the western metro at Wentzville and spread across the city by nightfall, showing cars and tractor-trailers alike losing control on the deceptively slick glaze. No one was hurt in any of the incidents shown in this video. Shot in 4K UHD. Dashcam video time-lapse showing a typical storm chase in Kansas on May 28, 2013 before, during and after the Bennington, Kansas tornado. The purpose of this video (and others to come) is to refute the claims by some Kansas media and officials that storm chasers are becoming a major problem, clogging roadways and hindering emergency vehicles. Most of this criticism comes from Wichita media outlets and isolated county officials, some who have suggested that legislation be enacted against storm chasers. I invite any Kansas official, reporter, legislator or resident to examine this video and find justification for such threats. A reminder to the critics: storm chasers have multiple video cameras running *each*, and will now be using video to directly refute future media/official claims against those participating in the activity of storm chasing. I will be posting more dashcam video to further refute the overblown claims being made against me and my colleagues. Copyright Dan Robinson http://stormhighway.com

Chicago Lightning Attack: The insane skyscraper lightning strike barrage in Chicago on June 30, 2014 is shown in a single image using an editing technique called "stacking". This technique mimics a single long exposure, but with ambient light sources kept properly exposed. The assembly of these 12 individual still images into a single composite "stack" image is accomplished using Photoshop Smart Objects (Stack Mode/Maximum). Subtle white balance differences in individual images are normalized to match in the final result. NOTE: One of the images used in this composite is of the famous "triple building strike" (hitting the Sears Tower, Trump Tower and John Hancock Center simultaneously), which itself is an actual single exposure, not a composite. This was the second intercept of the day. I caught this second tornado between Highland and Trenton, Illinois with another low-topped storm. This tornado was never fully condensed, but had periodic ground circulations visible as debris/spray on the wet fields. It was essentially the size/intensity of a dust devil at the ground. Since this tornado was very weak, I approached it and let it cross within 10-20 feet of my vehicle. You can see the circulation move through the corn on the right side of the road in my dashcam video. Copyright Dan Robinson.

A short clip of the sound of the rain-wrapped EF3 tornado at Cordova-Beaver Crossing, Nebraska on May 11, 2014. I wasn't shooting at the main tornado, because there was nothing to see but a mass of rain. Instead I focused on the satellite circulations and extreme cloud motions that *were* visible. Per NWS damage survey, the north edge of the tornado is passing approximately 1 mile to the south here. The location is on Highway 420/80E about 1.5 miles south of Interstate 80 at Beaver Crossing.Copyright Dan Robinson. See more at http://stormhighway.com/blog2014/may1314a.php

Read this frequently asked questions (FAQ) on the El Reno encounter: http://stormhighway.com/blog2013/sept2713a.php (Read descripton and transcript below) This is video from my front-facing and later rear-facing dash camera while escaping the core of, and hit by the outer circulation of, the EF5 El Reno, Oklahoma tornado in my Toyota Yaris on Reuter Road between 6:16PM and 6:30PM CDT on May 31, 2013. CDT time shown on-screen is based on GPS time, synced with US official time and accurate to the second. Road intersections are shown as the vehicle encounters them. I am attempting to narrate what is happening for the main video camera. My voice transcription is as follows: 6:17:29 "I want to find an east road here, I'm getting a little to close. I need to start looking for the east (road) option". The tornado was moving east at this point. I didn't want to go farther south and risk not being able to reach the next east road option to the south after Reuter Road. 6:17:45 "Power flashes". The tornado is damaging the power lines up ahead and causing arcing. The streetlight goes out. 6:18:18 "New wall cloud". Another area of circulation was organizing to the north. 6:18:28 "The wedge is rain wrapped". Referring to the main wedge tornado about a mile to the south. 6:18:57 "I don't like getting in front of tornadoes I can't see, especially huge wedges". Referring to why I don't want to go farther south than Reuter Road. 6:19:56 "What is that? I don't like the looks of that." I am surprised to see what looks like the tornado to the south rapidly approaching the road. I had expected it to be well south of me and to the west. 6:20:18 "It looks like the tornado." I now realize what is happening. 6:21:03 "It's just off to the side of the road". Referring to the tornado, which I can see is now right on me. 6:21:53 "Come on, car!" The car is not maintaining speed in the strong headwinds, due to the traction control reducing power to the wheels as they slip on the gravel. 6:22:13 "The car won't go!" 6:23:12 "I've got to get out of whatever this is" I'm still in disbelief the tornado reached Reuter Road that fast. I'm wondering if it may be a second tornado that developed to the north of the wedge. 6:23:24 "The car just isn't going" 6:23:33 "Come on! Traction control OFF!" The entire time, I have been repeatedly hitting the traction control's manual override button to turn it off, but it is not working. 6:24:03 I step out of the car and get my first look back at what I had just escaped. 6:24:22 "I just drove through that" 6:24:44 "There's debris" There are small pieces of debris falling around me. 6:24:50 "Where is it? I can't see it" From the driver's side looking north and northwest, I can't yet make out the north edge of the tornado. I was looking back to see if it was safe to stop again. NKP 765 produces numerous vortex rings (smoke rings/steam rings) from the exhaust stack and cylinder cocks during operations in Pittsburgh on Saturday, August 11, 2012. Some of the rings are long-lived and rise 100-200 feet or more into the air. I grew up watching steam locomotives (during the 1980s-early 1990s excusion era), and never remember seeing one produce vortex (smoke) rings, let alone so many of them. Close-up 1080p high-definition footage of a brown recluse spider (Loxosceles Reclusa) crawling on blue jeans, khaki pants and shoes, and running on a flat surface. Footage shows how the brown recluse can hide in clothing and in shoes, presenting a bite hazard. No audio. Filmed in St. Louis metro. Most brown recluse bites occur from people putting on clothes and shoes that the spider has crawled into. The brown recluse is identified by its brown color, six eyes (three pairs) and the distinctive fiddle/violin marking. The hail comes in waves. Mostly hard golfball-sized hail or smaller, with a few scattered tennis balls and baseballs. Defoliation/leaf shredding on the tree can be seen on the "SW" camera. Some of the CCTV cameras are struck hard, knocking them out of alignment. The hail sets my neighbor's truck's alarm off multiple times. This is footage from three cameras (front/rear dashcams and camcorder) of getting caught in the outer circulation of a large tornado south of Cooperton, Oklahoma on April 13, 2012. This clip is viewable in 1080p HD. Full chase log http://stormhighway.com/april132012.shtml After seeing no signs of organized rotation (either on radar or visually) or surface-based inflow for the previous 25 minutes, I concluded that the window for tornado potential with this storm was over. I chose to end my chase and head northward on Highway 54 in preparation for the next day's target. I pulled into a side road and waited for the radar-indicated hail maximum to cross the highway (to avoid damage to my truck). When I turned back onto the highway to head north, I noticed a tornado in progress just to my northwest. With no traffic approaching either in front or behind, I stopped. I expected the tornado to move eastward and cross the road ahead of me. However, the tornado rapidly grew in size and it quickly became apparent that it was actually moving southeastward directly at me. Having no time to turn around, I began escaping in reverse. As I did, a southbound car passed me and abruptly turned 90 degrees across the highway in my path. I nearly collided with him. I drove in reverse to a nearby east-west road and turned around just as the edge of the tornado caught up to me. I saw 3 other tornadoes with this storm near Blair about 45 minutes previously. The video from the three cameras is synced up in this clip (not perfectly, but close). The front 1080p dash camera runs full-time, and recorded the entire event (main video) (the embedded timecode on the lower right is incorrect, the dashcam is new and I haven't turned that function off yet). The rear-facing dash camera (inset at upper right) also records full-time, but suffers from a 5-second gap in between each 2-minute video file it creates. I also recorded part of the tornado with my HD camcorder (inset at lower right), putting it down once I realized I was in danger and needed to make an escape. Copyright Dan Robinson. I was 11 years old when I made this recording of our annual trip on the New River Train in 1986, led that year by Nickel Plate Road #765. I had two Radio Shack tape recorders and an instamatic camera. This is the raw tape from one recorder in its entirety. The voices you hear throughout most of this are of me, my dad and brother - as you can hear, I was very excited about these trips as a child. I grew up during the golden age of steam excursions, of which we were regulars on during the 1980s. Sequences: 1.) #765 arriving in St. Albans, WV, prior to our boarding 2.) In an open vestibule a few cars back from the engine, somewhere between Hawks Nest and Sewell, WV in the New River Gorge. 3.) 765 stopped, then backing, for the photo runby at Sewell, WV in the New River Gorge. Unfortunately, the photo runby was only captured on the other recorder. The whereabouts of that tape are unknown.

http://stormhighway.com/floodwaves.shtml This video shows why they're called "flash" floods! A strong flash flood wave caused by a stationary thunderstorm in the West Virginia mountains rushes down Mill Creek at Green Sulphur Springs, WV on August 6, 2005, filling the streambed bank-to-bank in a few seconds. I had anticipated a slow rise in the water from the storm upstream, and set up two tripoded cameras in the creek bed to do a time-lapse. However, no time lapse was needed! I had to rush to get my cameras to higher ground. The last two clips show the wave arriving much farther downstream, by which time it had weakened considerably due to the wider streambed (thanks to several mergers with tributaries). http://stormhighway.com/plantstorms.php Power plants and large industrial facilities that emit large volumes of hot exhaust have been observed to act as triggers or 'initiators' of thunderstorms within an atmosphere primed for convective development. This is particularly true of sites with large cooling tower installations that release large amounts of steam and resultant hot air into the atmosphere. The phenomenon is similar in class to the wildfire-induced 'pyrocumulus'. This time-lapse is of a triggering event at the John Amos power plant near Poca, WV on the evening of June 14, 2008, resulting in a continuous, stationary rain shower around the Poca/Cross Lanes area. I've documented this phenomenon previously (in July of 2002) and put together a write-up on it (see link below), but I haven't seen such a well-defined example of this since then - until the June 2008 event. I set up in Nitro next to I-64 and filmed a 35-minute HD timelapse of the cell at sunset. I also did a few panoramas of this impressive scene. At times the shower resembled an LP supercell, with a rounded, smooth striated base and periodic inflow tails. Unlike the July 2002 event, I didn't see lightning or a heavy precip shaft this time. Deep-layer directional shear was present, with southwesterly flow aloft, westerly/northwesterly flow at the mid-levels and south-southwesterly flow at the surface. I first noticed the cell at around 8:00PM, and it was still going when I left it at 10:00PM. Given the low-level visual structure of this cell, it would have been interesting to see what it would have done with a little more ambient instability. During a routine April 2010 oil change, I discovered a massive bird nest inside the engine compartment of my 2009 Ford Ranger in New Baden, Illinois. It took a long time to remove all of the straw and twigs from the nooks and crannies. After a few days, I opened the hood to find that the nest had been rebuilt! I removed it again, then installed a webcam under the hood to catch the culprit in the act: a European Starling. A couple of days later, I went on a long trip out of town for about a week, after which the bird had likely been forced to find another site to nest - he didn't come back. See: http://icyroadsafety.com (Viewable in 1080p HD) This is a demonstration of how slick the light glazing of ice from freezing rain was on untreated roads in the St. Louis metro area on Friday and Saturday, January 20-21, 2012. 15 to 20mph is the top safe speed in these conditions, as even a small fishtail can send a vehicle off the road. Avoiding hills and slowing down to safe speeds is the only way to help prevent getting into an incident during freezing rain. You don't have the skill, nor does any vehicle have the ability, to recover a high-speed slide on this type of ice: Good tires, ABS, AWD, 4WD, traction control nor ESC will bring any safety at highway speeds on freezing rain icing. A slight incline, banking or crowning of a road covered with this type of ice can result in sliding sideways off of the road, even if you are completely stopped. Icing from freezing rain can appear identical to wet roads, making it difficult for drivers to identify, particularly at night. Walking in these conditions is as hazardous as driving in them, and many fall injuries occur from pedestrians on sidewalks and parking lots. Statistically speaking, freezing rain/drizzle is a more dangerous weather condition than tornado outbreaks in terms of human impact. All types of road icing cause more loss of life than all other forms of severe weather *combined*! The safest way to travel during these conditions is to not go out in them at all. Salt crews often can't cover routes fast enough to keep all roads clear during icing events. Learn the warning signs of freezing precipitation and other types of road icing at: http://icyroadsafety.com (All video Copyright Dan Robinson - call 618-920-0811 for footage licensing)
